Or maybe did I dream that such a thing exists lol.

Jesus, if there is such a plugin, that'd be deadly!

Are you serious? You could build a HTPC capable of serving a housing estate for 900 euro!

I have built a good few of them over the years. The software is already there if you stay opensource. Any modern distro will allow you build one. SATA drives and DVD drives cost next to nothing nowadays. Gigabit NIC and reasonable processor (provided you are not transcoding which I assume you're not if you are comparing like for like) is all you need. CAMs? I have had many USB card readers configured to run with the various SoftCAMs around - these are even cheaper than hard drive.

IMO, you could build a really decent HTPC for well under 400, with multi tuners and multi card readers.

There are a couple of things, in these boxes, the cam/card readers are all internal, which will increase the price.
You are putting no cost in for you building the machine, which the manufacturers of these certianly do.
As is have said that the cost of linux is certianly not zero, and is not 'already there' as you say, if it was, why would there be continuous updates to the firmware?

Even if I was exaggerating, and 400 is a valid price, it is still twice the price of the argus edision, which dnme was compairing to the vu+/dm8000.

    Hi mate
I can't remember mentioning one but I would imagine I meant the imdb plugin which is incorporated into vix image.when you are in vix epg scroll to any channel including foreign ones and press red for imdb and it will give you the programs name/description in english.

I installed this last night lads, thanks. I was kinda half right lol. Half the fun is guessing what the movie is. I usually look at the description to see the actors and guess from there.

On searching the web, I am finding many versions of Hauppauge Nova-T.

Can anyone post a link to the proper version?
Is the Hauppauge Nova-T, a HD device?
Anyone aware of any bargains to be had atm?

is great news to see openpli supporting this now as seems a favoured usb tuner amongst many. i also had one in the past before i sold it and got a sundtek. most images on vu+ will be supporting this and may have news from vix in the coming week in this regard.

    Folks, I'm a complete f'wit.
    What is openpli?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭glic83

its an image you can use on your duo (other linux boxes as well)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,451 ✭✭✭dnme

An earlier poster advised me to install VIX. Does that mean I cannot use the Nova-T unless I install openpli?

Which is better, VIX or openpli?

Bear in mind, I don't have the box yet, it's on its way. I have never used Linux in my life. All I know is Windows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭glic83

the receiver uses linux m8 so you dont need to know 2 much just put the image on the usb and flash via the front usb easy as that,id go with vix myself m8

OK but if I go with VIX, then I cannot use the Hauppage Nova-T yes? If this is the case, what USB stick would work?

afaik the vix image will support it shortly

vix 1.3 does not support nova-t, it will be implemented in version 1.4, however openpli 2.0 beta has full support and in my opinion is an excellent image with great support.

Anyone know how to mount an external windows NTFS USB 500G drive on the Vu+ Duo running Vix 1.3?
p.s. - I already have an internal HDD mounted and working fine, but I'd also love to use this external HDD to read and write for timeshifting and recording etc.

    Thanks in advance - jgc115

You need to format it in fat32 or linux ext3, if you can see it in device manager you can format it there in ext3.

Read this somewhere on the net - just wondering if someone has tried it?

    "mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/hdd/
and now read and write perfectly"

Problem with this is I don't know what drive it is as the device manager doesn't see it when I connect it to any of the USB's. Also I'm assuming the ntfs-3g diver is already loaded in VIX?

My box hasn't arrived yet, but if you can get up a command window, and run dmesg shortly after you plug in the drive, it should show what device it is labeled as.

Just wondering why you don't want to/can't use the internal hdd for timeshifting/recording?
The reason I paid ~400 euro for this box, is because I wouldn't have to use an extrernal hdd to record.

Thanks, that worked and it found it. Also like to correct my earlier post, this box does support an NTFS drive as I can now see the external NTFS drive in the devices manager - You wont be disappointed with this box, it is fantastic and the Vix image is brilliant as well.

BTW - I can and I do use the internal HDD for everything (recording etc.) but that's what the vuplus is all about - trying different things and so far sooo.. very good.

    Folks,

Box just arrived. I have located the VIX image here thanks to an earlier post. But there are two downloads...
an NFI file and a Zip file.

Can anyone explain this to me. What are the two files? Which one do I d/l? Is it just a matter of placing on the root of a fat32 USB stick and presenting to the unit?

Many thanks and sorry of this has already been covered but I could not find it.

The ZIP file will just be a compressed 'image' of the NFI file, so you can download either one.

If you download the ZIP version (should be smaller in size) compared to NFI version then extract the file on your PC then copy the resulting NFI file to your USB stick.

    That's just wrong!

You need to download the the zip file, unzip the vuplus folder onto a usb key, insert the usb into the front usb slot and turn on your machine.
