Berty, if you have an outside tap try connecting his hose to it, and turn it on. This should pressurize your house providing its not frozen. Basically all you are doing is bypassing the stopcock outside your house which is more than lightly where it has frozen

Hurray!!! We have finally got the water back - we were without water for a week. I have just had the best ever shower and hair wash, the washing machine is going and the heavy stuff I couldn't hand wash in 5 litres of water is going in the dishwasher after a good hot soak in the sink. I hope the drains can cope with all that grease!!!

Our near neighbours have been great and a fantastic help with buckets and bottles of water, but I will never ever again take water for granted!!

It's brilliant to be able to leave the house again!!!

I didn't think that would work but it did. The attic tank is now filling, the downstairs taps are running. I'm going to let the attic tank fill, wash some dishes and get the heating back on for a while. Then I will switch it back off again as I'm sure I'm taking pressure from his house as well. :D

Thanks Xennon, I would never have thought of that. ;)

Tried that hose idea with my neighbours too - but whatever water was lying in it while it was rolled up was frozen - so it couldn't get through - back to the bucket and pots jobbie!

Thaw out the hose and/or break up the ice in the hose by walking/stamping on it.

Bring it into the house, get a hairdryer and heat up the hose, then try again.

Oh I suggested that, but they needed water in a hurry - so was a bucket job again.

Haven't heard from them this morning so I can only assume that they're up and running again (pardon the pun)

No water in the Ashbourne area of Co Meath since midday today Monday, local authoritities have turned off supplies in different areas due to leaking/burst pipes, could be 2-3 days before we have an adequate supply back.

    Limerick Leader tonight.

Water supplies disrupted as thaw descends

Water supplies across Limerick have been disrupted because of the thaw
HUNDREDS of householders across County Limerick are experiencing water shortages as an "extensive number" of pipes have burst due to the thaw.
Limerick County Council says pipes have burst throughout County Limerick and that the public can expect periodic water shut-offs over the coming days.

Council crews are working around the clock to repair leaks and alternative water supplies have been established for members of the public in the worst affected areas.

In West Limerick, a standpipe has been set up in the Newcastle West Area Office and a water tanker will be located in the GAA carpark in Abbeyfeale each day between 9am and 4.30pm.

In the East of the county, a standpipe has been set up at the Council's Annacotty Area Office.

Meanwhile Limerick City Council says some homeowners in the city can expect reduced pressures due to increased demand and some localised breakages.

The worst affected areas are Clonmacken, Ballinacurra Gardens and Irish Estates.

The local authority says it has no immediate plans to begin rationing water supplies in the city.

Our house, and the houses on both sides, were off from last Wednesday night. Other houses on the road seem to be unaffected. After a quick look at the stop cocks on the road, it seems that the three affected houses have their pipes nearer the surface than the others. The water came back on this evening: it takes time for the ground to warm up again.

So if you're cut off, but others nearby have supply, it may just be a matter of waiting; there may not be anything that engineers or plumbers can do for you.

Until the summer, when the pipes can be buried further underground.

As supplies of bottled water are running out everywhere, I'm seriously considering going down to the river and filling up bottles so that I can fill up the attic tank. The water from there only supplies the toilets and sinks upstairs, so it's not as if we would be drinking it.

Does anyone see any problems with this? Other than me and the OH looking a pair of prats as we merrily fill the bottles :D

Parts of Raheen and Dooradoyle were amongst those affected by the problems at the reservoir. At least that was the reason given anyway.

The councils are setting up water collection areas. I know there is one in Limerick city somewhere in raheen. I'm sure there are various ones in the country as well.. but that said.. desperate times and all that, I dont think it would be an issue to fill it from the river... Just think of it as old school. :D

TBH what made me think of it was that I was watching a programme about the Nile and kids were washing and playing in it and so I thought what if......

Sure, it's old school but, like you say, desperate times make you do desperate things :)

Just noticed on the LimCoCo website that there's a standpipe in Annacotty so if the river thing doesn't work we'll head down there. Thanks Kendragon for the heads up!

Missus has just told me that the water collection place last year was by the library next to the crescent shopping center in the Limerick city... could very well be the same this year.
