Tip the postman? The guy who's never bothered to bring a parcel? We've often caught him slipping the "collect your package at the depo" note and upon confronting him he'll come out with some bollocks like "no room in the van". In Galway that bloody depo is a bitch to get to if you don't have a car.

I don't get this argument of tipping a public service, I mean the guy down clearing the **** in sewers provides a vital service but I doubt many of you will be tracking him down to give him a score.
I'll tip the binmen when they start collecting the black bin more than once a month.

Stupid morons are always coming up with some stupid reason not to collect it, like the lid being open 1-2 inches (because they hadn't collected in in 3 weeks and it was very full), or the bin wasn't close enough to the path edge, or they couldn't read the bin label clearly....etc.

The postman where I live would never do something like that,he will leave stuff with friends and neighbours,I don't know of anyone having to go to the depot to pick up parcels. He would bring it back the next day if he couldn't find someone to take it.He will take your letters to be posted as well.

The binmen will take as much crap as the locals can fit on,round and in the bins. This is why some postmen and binmen get tips and some don't.

HA! I can confirm that this isn't true. My father retired from being a postman 3 years ago. He got up at 4 in the morning and didn't get home until around half 4 in the afternoon, he worked all the overtime he could to make ends meet.

And I can confirm that he does tip our postman because he knows what its like and knows he will appreciate the gesture. Its nice to be nice!

    Merry Christmas everybody!!!:)

What were his standard working hours?
This thread suggest that it's a 7 hour day.

I tip the postman, the girls who collect my children from school and drive them to the creche on the days I'm working, the lady who brings my children to school in the mornings when I work, and the care assistant where I work as she looks after us so well during the year (she is brilliant in a crisis too ).

Working days for postmen vary depending on a number of factors; route, duty number, location and pressure. Standard day is typically 8.5 hours.

I started reading this expecting to get lots of exciting and useful ideas to help me prepare for Christmas; i.e. How to make the perfect roast using only an elastic band and a stick of gum/ How to wrap presents like a ninja and so on.

    :(

I used to always tip the binmen, but in the last year Iv noticed it happening quiet alot, that instead of the bin lorry pulling over to take the bins and allowing cars to pass, they stop in the middle of the road to take them, which prevents cars passing and blocks up the estate, They fcuk off it they tink Il tipping them this year

Binmen have it easy now, no leaking galvanised bins to carry, no plastic bags with sharp things in them that require stitches and and tetanus shots

now wheel the bin to the lorry , if you feel like it , and there isn't a car blocking the way (don't bother to tell the residents association the reg) and it isn't snowy - not really manual labour and compared to the old days it's cushy

In the space of about half an hour, someone had pinched about 4 or 5 envelopes of cash from wheely bins! Bastids!
    * takes notes *

We always leave €20 in an envelope for the bin men. ............................................................. In the space of about half an hour, someone had pinched about 4 or 5 envelopes of cash from wheely bins! Bastids!

Now that is a Christmas tip.

And they'll get very upset if they don't get their tip...

It was a sad day when you guys stopped tipping Moderators

Other than that, I give the binmen a case of beer.

I drop the postie a score, he's a sound bloke. Even my dogs like him.

Tips, last night I rang for a Chinese and was told the delivery guys were charging an extra €1 per delivery because of the snow!.

"Seriously?" says I - "Tell 'em to stick it".. I mean, cheeky fvckers. I'd normally tip those lads a few quid anyway.. So thats their tip knocked on the head for awhile.

hm...where I'm from, you give the postie/bin men presents like chocolate or a bottle of booze. Would that be acceptable here, or will I be sneered at?

(hubby refuses to tip them at all, but I think it's a nice gesture - however, I really don't want to give money....)

    Any advice?
