Mr Murdoch (owner of The Times, The Herald Sun and HM Government) has an interest in developing control over the internet.

Some backround from a Guardian article here for anyone who's interested.

How does wearing a bra have anything to do with having sex earlier?

Because the child is being encouraged to think that they are a teenager, which is the age people usually have sex. It's the same with 10 year olds wearing make up-they think they are teenagers. Then they start experimenting because they read about it in those teenager magazines. Christ, every story is about sex in them.

I'm far from being a prude let me tell you, but if you saturate a child with sexual images, guess what is more than likely going to happen? It's going to be very interesting to see what the next generation of children turn out like. I would say emotional basket cases.
And don't get me started on those sickening beauty pagents for children....

Not looking for a fight but an apology would be nice!

In fairness, there are popular magazines for those in their early teens that encourage a very reasonable and cautious attitude to first romances.

Yeah, those beauty pageants are horrible. Saturating kids' minds with pretty much anything is a bad idea, but I do think kids need to be frankly taught about sex and presented with facts. Putting sex out of sight as something dirty and wrong is just as bad as saturating their minds with sexual images.

I would have thought that was somewhat funny to be honest, and I've already explained that there weren't any other sources I could find to support it, which was very odd given the major nature of a story like this. If that's lost on you then no offence was intended. It will be interesting to see what if any other coverage there is of this in the press over the coming week.

I'll leave it at that then.
    Nuff said.

    More back on topic:
I GUESS that who ever is paying the actual bills will be asked for confirmation (via account number and other info) as to how they want to opt in/out.
They won't get every porn site. Its obvious some will slip through - however its a possible indication of things that might come in the Irish direction in times future.

Good idea in principle I think. Though there'd be a lot of grey areas. I mean would wikipedia be banned for its page on vulvas?

I mean I think they would have to change it as I would probably get an infraction for linking it directly here or my account closed if I linked to it on facebook.

It might become the case that most people would opt in for access because it would invariably make accessing a lot of ''not porn but may cause similar offence'' type sites impossible.

There are millions and millions of porn sites on the internet and it is literally impossible to block all of them.

How do they propose to prevent porn from torrents and file sharing sites? What about forums?

Completely misinformed and totally unworkable. Won't happen. :D

Seriously, the more I think about this the more impossible it seems, because it is.

There was a previous attempt to introduce a .xxx domain for all porn sex related sites.
However the Americans objected (for monetary reasons, surprise! - it would have been then thereafter according to them, easier to cut off their porn revenue streams).

Now however there is hope that xxx domain will actually be introduced at some stage and used.
Further info on this can be found on the net but here are a few links to start ye off:

I notice you're speaking about this as if it is actually sure to happen. If it pleases you to speculate, fine, but it all seems quite premature.

Have you bothered to read some of the links above?
As IF its going to happen...? The English government is doing their damnedest to see it happens.
I'm not speculating on if it will happen - I'm later guessing (and I stated this clearly) about how they might THEN do it.

    You should learn to differentiate.

Yes, I have. Several of the links were to similar versions of the same dubiously-headlined article. One of them, presumably included to back up the claim that Vaizey is meeting broadband companies with the intent of censoring the internet, spoke of a meeting scheduled to discuss something completely different.

Could you please show me what good evidence we have to be certain that the UK government is 'doing [its] damnedest' to ensure that all online pornography is blocked?

I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm just wary of stirring up e-outrage without good, solid evidence.

Have look back at some of the later links.
They even just mentioned it on Sky news. Guess they are playing catch-up.

...And I DID state that the meeting was about another net topic too you will note.

Will these measures apply to printed copies of The Daily Sport/News of the Screws/etc or does it only apply specifically to hardcore porn ?
So they want to stop the early sexualisation of children do they? Well maybe they should start with:

    -pole dancing kits for children,
    -bra's for pre-teen girls,
-clothes for kids that say things like 'sexy bitch',
-Rihanna/Pussycat Dolls/Christina Aguilera/any rapper making videos that resemble soft porn,.

Or maybe they could tell the whining Daily Mail reading parents of middle England to start taking responsibility for bringing up their own little brats rather than passing it off to others.

Given that Vaizey wants ISPs to come up with solutions and is hoping the government won't have to legislate, I don't think this issue is as far ahead or as concrete as you're making it out to be.

All things are possible, Britain will have to wait and see.
Their government is certainly making steps in that direction for sure...

Yes it is impossible to completely block it out. However we don't abandon the legal system because it fails to stop all crime.

It is too easy for kids to find porn at the moment. Sure the smart ones will work out how to find it but in the absence of easy access they may just not bother. not only is it too easy to find porn - it is also likely you will come across it without looking for it. Google image search any word you like followed by the word 'teen' and you will get nekkid/porn pics

this is more important than any other issue i can think of regulation of the internet in any form anywhere in the world needs to be prevented

Heh, well if you turn safe search off...

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    My thoughts:

    1. I think this would be extremely difficult to enforce - there's just too much data out there to block every single porn site - anyone can set up a server if they want to.
    2. The whole point of the web is the sharing of information, communication and collaboration. To try and censor it wrong and should not be tolerated.
    3. People should take responsibility for themselves. I'm sick of authorities/do-gooders/government trying to save us from themselves instead of allowing people to make their own decisions - e.g. having to have child seats in cars. Children/teenagers should be superivsed when on the internet if their parents feel the need to protect them.
    4. If this did happen, I'd opt in on point of principle

So will I have to fill in a form to watch redtube now? If parents took more responsibility for what their children do on the net then there would be no need for this.

no you wont need to fill in a form, but you will need a VAT number!
