You could say the same about anyone who ever did drugs. It wasent like he was doing heroine or anything, he was just doing a drug that according to the poll in AH, 33% of people here have tried.

People here are saying he's a hypocrite for condemming drugs on air, but come on, he was no Joe Duffy. Its all well and good for people to come on here and admit to doing drugs when your hiding behind the anonymoty of the internet, but how many would admit it to their bosses, colleauges and family? We dont even know the extent of his coke usage, its all speculation for now

IMO Gerry Ryan was a decent fella with a weakness that unfortunetly led to his premature death

Im willing to bet any amount of money that anyone who grows at home has at some point bought drugs illegally, most likely before they started growing

I grow at home. I've never bought drugs illegally.

Amazing how many blind people on here who still think gerry the druggie was a decent fella. good bye cokehead imo. And he didnt admit to anyone he did coke either, his south african diplomat bird didnt even know about it, and the way he was given free reign to pontificate on the radio every bloody day was sickening, loads of people felt that way even before it was confirmed he was a cokehead

and we do know the extent of his coke taking, it ws confirmed in the autopsy that he was obviously a serious user.

I've said this before but here goes: as a society, we really must look at why a 53yo man who spent up to 2k a week on drugs felt the need to lambast other drug takers for their habits.

Given the deafening silence emanating from the chattering classes on the issue, it seems clear that nobody wants to draw the fire of their peers.

Seeing as I'm not part of the chattering classes, here's what I think:

    1. A lot of people take drugs
    2. A larger number of people tolerate people taking drugs - as long as they're not the Wrong Type of People, and the same drug-taking peeps manage to remain as productive members of society
    3. A minority of people (largely older and with larger disposable incomes) think drug-taking is disgusting, would never tolerate it and may even consider boycotting/turning off those who appear in statement 1
    4. The groups in statements 1 & 2 collude in upholding the clause of the contemporary Irish Social Contract that All Drugs Are Disgusting, and Only the Wrong Type of People take Drugs.

Personally, I don't see the appeal of cocaine. I resent its presence in my society because I feel it creates barriers between users and non-users.
But we really do need to look at our assumptions about drugs, and be open about who uses it and why it is popular.

    That's my rant over.

So you just decided to start growing it randomly one day? 1000 euro? Seems fair, but im going to need your real name and address to send the check on. Also, I'l need 1000 euro from you to keep quiet

That was my point. Most drug users are unlikely to admit to it to their families/colleauges

He hosted a current affairs radio show. Of course he was going to give his opinion on current issues. It was his job

Did he use it everyday? Was he snorting all through his show? Or was he just a social user taking it at parties? We dont know this. All we know is that he took too much prior to his death. Im not saying that was his first time using it, but the same could happen someone using it for the first time

You're so naive you probably still believe in santa.

Yeah sure it was his job to be a condesending prick on the radio day for hours, every day for years. and then the scumbag was givena tv show.

Wake up will ya and stop being a gerry cokehead ryan cheerleader. Your idol was a cokehead, how does that make you look.

Never said I was a fan of his, just dont understand the extent of negativity surrounding the coke revelations. How am I being naive? All I said was that we dont know the extent of his drug taking. Gerry Ryan wasent my idol, but plenty of people idolise drug takers, Phil Lynott being a prime example. Did Gerry Ryan do something to you? Maybe he wouldnt read out your texts or take your calls on air because you sound wayyyy to angry about all this

    No problem:

    AnonoBoy
    27 Unreliable Road
    Dublin 2

    As for your 1,000 euro?

That wasn't part of the deal bud.

But I will await your cheque with bated breath although I suspect you might go back on our deal.

    Typical.

That's just bloody typical that is.

Not a bit angry and dont presume to know what i think!!

    Am sorry you dont understand!!

An delighted that the obese slob has finally been shown to be a drug taking hypocrite. Amazing how so many other idiots on here hopelessly try and defend the pontificating cokehead

RIP Gerry. RTE legend, still up there with the all time greats Ryan Tuberty, Gabriel Byrne and Mike Murphy in my book. We should have an Irish Mount Rushmore and carve their mighty visages into Croke Patrick.

Don't waste the mountain, I think a concrete straining post should suffice when carving Tubridy.

Is there any where on the Internet where people can name and shame 'famous people' who take drugs? Just wondering. I mean you hear everyone who's anyone in Ireland takes cocaine, yet there's never a name mentioned. Why not?

why not, still way to many people praising gerry ryan on here. i didnt see you object to the cheerleaders on here who kept going on about him being a "legend"

next time an rte show starts going on about how "society" is funding human trafficing, terrorism etc by taking drugs they should remember that one of their ex employees had a nasty secret himself

I have no problem with you giving your opinion but there is no need to repeat the same thing over and over.

I wasnt repeating the same thing over and over. why do you take issue with what i was saying. does it not suit you to hear it.

There's a lot of repetition over in the weather forum. have you taken issue with anyone there

I started listening to Gerry Ryans` night show on 2fm in the 80`s and continued listening when he moved to the breakfast show up until the mid nineties.
Up until this point Gerry was a fantastic broadcaster, but he slowly changed to a point where he became insufferable.
He became pompous, arrogant, egotistical, smug and self satisfied.
It came to a point where, if I caught a glimpse of his sneering smug face on tv or heard his droning voice on radio, I would feel the resentment rise inside me and would have to switch the tv or radio over immediately.
The man became a total buffoon, so far up his own arse, so full of his own importance, that he became an embarrassment to RTE, his wife, his children, and to himself.
The night he hosted the Late Late show, he was so off his head on coke he couldn`t shut his mouth to let his guests speak..... Tommy Tiernan had to tell him to shut up so he could get a few words in!
But of course all his journalist friends went on a PR drive in the papers to convince the gullible viewers that he had done a great job and to ignore their initial thoughts after watching it.........It was car crash TV and everyone at montrose knew it and deep down even his most loyal fans knew it too.

BUT after saying all this, I was surprised how his death affected me.
I feel very sad for Gerry Ryan.... he was suffering from a powerful disease that stole his personality and ultimately his life.
I grieved for him like I would a long lost friend.
I feel especially sorry for his children and his wife.
    I miss him.

    R.I.P. Mr. G Ryan.
