Again for the second Mux what do we expect that SD channels and Radio will move to Mux 2 while on Mux 1 we will get 4 HD channels. (Long term future).

Analogue is OK. It's the digital.

so is this a permanent thing or will it be intermittent testing of rte2hd? whats the guesses at this stage? its pretty impressive the wildlife programme on now.
Ps I was in tesco tonight and they had all their mpeg4 tv's showing tv3 from the DTT tranmission.(all the others were showing sky news or turned off).

All RTÉ channels will have access to MHEG-5 Digital Aertel with the correct receiver. Text refers to traditional EBU teletext which will only be carried on RTÉ 1, TV3 and TG4.

No official plans have been announced for the second mux.

There are no issues now.
All the encoding is done at Donnybrook - everyone receives the exact same broadcast.

All these TLA's can't keep up, I thought EBU stood for European Broadcasting Union and was in realtion to EuroNews :rolleyes:

So can we speculate as to what we will see on the second MUX?

Text in that extract above refers refers to traditional EBU teletext which will only be carried on RTÉ 1, TV3 and TG4 at a bit rate of 300 kbps per channel.

Digital teletext appears under the heading "Interactive" - "Digital Teletext" at a bit rate of 1.000 Mbps and will be accessible from all RTÉ channels incl RTÉjr/RTÉ Plus.

300kbps sounds VERY luxurious for Teletext. I had an idea that it was pretty slow

In the case of the Ceefax and ORACLE systems and their successors in the UK, the teletext signal is transmitted as part of the ordinary analogue TV signal but concealed from view in the Vertical Blanking Interval (VBI) television lines which do not carry picture information. The teletext signal is digitally coded as 45-byte packets, so resulting data rate is 7,175 bits per second per used lines (41 7-bit 'bytes' per line, on each of 25 frames per second).

45 x 8 x 8 x 50 = 144,000 bps

So 288kbps is as if 16 lines per field are used.

Hmm.. more than I imagined

Given cost of 28.2E sat I see now why BBC is dropped it. Same space as a decent quality Radio Channel, or two dopey quality Radio channels.

On digital there are NO blank lines, hence 480i = 525 lines, 576i = 625 lines and 1080i = 1125 lines (if there was such a mysterious beast as Analogue, well there are or where HD CRTs, and they need time to get spot back up to top. VBI = Vertical Blanking interval.), so teletext being totally digital, as happily has its own stream in the MPEG-TS as lives in "blank" analogue TV lines in the VBI.

Shorthand for EBU Teletext. I.e. the BT/BBC invented 1970s digital Teletext that is on Analogue TV sets

You need MHEG5 to get the new text service, listed as "Digital Teletext" at the bottom 1.000

Likely HD depends on Money, costs, Mux Space.

I agree, it ought to be HD.

In theory BAI has to approved it. They will spend X months humming and hahing so that it looks like they are important and in control and then they will approve it.

The proposed channel would be made up of mainly Irish and European Film rather than American Blockbusters, it may include some other world cinema. It was also supposed to run without advertising but that is mainly down to the IFB/BSÉs chairperson and former chairperson and co-founder of TV3 James Morris.

In relation to RTÉ Two HD as it is currently broadcasting, how does it looking on HD TVs? I am assuming that it isn't really broadcasting in HD.

I would have thought that the BAI have no control in relation to the IFB/OTV channels since they are in the Act. The money is what is required.

Watched Kingdom of Heaven on RTÉ TWO upscaled to 1080i last w/e & Con Air on BBC HD 1080i. (TX-L42D25L HD LCD Panny) The difference was obvious, clarity & depth were clearly better on BBC HD. It has been posted here that RTÉ as yet can't play/transmit recorded HD programming but possibly have a live HD play thru' capability (I think that's the phrase), waiting to see if they will transmit (play thru') the football content of the Champions League game on Wednesday in HD.
On the other hand, if RTÉ don't have the capability to transmit recorded HD programming, how were they able to transmit the HD video loop on the RTÉNL channel for the tests? Maybe someone can explain.

Don't know if they have the HD rights to this season's Champions League. Of course, the programming guys in Donnybrook may go and pleasantly surprise us - here's hoping anyway

A professional grade PC with an HD-SDI output interface patched straight into the encoder would provide a basic test loop like that on the test channel. The scheduling system and more specifically the VTR's they use to play out recorded programming isn't HD capable, although they are in the process of moving to a tapeless environment which will be HD capable.

A long time since "James Morris" was editing Guinness ads on a pair of U-matics in Georgian Terrance near St. Stephan's Green. Then Some fun installing an old cinema projector with telecine adaptor in the paint-still-wet Windmill Lane.

In those days people lucky to get 1.5 channels here.

AMD64 Athlon off the shelf I was playing pre-built TS file with 5 channels into PCI DVB-t modulator over two years ago.

If you have an ASI out PCI card you can play a single HD loop (pre-encoded) into your Mux and use any old PC.
