I find it hard to respect a group of people who coutinuously show me discoutesy in every day dealings.

I have had many dealings with the gardai: administrative, traffic, getting in (small) trouble etc.. 95% of time i was unhappy with the service

A few rotten apples you say!?? 1 or 2 fresh ones would be putting it nicely..

You have to be a special type of person to be accepted by the gardai, it begins with 'c', ends with 't' and has a 'u' and an 'n' in the middle

    (and its not a coconut)

So they didn't respect your right to commit crimes and break traffic laws?

I have the utmost respect for the guards. Well the majority of them anyway, there are plenty of power hungry f***s that like to act as if they rule the country, particularly the traffic corps but you get that in every job.

In my opinion its not really the guards themselves that are the problem. It's the laws and policies that they are made to inforce! It's like in any job, you have a quote or a target to achieve and you have to do it, weather you agree with it or not.

People who s***e on about police brutality in this country need to have a look at what happens over in the likes of vietnam, burmagh, ect.... What happens here doesn't have a patch on they way the authorities over there treat people!!!

It always amuses me when people complain about the Garda and how they have been treated by them.
I've managed to go through my life without ever having to deal with a Garda.
I know how to obey the law.
If I don't, I expect to be treated accordingly.

They get to deal with all the sh!te so the rest of us can go about our business in relative safety.
They put themselves in harms way for very little money.
Our Garda are the most laid back police you are lightly to encounter in any country.

Actually one of the sound/professional/respectable gards I have dealt with is one who made me throw away a drink in public.

Also the gardai do regularly stop motorists without them having broken any traffic laws, so you dont have to do anything wrong to have them display their lack of social skills!

I live mostly in England and the gardai are a disgrace in comparison to the Police Force here. But Ireland deserves a force such as they have, the whole 22 counties are a disgrace so in fact they compliment the country.

Ireland in general has become a disgraceful country in the past 10-15 years so instead of focusing on section of the populace take a look at the picture in general

Yes, I do respect them generally. However, I have had genuine reason to question that decision in individual instances. There are problems in the Gardaí

TBF the majority of Gardai in this country are a joke we all know the kind of the person who join's the service, people in your school or area's who never really socialised, had friends etc..
then they are put out on the street to deal with the ordinary citizen who they never were able to get on with in the first place and you get the end result rude, unhelpful and in extreme cases violent.

ha ha ya cant honestly believe that all Gardai are some kind of loners before they join up and then join, make friends and then hunt in packs to 'get back' at the 'normal' people who wouldnt be their friend??

    I wouldn't envy their job but I wouldn't respect them. I don't have respect for a faceless mass/people I don't know.

Im sure this will ruffle a few feathers but what the hell. I've seen a good few posts on boards about the guards and problems people have with them. I have had nothing but unpleasant experiences with them. Anytime I am stopped in my car they are rude and seem to have some sort of attitude problem. Don't get me wrong I have met a few guards that are sound but in my opinion alot of them just seem to get off on abusing their powers and acting like a twat. The recent student protest is an example of this. My question is who respects the guards these days?

i respect the gardai. no matter where you go in the world you will see that the police forces arent liked. its down to the simple fact that people want the law enforced but not on themselves.

if someone crashes into to you, you expect the gardai to prosecute them if there in the wrong but when your caught speeding, you think the gaurds wrong to stop you because your only speeding.

i always wonder about people posting these anti police comments, they seem to have a beef with the police because of there numerous times dealing with them, i have never been stopped by the police or had anything but good dealings with them. do you know why? because i dont break the law, its that simple. stop doing illegal things and they wont stop you.

    No They are bullies.

When ordinary people report crime they ask you did you do what it is you are reporting.

I don't trust Garda and I just stay clear of them they are noting but trouble.

Respect some not all, had good and bad experiences with them. I respect the majority however it is the bad ones that annoy me.
Waiting for people to tell me there is no bad Gardai - of course there is like all people in all walks of life.

Some of them are sound and decent and if your out and about pi$$ed will have a chat with you and send you on your way.

Others are just @rseholes and want to know everything about you even if you have done nothing at all.

The bad ones are just power trip freaks who had a sh1t childhood where they had little or no mates and where social outcasts, now they have a bit of power and abuse it.

The bad ones could do with being more friendlier and just have more respect for people and stop thinking they are bigger and better than Joe Soap.

Kind of strange this idea of respect.....applied to ANY profession really.

Is it elitism? The Gardai are not the most intelligent or gifted amongst us.

Should we have a thread asking McDonalds employees - Do you respect them?

really? arent all our laws verbatim of English laws? does england not have the highest rate of police compensation payouts of all the eurozone countries, am i not correct in saying that english police need only there gsce's(equivalent to junior cert) to apply to the police force... yeah seems like a great police force.

as for our "disgrace" of a country??? what does this mean?? 22 counties??, dont you mean 26? geography not yor strong point ehh?? ireland is a beautiful country and more influential than people know. we are globally recognised and welcomed the world over. the same can not be said for england or the english people.

i would just like to add im not anti british, english or anything like that. these points were made only in response to the above. irish and proud

Funnily enough as the daughter of a cop and wife of another cop I do respect the Gardai :D

For a good chunk of the last 35 years the blue uniform has put food on my table and clothes on my back so to be fair i'd be expected to say i have respect for them

Yes there are some muppets in the force, the idiots in Donegal did the force in general no favours whatsoever

The vast majority of the circa 14,000 Gardai in Ireland are decent blokes who have a crappy enough job

I was talking to a girl this morning who's husband works in Newcastlewest and you can bet her husband wishes he had been off duty yesterday :(

Generally speaking, in my experience the people who complain loudest about the job done by AGS are those who have fallen foul of the law at some stage
