1. Only 10% is recoverable on average so this 420 billion is only actually 42 billion. It'll cost Shell many billions to build all the infrastructure. In fact it has taken them 10 years. In what other country in the world does this happen!?

2. Even with all of these advantages over other countries, low tax etc why is it that there is hardly any oil companies off our coast drilling? It's because compared to most oil producing countries we have feck all resources and its so arduous to actually do anything.

3. There is pretty much NO infrastructure in Ireland for oil and gas so giving it so some people on the cheap so they build oil pipes and terminals in a good Idea because it increases peoples interest in the area if the infrastructure is already setup.

4. Whoever comes in first deserves good returns. When there is actually some kind of infrastructure set up for oil and gas then maybe we start getting better deals.

Were in a country blessed with substantial wind and hydro resources, see how much electricity we export? There's no guarantee the FFuchkers will negotiate better deals on our behalf.

It doesnt cost billions to build the infrastructure, just a few million. Although theyll price it as high as they like to write off the tiny 25% (international average 68%) tax rate we imposed on our own gas. And ten years? Theyll happily wait another ten. There is a good supply of gas from the North Sea right now, so it makes no sense to start selling it right now. Its only going to get more expensive. Arab oil countires have capped their gas reserves for the future.

The revised cost estimate emerged yesterday as new documents just filed with the Companies Office by Shell Irish subsidiary, Shell E&P Ireland (SEPIL), show that the capital outlay on the project to the end of December reached €1.918bn. - From the Independent

Like I said, they'll price it as they like. Its not as if there is an independant regulator.
We have no national oil company? Neither did Norway. You create one, 80% owned by state and 20% owned by whatever oil company, for example. And the iol company gladly agree. Unless they think the country in question is run by corrupt gombeen men.
