I have to agree with the lads. Sky wont pay BBC Worldwide because they have no reason to. They still have lots of Sky customers here even without the extra channels and extortionate monthly fees.

I Just rang Sky and they told me that it's not up to them to add BBC1 HD, I told them that's a load of bull. She said that I should email there customer service dept and I have and so should everyone on this forum.

Emailing their cancellations department is the only way they will take note.

your dealing with sky that why, so if you want BBC 1 HD you pay for it or drop your sky sub and get sky freesat card and say good bye to your sky + or get the bbc /itv freesat humax pvr

The only reason I have Sky is for Sky1 HD otherwise I'd have left them long ago.

It's on my Freesat, just popped up today. Would be cool for sky to place it in the EPG but we are talking about $ky here so...

Hope this weekends F1 is in HD! HA!

It'll only be upscaled, not native HD. It will be next season though.

I keep on saying it until im blue in the face, Dump sky, get a decent HD combo box, UHF aerial and you'll have all the FTA stuff plus Irish DTT, keep your Sky box looped through the combo or fed to another feed from your dish, get a UK FTV card and you'll have the extra few channels either on the combo box or on the sky box (Five HD, CH4 HD, Sky 3, Viva, Five usa, Five R)

The combo box possibly wont keep the FTV card alive, but the connected sky box will, so when not in use pop the sky FTV card back into the sky box.

With this setup, you can record via the combo box to a Hardrive, you can also then watch a 2nd channel either by the combo box (Depending which one you have) or via the sky box.

If it seems complicated, its not, and once you have the system setup, its Free.

Ive combo boxes in all the main rooms and now have my epg as follows:

RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TG4, RTE news, BBCone HD, BBC HD, BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV HD, ITV, CH4HD, CH4,CH4+1, Five HD, Five etc etc.

Can you easily record RTE and TV3 and watch another channel using this system?

That's all well and good, but as I've already said above I need Sky for Sky1 HD, and your set up leaves a lot to be desired. Most People want things simple and easy to use.

Can you easily record RTE and TV3 and watch another channel using this system?

I use Play TV with my PS3 to record Irish TV (cost me €50), it records shows to the hard drive of my PS3.

I got an aerial installed in my attic and had cables routed to downstairs and upstairs with one cable going into my LG MPEG4 TV and one into my Play TV. So I could in theory be watching RTE1 as TV3 records on my PS3 all while draws breath BBC1HD and More4 record on my Humax foxsat HDR.

Another added advantage of having a PS3 or I suppose an internet TV although I may be wrong on the internet TV, is that I can watch the RTE Player website as well as You tube among other sites and watch programs that mightn't be on FTA channels yet.

I presume that Saorview PVR boxes will soon be available as british freeview PVR boxes are currently available and I'm sure you could if you wanted, split the signal between your MPEG4 tv and PVR and so watch one channel while the PVR records one if not two other channels.

The great thing also about Play TV is it decodes the digital signal so if your TV is currently not Irish DTT ready MPEG4 you can watch all the current Irish DTT channels through it.

It is simple and easy to use! Oh well, you'll have to keep paying SKY Ireland for their service then unless you can get cable?

I wouldnt mind but our beloved government transmit all our channels to the North and yet we get nothing in return except BBC 1 NI, BBC2 NI and BBC HD

Time to swap my Irish subs to a UK Subs.

They don't transmit all "your" channels to the North. RTE 1, 2 and TG4 are part of the basic Sky NI subscription package. TV3 isn't.
The BBC Channels are not encrypted, anyone can watch them, RTE is encrypted.
As has been mentioned elsewhere Sky pay BBC Worldwide to include the BBC channels in the Irish EPG, the BBC don't pay Sky.

You have a point.. an FTA system that replicates the Sky+ setup is still to complicated for the novice/average user so most will just stick with Sky and pay the (ever increasing) prices for less "hassle"

What's needed here is a box that will do HD, Freesat, terrestrial, and recording/dual channel functions in one with a easy-to-use EPG... and all at a decent (sub €200 I'd say) price point.
Bear in mind that very few Sky subscribers pay full price for their equipment upfront - most of the time it's a "free"/"reduced" upgrade that's then charged for over the year as part of the sub.

If you then add some enterprising installers who'll "do a deal" on such a box, dish and an aerial and you have a winner!

Until then Sky will continue to abuse their position as they have no reason not to!

Oh and as for Sky 1 HD.. While it's your money, I don't see anything that would be worth paying the extra €15 a month for, but thats me :)

These are some of the responses SKY have given in relation to this:

Sky Hi xxx, Appreciate the frustration but it's outside Sky's control, sorry. BBC1HD isn't available in Ireland is due to license and broadcasting restrictions. We are constantly working with the relevant parties to try and make this available, and hopefully we can bring this to all our customers at some point.

Sky It is a BBC decision. You will have to ask them, sorry.

Now if the World Cup was coming up and was only (or shared) on this channel, I think they might change thier minds. Why do you think we got BBCHD last year.... SKY trying to sell more HD boxes to Irish customers (so they could claim to have ALL WC matches in HD) who don't get the full range of channels and services for more cash than our UK counterparts... manual tuning just doesnt cut it for me with no SKY+ capabilities.

... and don't get me started about SKY Anytime+:mad::mad:

You should reply. Dear Sky, as the BBC 1 HD channel isn't available in Ireland due to license and broadcasting restrictions, please cancel my account so I can watch BBC 1 HD on the default EPG for free.

I have never heard such bull**** in a long time. Irish viewers are unfortunate that BBC 1 HD didn't launch before the World Cup.

yes its more of the sky cr*p that they peddle while fleecing off the irish customers. licence issues translates into we(sky) dont want to pay bbchd(or channel4 hd) for the privilige despite taking 15euro a month for hd...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,150 ✭✭✭JDxtra

And it'll probably be €15.45/month from January as the UK VAT rate goes from 17.5% to 21%.

bottom line is that sky wont pay bbc for us to get BBC one HD. we may get it for the 2012 football if we are lucky. mind you the standard of the HD channel isnt great

Such a kick in the teeth.

Was able to record Strictly on BBCHD, now that it has moved to BBC oneHD, it's back to old SD, unless watching it live on other channels.

I thought we were supposed to get more HD, not less!!

BBC One HD can be manually added in Ireland using the following details:

    Frequency: 10.847 GHz

    Polarity: Vertical

    Symbol Rate: 22000 (22.0)

    FEC: 5/6

Will hopefully work until they add it to the EPG. If they ever do!

If you tune in BBC One HD there is a trick which allows for to record "other channels" on the Sky+ HD box which would allow you to series link it.

    Link

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

That trick will allow you to record the current programme from BBC One HD but series linking will not work.

    Link

Interesting but Presumably you need to do this every time or does that channel remain recordable?

    Hey Snaps,

can I ask which combo box you use to record RTE and TV3 etc.?

I currently have 2 Foxsat HDRs, but I want to be able to record RTE without going down the Play TV route.

    Thanks,

    Branners

No it has to be done for every recording which makes it infeasible really, if the series link had worked as I was thinking then for regular programmes it would be an alternative.

You do know we have a thing called a sticky at the top of the page that tells you how to do that? Why not post your advice on the sticky thread?
