Spain is actually way down on the list. This is only for 15-19 year olds from 2002 but it's probably the same for under 15s.

    http://globalis.gvu.unu.edu/indicator.cfm?IndicatorID=127

That's a bit of an assumption.
I don't have a problem if people wanna discuss culture, but jumping to conclusions about the girl's ethnicity isn't adding anything to the discussion. She's a young girl from Romania, oh she must be a Roma. That's a bit ridiculous to be honest. According to this, Romania has a lower incidence of teenage pregnancy than the U.S. If it was a cultural thing, I'm sure the number would be much higher.

The Roma are one of the major minorities in Romania. Completely different cultures.

She could possibly bear one child a year till she's 45. That's nearly 40 children. if any of those children have kids when they're ten then the total population of that one family could be over 500 within 40 years. Staggering figures......

And if she had octuplets each year with each of them having octuplets . . .

I'm having trouble finding statistics for under 15s.

That's fair enough but making assumptions about a person's ethnicity based on the age she had a child is a bit ridiculous. According to the wiki article linked earlier she has more chance of being from the U.S or South America.

Edit: Also, the article states that the girl mentions giving birth at such a young age is common in Romania which is obviously untrue. It says noting about the Roma in particular so it's pointless discussing it really.

I don't want to get dragged into this but you keep repeating the above as if there was truth to it so I just wanted to point out that it is not THAT ridiculous in fairness.

Romanians v Roma - I know who my money would be on in this case. So we can agree to disagree on which is more likely.

That's fine, but you can't assume that the statistics for 15 - 19 year olds will be the same as the statistics for under 15 year olds.

The article stated the child was Romanian. To be honest it is a logical conclusion to draw that the child in question could be of Roma descent. Nobody stated it as fact, someone earlier in the thread merely wondered if this could be the case. People are entitled to speculate, it isn't harming anyone.

One fact we do know, however, is that the child in question was not from the US or South America, so saying she has more chance of being from there is moot.

Phew! Thank God it didn't happen in Ireland. It proves we are still a Good Catholic country.

Phew! Thank God she is romanian, It proves Spain is still a good(ish, who is the daddy? ) Catholic country, too.

So, it is a little bit of an aberration, but the world is still essentially nice & flat...

How can you say you're not racist and then lump all people belonging to a particular minority together without distinguishing between any of them? Prejudging an entire group of people does pretty closely match most definitions of racism.

I don't prejudge, and I referred to the Roma in this country. I work for the Department of Justice, lawbreaking amongst the Roma community in Ireland is remarkably high. Unlike the Romanians in general in this country. So wasn't prejudging, was going by experience.

I don't know why you are all getting your knickers in a twist over Roma versus Romanian or any nationality giving birth at such a young age. It happened here in Ireland on a regular basis not so long ago and it probably still happens from time to time. Some of the 'unmarried mothers' I knew back in the 70s who went/were sent secretly into what were commonly known as unmarried homes when their pregnancies were too far along to hide spoke of girls as young as 10/11/12 who were also in those homes for the same reason.

In the mid 80s a friend of mine was training as a psychiatrist in London and she told me of a case she had dealings with (no patient confidentiality was breached) a trio of girls - a grandmother, her daughter and her daughter's child, aged 35, 24 and 12 respectively, who all had the same father. A sweet Irish man. The 24 year old had finally made a break for help because their father was aiming to give them another sister who would also be his great granddaughter.

As for a girl that age being physically able to give birth vaginally to a baby of average weight - Mother Nature is wonderful. From the beginning of pregnancy the body prepares itself for delivering the baby. A hormone called relaxin is released into your body to help loosen and stretch your ligaments. This works on all the ligaments and if you have a number of babies bits of your body can stay stretched. After a number of babies the feet especially can stretch permanently. I went from a size 3 in shoes to a size 4.

Read the thread title, thought to myself, "bet it was a Roma despite this happening in Spain", find out the girl is from Romania, reads that the mother said its common in her culture, know that it is not common in Romanian culture, meaning that in all likelyhood the girl in question is a Romanian Roma(as opposed to Czech Roma or Hungarian or Polish Roma etc).

Much as I think a significant minority of Travellers are muck savages, I do not pre-judge them and take them on an individual basis because I have met a heck of a lot of decent travellers down through the years. However, I have never met a Roma that didn't try to beg or steal from me, never read a story about a squalid squat or tent encampment that wasn't about Roma, never read about an atm scam that didn't involve Roma, never read about arranged marriages between 12 year olds that wasn't about Roma, never read about pickpocket gangs that weren't about Roma, never read about distraction burglaries of vulnerable people that wasn't about Roma etc etc

I don't look down on them as people. I don't think they are sub-human, however I do think I can look down on their culture and yet not be a racist. Hey I even recognise that for whatever historical reasons they are stuck in a catch 22. No one trusts them so they can't find work so they beg and steal to survive and thus no one trusts them so they can't find work......Its a terrible tradgedy that the cycle still hasn't been broken.

Until it is though, I won't ever trust a single one as far as I could throw them.

10 is a bit young to be having sex or kids! Thats mad. I'd like my younglings to be able to hold a job before they go around procreating. And then it'll be a shotgun wedding

Highly debatable:D Records are there to be broken, well as long as it isn't broken around by my family. Then it becomes a travesty and one young man won't be attending the christening. I know I am awful:rolleyes:

I'm not insinuating you don't have experience, but when you refer to 'the Roma' rather than 'some Roma', it is racist.
