How long to get rid of the cravings for sugar??

    Hi,

    I have a pretty healthy diet except for my habit or craving of sweet things? Have done it before but always end up going back on it due to being hungover/going to the cinema/ being with others/ having a coffee out and wanting something sweet with it.

    I think half of this is down to habit. Can I have advise off someone who has been successful giving up sugary things? How long until you dont want it anymore?

    Im quite good to start the day sugar free muesli, banana and brown bread/pitta for lunch then as I head for dinner, I want something afterwards. The banana probably isnt good for cravings.

    Any tips or advise would be great. :)

    It's all about keeping your blood sugar levels at a steady level. The GI scale is a good indication of what foods bring your blood sugar levels up and down. The Bannana is notorious for having a high GI level. What works for me is to eat some protein and/or fat whenever I'm eating carbs. So butter on brown bread, some nuts with a bannana. plenty of meat in a sandwich etc.

    That would make sense for the banana, as I eat them a lot, Im not really into meat and its easy to bring with me for lunch.

    You are right though as they never really fill me up. Things like hummus, tuna would be better I guess. Also do you mean to have nuts with a banana to help with the gi level? Does it help if you mix foods with high GI and Low GI or does it matter?

    go low carb for a couple of weeks or a month and it should bring your system back into line. I remember having a bar of chocolate a month in , and I couldnt taste anything. The odd square of dark chocolate now passes as a treat.

    I'm the opposite, every time I go low carb I crave sugar even more! the dark choclate definately works once you can keep it under control. A few strawberries/blueberries etc are not going to do you any harm either! (in moderation)
