Had a Castle Rock Harvest Pale. It's a creamy light pale ale. Thought it be hoppier but very easy to drink.
It's currently the Official Best Beer In Britain. I've yet to see any reviews in which it lives up to that.

There was a little sign saying this and I was thinking to myself wow I must have a really different view to how these judges view beer.

IMO Galway Hooker is about 10 times the beer that this is and must say the cask ESB was much better than I expected and again nicer than this 2010 best beer.

By the way there is nothing wrong with the Harvest ale it's just not as special as I might have hoped. The one memorable thing is that it was 1 of the creamiest Amber coloured beers I have tasted.

That seems to be the way of the award. Though Hobson's Mild, which won a few years back is really good.

I can't hear that word now without thinking of this. "Who drinks a pint of cream?" :D

For lunch today had 1/2 Tim Taylor Landlord on tap. So much better than the bottle and actually has a taste compared to the 2010 best beer!
Anyway found it much spicier than the bottled version and malty.
Great hoppy smell of it too but not overpowering.
    Fine drink I can say.

Cask Timothy Taylor's Landlord is a wonderful beer.

Last night had a very Scottish nice stout journey.

All shared between 3 people, we had:

    Bellhaven Scottish Stout
    Old Engine oil
    Ola Dubh 12 reserve
    Ola Dubh 16 reserve

A very nice progression of flavour:D

Would love to try it, I really like the bottled stuff. Is it widely available in pubs over there?

It's fairly common up Yorkshire way, and gets rarer as you go south, and then a few places in London have it. It took me about three goes over several years before I found out what the fuss was about. It really has to be well kept to work properly.

Most pubs have it as a guest ale for this month so they are on cask taps.
The pubs are Nicholson's pub I think.

Haven't seen it in any of the Fullers pubs.

have torpedo and SN stout, plus something else. Love torpedo haven't managed to find it in ages. I should have gotten more while I was there, I just didn't have space in my bag and was a little hungover today.... :(

picked up a couple of Williams IPA in redmonds with there 4 for 10 offer

first time trying an indian, really enjoyed them, it says on the bottle they're for "hop heads" but I didn't find it very hoppy.

Tried a harviestoun bitter and twisted, it tasted a bit too sweet straight out of the fridge but it seemed to calm down a bit, lovley beer

What is considered hoppy here and UK would be tamer than US hoppy. E.g. Porterhouse's hophead is fairly tame.

I didn't drink the Williams ipa and bitter & twisted side by side but I remember thinking they were quite similar but preferred the Williams ipa. I thought it was like a blonde ale with oomph.

Williams IPA has to be one of the best I've ever tasted, top quality.

Just enjoyed a Blue Moon, now enjoying the freshness of a bottle of Magic Hat #9. Lovely very pale ale. Must try and find it back home.

Having Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier and a Grolsch Premium Weizen tonight.

The Weihenstephaner was very nice. The Grolsch is good but I'm a bit disappointed that I got 2 Grolsch and only 1 of the other rather than the other way around.

Oh, memories. I think #9 was one of the first beers that woke me up to the fact that beer could... well, taste of something, when I came across it in Maine a few years back. I think it's my epiphany beer. Kicked off a good summer of taste exploration! :pac:

Did you pick the #9 up in Ireland? I'd be interested to see what I think of it now.

Mmmm... Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout is another delicious one I had the other night, same ballpark as the Guinness Foreign Export, rich coffee & chocolate flavours, a hint of bitterness, but soft & creamy so you don't notice the whopping 10% ABV. :)

Where would one pick up a bottle?

Second question: can anyone recommend a good stout to go with a coddle?

That would depend on where one lives, though DrinkStore delivers nationwide.

Dungarvan Black Rock is a very good 'un.
