    Hey guys,

I know Magic Mushrooms are banned in Ireland, but I heard that the spores are legal to buy (as long as not used to grow). Can anyone tell me if this is true? Thanks for any help.

It's true. But the second they begin to grow they are illegal.

Maybe I should phone the Gardai to inform them of all the illegal mushrooms that were gathering together and loitering in the Wicklow mountains on Saturday.

Where could one obtain these "legal" spores? Just online?

Online, or in cow sh1t. The latter is cheaper obviously but the former means you don't have to pick up cow sh1t.........

Legal for 'research purposes', the same loophole that permitted many headshop drugs at one time.
Cultivation is illegal without a license. I know that some places like TCD and the Botanic Gardens have on certain occasions obtained such licenses to cultivate other things, like poppies, but I'm not aware of anyone ever receiving a license for psychoactive mushrooms, and I certainly doubt one would be given to an individual rather than an institution.

ha ha I hear you need to be up at the crack of dawn, working a full time job I can't seem to find any time for picking :)

Psilocybin (the active ingredient in mushrooms) and its esters are illegal in Ireland. As the spores do not contain the drug they are legal to possess.

They're legal to own but illegal to grow.

With regards picking: You do NOT need to be there at the crack of dawn, I've never managed to get there before 11am and I've never left disappointed. Of course that depends on where you go, but I won't be sharing my picking location:p.

lol @ the illegality of something which grows in abundance in my garden. Should I call the cops to arrest mother nature?

It actually makes sense there's no THC in the seeds, which are a good source of vitamins and are used in some ethnic food.

Also there's no point in criminalising them they'd be impossible to detect and simple to import.

Magic mushrooms are not physically harmful but toxic fungi abound, some of which can kill you. Luckily, the type of shrooms that are predominant in Ireland, liberty caps, are fairly distinctive, but you’d still want to be damn sure you’ve got the right ones.

Arguably the ban on the sale of certified psilocybin mushrooms was a dangerous move when it's meant that a lot of people are out picking wild without a real clue about what they're looking for and what they shouldn't even dream of taking.
All it takes is getting the ID wrong or taking a sprouting amanita and you're going to be pretty damn sorry. Ther's a thread on here asking abotu how people would like to die...I know alkaloid poisoning is waaay down my list of ways I'd like to bow out...

Yep and they see far more cases of alcohol abuse. Deal with that first, then come back to us.

AFAIK it's legal to grow them, as they grow wild, but illegal to dry them out and sell them etc.

    Spores are legal,

Harney made it illegal to cultivate them back in 2004(?). It had been illegal to dry them out or process them for years.

Funnily enough, nature doesn't recognise man's laws, and the fields of Ireland will continue to provide us with potent hallucinogens for many years to come. :D

Anyone else have John Travolta's voice in their head saying:

'It's legal to buy it, it's legal to own it, and if you're the proprietor of a Magic Mushroom, it's legal to sell it...'

    in their head?

    ...anyone?

If you have to ask on AH where to find them you probably shouldn't be taking them.

No. It might be wiser if you collect them and post them up to me. I'll dispose of them properly.

Poppies aint illlegal. No license needed.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I mean papaver somniferum, which is definitely illegal to cultivate (despite the seeds being readily available in garden centres.)
You DO need a licence to grow them (same legislation as covers cannabis incidentally) but thanks to Gardai not raiding granny's flower bed, I'm not aware of anyone ever being convicted of it.
But yes, growing opium poppies is definitely illegal (Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.)

You learn something new everyday. Completely legal to grow them in the UK though.

Yup. But not to extract the opium from them, obviously. You need a licence for that.
