Poor to rich?

MY family were poor through the boom, due to no fault of our own really, (My Dad wouldn't pay maintenence),

Now I have a good job and have money...

It feels weird actually having money, like I used to wonder all my childhood what it would be like to be rich, and now I am, but I kinda feel Like 'a rich person imposter!'

I also work with disadvantaged people and sometimes can't believe that it's ME on the other side of the desk in my good clothes being asked for help, one man said to me one day "the system is against the poor", looking at me like how could I possibly understand, and I felt like shouting "I'm one of you really!"

Anyway I'm rambling on here, just wondering has anyone else made the transition? It's quite strange!

Really don't want to irk anyone that's lost money during the recession, but I want to share that I've realised that money isn't the be all and end all.

With genuine respect, a lot won't be saying that after the next few budgets.
It will be life or death in some cases I suspect!

I know, that's also why I don't enjoy it, I see so many people around me who need help. How can anyone enjoy money when others need it? Hopefully this thread won't jinx my job

You are still poor. It's like the Indian Caste system, you were born poor and you will die poor. Your destiny has been predetermined...

Well done, you've obviously worked really hard to get where you are now. Don't feel like an impostor, I think that people who work for their money often have more appreciation of it than people who were just born into it, you deserve what you have earned.

I don't have much to respond to your actual question though, because I've only just finished being a student and am doing temporary work to build up experience

I was always poor growing up. Finished school and got a job. had money...... didn't have a problem spending it.

But, after a few years i decided to go to college. So for 5 years i've been a student and have had NO money to spend. Nothing! Rarely got to go out for pints etc.

Now i have graduated and have a job with a little money..... and i feel really REALLY weird spending it!

Like, if i had €20 to do me for a week, i was rich as a student. Now i have many €20s.... and it feels perverse to spend an entire €20 in one go haha

I don't get people who say money isn't everything. Granted, you don't need to be a millionaire to enjoy life but you will certainly have a better quality of living the more money you have.

Tell someone whos got kids, about to lose their house and has no job that money isn't everything.

Because when it comes down to it, it is.

I grew up in a house with no central heating system & the only toilet was outside in the back yard. There was no bathroom inside the house, so we had to use a plastic bath in the kitchen & fill it with hot water to wash.

Sounds like a Monthy Python sketch, but it's actually true & wasn't the 1950's, but the late 1970's.

In my first job after I finished college, I was earning more than my dad.

I now have a nice house, a nice car, money in the bank & lots of stuff that I probably don't need.

It's true that money isn't everything, but I'd rather have it than not.

Yeah it's a total mindshift, it's very strange! I'm very grateful of course, but I think people born into riches can't really understand what it is like to be rich as they're so used to it.
I do think you appreciate money more having been born poor, but also you feel an underlining sense of guilt, knowing what people who don't have much money live like! I just want to do more...

Did you ever feel like an imposter? Cause that's what I kind of feel like. obviously since things are so unstable i should be thanking my lucky stars!

No. What I have, I earned through educating myself & working hard.

And I saw your post before you edited it... I would consider myself "still young" too, thank you very much!!

Tell those with loads of cash who have lost a loved one due to cancer or whatnot that money is everything, when it comes down to it

The folks you speak of will never starve in Ireland, they will have a roof over their heads and in a few years may well be back on their feet, no one comes back from the grave, money or no money.

LOL - sorry, but that's what it reminded me of immediately.

I grew up in a middle-class household - my dad was an engineer with the council. We had enough money but had it drilled into us that we should never tell anyone - and almost be ashamed of it. I suppose it's because of both of them coming from households where they didn't have much.
I was a kid in the 80s. We used to go away nearly every summer - only to England, but it was still considered fairly la-dee-da. And we had a car (a banger) and a phone - quite a few of my classmates had neither. Without meaning to sound about 90 years old, it were a very different world to today...

Oh yeah to answer the OP's question: I grew up in a middle-income household, now I've a fairly poorly paid job but I'm getting by fine - therefore I have neither experienced richness, nor poorness.

Damn fucking boring middle-class.
