    There's only 4 episodes.

So 25% of this series has consisted of mainly crying.
Hhhmm... hopefully they're treating it as an extended 'pilot' to expand on afterwards then, e.g. if they get a good enough response - it would be very expensive to make 12+ episodes of it it bombed immediately. Plus if it is a big success, RTE would be fools to not expand on it. If they leave it at just four, then that could be an issue.

Gillan also played a ganglord in 'Runners' which won the IFTA for best short this year, fwiw.

a lot of the acting and dialogue was weak. also the crap hip hop soundtrack, cos as we all know crap hip hop and drug dealing go hand in hand.

Ah yes, ruth negga. now there's someone destined for the big time.
Again, the hip-hop thing i wondered about, but again, reckon its not too far from reality.

ps, i want a % of the profits of this show, :D

The initial fast pace thing is risky, but i thought it worked myself.
wonder if being on a RTE quality starvation diet has left me too hungry and therefore too positive? either way, will def watch it next wk.
Yeah, inciting right away was a good idea, especially if it is just four episodes. I was mainly responding to some people complaining about the lack of action thereafter.

David Caffrey directed it, by the way; he also did Raw & Grand Theft Parsons. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1625724/

Hutch is hardly your stereotypical gangland criminal.. And he has no involvement in drugs from what I remember..

I'd prefer Ruth Bradley to Ruth Negga, she looks good as a blonde in this production.

''Imagine putting the wrong date on a search warrant!''

    How convenient.

happened in real life to an irish judge not too long ago!

    Judge Brian Curtain..

    Trial and acquittal
In May 2002, the Garda Síochána launched Operation Amethyst, a major investigation based on details received from Interpol in August 2001 of Irish credit card transactions made in 1999 to a child-pornography website in Texas.[5] The operation led to numerous arrests and convictions. Detectives executed a search warrant on Curtin's private residence, seized his computer and reported finding 273 child pornographic images on the hard disk. Curtin was charged in January 2003. Following delays due to the judge's ill-health, the trial took place in April 2004. At the trial, Curtin claimed that the search was illegal because it had taken place outside the limit of the 7-day warrant. The Gardaí claimed that the delay was due to Curtin's extended absence from his home and that when it took place at 2:20pm on 27 May 2002, it was still within the 7-day limit.[6][7] The trial judge ruled that the search was illegal. As a result the computer evidence found could not be used. Without that evidence Curtin was found not guilty, the judge declaring that the case was "crystal clear".[8]

He's currently no doubt enjoying his retirement with a big state pension .

I know they have to tone it down (probably for the export market) but none of these guys were convincing as gangland criminals; heck, they weren't even massively convincing as typical Irish people ...

I would be far more scared of Billy Meehan or Zumo Bishop from Fair City:p

But that's the thing about Gillen's character, we don't know if he is meant to be a stereotypical ganglord or a 'smarter than your average' type - an Avon Barksdale or a Stringer Bell. Judging by his subtle demeanour in this episode, I would be guessing closer to the latter.

Slap a suit on John Gilligan and he wouldn't look out of place in the Dail. Sure he's a larger build, but he doesn't look particularly 'rough' either.

Billy was great and very convincing, as I said before the accents are weak.

I'm not sure about this to be honest.

By RTE standards it's great, but that doesn't mean a lot. There was far too many slow motion drive by montages sound tracked by ancient hip hop tracks for my liking.

Some of the accents annoyed me too. Not that some of them were well spoken, but Robert Sheehan kept slipping in and out of his real accent, and the one that plays Nigel's girlfriend clearly doesn't speak like that either in real life. Why do they have her putting on a fake accent? Does it really matter where Nigel's girlfriend is from?
As for looking like a criminal or not, I was blessed with the misfortune to grow up in an area that was.... let's just say "not so nice" and there are all sorts involved in this kind of thing, so the fact that Aiden Gillen doesn't look that hard, or Robert Sheehan is a bit too good looking to be a crim, don't bother me at all.

I'll probably tune in next week to see what's what, but I'd expect a pick up in the pace of it.

fairplay thought this was great , about something good came good out about the irish gang shoite thats going on , the only thing that annoyed me was that the acting was a bit shaky and sometimes the dublin accents were a bit silly at some stages :P

    5 stars ,spot on!!!

Has potential I suppose but not that convincing. Any one know where I can watch "Runners" Been looking around but could'nt find.

Gave this a chance last night as i'm not a big fan of TV but heard this might be good. My big question is could'nt RTE find some actors who might at least look like scummy drug dealer sorts and not part of a boy band. Besides that aspect it's not bad i suppose.

I actually quite liked it... I think people on here are just looking to slate another RTE production.

Aidan Gillen looks about 15 years older than he was in The Wire.

The lad they killed off straight away was a big shock. I assumed he was going to have a big part to play. He was a likeable character straight away.

    Looking forward to next week.

Wait until the scenes in the Aquatic Centre and then you can decide who is the better looking of the girls

Hands up all those who are only watching this for Aidan Gillen.

Hands up all those who are only watching this for Robert Sheehan :D

Cant believe the makers of this didn't notice yer man in the coffin swallowing... in two different scenes. Or maybe hes not dead at all.

This is like fair city with guns......I did however watch it in full.

I have a tin ear for Irish accents, so they may sound unconvincing to you, but I couldn't care less.

All in all it showed promise, but damn it they need to speed up the pacing. It's inviting comarisons to The Wire by castin Aiden Gillen in a drug-dealers show, but the Wire gave a lot more life to a lot more characters in its first hour. must try harder.

Honestly, I'm willing to give almost anything RTE does a free pass so long as it's better than Pure Mule: The Last Weekend. That show left me completely astounded at how boring they'd made it.

One thing that really pissed me off: The bit where she went "What does gangland mean anyway?"
It was in every single ad,was a ridiculously on-the-nose mission startement, and I was curious how it would fit into context in a conversation. Turns out IT DIDN'T. She was talking a journalist and as she walked away she turned around and said "What does gangland mean anyway?" out of absolutely flipping nowhere.

I'd love to a script editor for RTE, I could spend the whole day weilding a red pen and a horse-whip.

One last thing: Tons of American music in that show. Have they never heard of any Irish rappers? even MJEX?

I thought it was great, and considering I dropped a load of US shows that I've been watching for years from my viewing schedule today, I'm not exactly easily pleased...

Havent seen it but the actors on the billboards look way too much like students to pass as genuine scumbags.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 71 ✭✭robototitico

The casting is poor. It would have been much better if they had used actors that actually have working class Dublin accents.

  • Registered Users Posts: 460 ✭✭KeanSeenan

I onlu checked this out 'cause of Gillen, but at times I still hear Carcetti in his accent, it's strange.Sheehan has been fairly unconvincing so far, but I'm still gonna see how the rest of this pans out.
The end reminded me of Wee bey taking D'angelo to his house to get him to feed his fish, but without as good actors. And also, is bebo even still around anymore?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,383 ✭✭✭91011

Its amazing how many people made up their minds on this less than 30 minutes into the programme. - the usual guff "its irish, so I have to hate it"

Considering the budgets for dramas like this are miniscule coampred to the budgets of UK / USA drama, I think it punches way above its weight.

Excellent cinematography, good storyline and naturally the first episode of a 4 part drama will introduce a lot of characters and set the scene for the following episodes.

I say well done to what seems to be close to a 100% irish production that will probably see international sales.

LOL, was wondering at that myself - it really dates it.

I thought it was great, had to keep reminding myself it was an RTE production!

No-one's expecting "The Irish Wire" out of this (except the advertisers as far as I can tell) but the comparison is easy to make. Both try analyse and dramatise the low-levels of hoods and criminal gangs, both have Aiden Gillen in an important role.

I don't see anyone so far posting "OMG SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER TAHN THE WIRE!!" and I don't expect to see any after the rest of it's aired.

But it's sill enjoyable on its own merits, as melodramas go.
