Sometimes they get hold of the house owners details - voting register etc and directly target a named person.
If this happens you should pay up to get them off your back ,but make up a ficticious name. When the 12 months run out go back to ignore mode and let them chase Mr. Michael Mouse for it :D
    Works everytime... allegedly ;)

The 'reminders' come in my landlord's name anyway :D

I gave them a fake name and told them I'd get straight onto it.
Now any time i get a letter for Fakey McFakerton I just throw it in the bin.

    :D

    Keep on dreaming..... :p

'Celebrity' (use that term loosely) Bainisteoir is back on this weekend, my defence in court for not paying is looking stronger by the minute!

I ended up in court last year
I'm struggling to live with the shame

I did answer the door, gave my name and ignored every letter.
An Post sent a registered letter which I signed for, BAM; court summons.

Strolled into the PO and bought a TV licence 20 minutes before court.

Got a 150 euro fine, I hold my hands up. Can't complain

I don't know if we pay it at home home but we don't pay it when we're in college anyway. we're only there 8 or 9 months out of 12 anyway...

But your majesty, my cousin was just raped by 67 deranged penguins and my boss keeps harrassing me with a hole punch and elastic bands. My cat has syphilus and I can't stop spinning around like a helicopted.

You may have to spin around like a helicopter while in court.

I'm doing the stamps right now 4euro a week isn't too bad to part with. If the inspector comes round they give you two weeks to pay the rest to get the licence.

Now that The Den is gone there's nothing to watch:(

    Direct debit...€13/mth ...much easier!

We don't such a "joke" tax in Australia.

I think the Aussie government realised 40 or more years ago that they had better uses for resources than to have employees driving around trying to find people who had not paid such a silly tax.

Same here, and once i have the full amount in the book, i will wait until they come knocking before i actually buy the licence, cos once you buy it, you will have to renew it every year, and they may never call!
So i'll wait till they do, safe in the knowledge that the money is there for it, but not wasting it til i need it! :D Cos there is no date on the stamps or the book, sweet. :P

If you don't pay, tell the inspector that you haven't got a tv but don't let them in to look, and recieve a court summons, could you then move your tv to a friends house, go to court for the day, and claim expenses for the work missed?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭gurramok

I don't(so far this year). Did foolishly last year in the previous place based on LL's advice. Did not renew it and moved. Got letter addressed to 'The Occupant' recently, they can't summons an unknown name.
And yes, the blinds are always closed especially when i'm not there. When i'm there I follow Uriel's excellent advice.

The reason why a large percentage of people don't pay or feel that they shouldn't have to pay for a TV license is because this percentage is generally know. "If the guy down the road didn't have to pay it, then I'm not going to either". It's completely understandable.

Also people don't think they are getting value for money, so the only motivation to pay for it is to avoid being penalized through a court appearance, fine, etc. People also know that the means used to track offenders isn't rock solid, and it's not.

(It's not value for money) + (many get away without paying) = why this thread/problem exists. It's a problem for them and it's a problem for us.

I have never once been asked how they could improve their service and impact my perception of value for money, not once. Instead they would rather focus their energy on the other side, using scare tactics to win conformance. It's backward.

I have suffered financially in the current climate, and I do have to watch what little money I have. I pay my license because I came 1 step away from a court summons (for the 2nd time). Then again if I read in the paper that person X was hauled to court for not paying their TV license I wouldn't think any less of them at all, but they're just going to have to pay it and a fine in the end anyway regardless of how much shouting they do on their own.

My licence arrived the other day. The only saving I made was not getting it until the 1st of the month rather than paying a full month for a few days. Shame we can't pay based on how much RTE we watch.

If it was based on RTÉ reception you might have a point. You'd swear all of it went to RTÉ when reading some of what's posted on this thread.

    I don't pay it no.

To the people saying they got busted, how exactly.

The inspector comes to the door, you or someone else answers it. He says I believe you have a TV in there. You say well I don't. He says can I come in and check. You say no and then laugh into his face. Profit.

I bought a football the other day.
    I suppose I have to buy a licence before I have a kick-about.

Get ta fuck with yer TV licence tax.

No, put a bed sheet over the telly and tell them it is a microwave. You can add some sound effects as well to really throw them off. *ding*

I live in the middle of nowhere. So can't see them being arsed calling out this way.
If they do however i'm caught, as i've no blinds in the house, and you can see into every room in the house through the windows when the curtains are open.

Can the inspector send a warning because he saw your tv from outside in the street? I live in an apartment, no way in hell I'm getting one.

The radio ad should have that excuse in it instead of the retarded ones they actually use

This is the issue i have with the tv licence, practically all the money goes to a channel that i rarely watch, and would happily live without, plus i have to pay a sub to Sky to even receive the channel on a digital platform!

I pay it, got away with it for about 2 years but gave in when they started sending letters in my name instead of just "The Occupant". Couldn't really risk getting a summons coz I work in a solicitors.
