You mean you answer the door to people

I don't answer the door at all to anyone.

My friends will always ring or text or whatever before they come over to make sure I am in, so if I am expecting them I'll answer the door.

My family either have a key, know to ring before coming over or if they see the car in the drive and I don't answer the door will give my phone a ring and If I am in I'll open the door etc...

Not doing that, you get ****ing TV licence inspectors, charity gimps, roma gypsies, Airtricity or some other gobsheen looking to "save me" moeny or Jehovah witnesses... None of whom I wanna waste my time talking to even just for 10 seconds

If I do get caught out, I'll shut the door immediately. It interrupts the "tractor beam" intro spiel they all have.

    Interesting, interesting.

I find your ideas intriguing, perhaps we could get together and discuss them further?

I'll call over to you this weekend if you like.

Oh I seem to have misplaced your address, what is it again?

Aaaand +1... We got stung there a few months back when my flatmate answered the door to the TV license inspector. So we made him pay the full thing by himself as he was the one stupid enough to answer :pac:

No, I don't (and hopefully never will) pay it. In the next few months, I'll be returning our loaned tv and that'll be the end of the fear of who's at the door.

I'm going to buy a kick ass monitor for the sitting room. We have *loads* of tv and movies on the computer and harddrives there already, can stream matches (even RTE do this with the GAA) and can check out other stuff on 4od, RTE Player etc. No need for a tv really.

Sometimes they get hold of the house owners details - voting register etc and directly target a named person.
If this happens you should pay up to get them off your back ,but make up a ficticious name. When the 12 months run out go back to ignore mode and let them chase Mr. Michael Mouse for it :D
    Works everytime... allegedly ;)

Lived in 4 different rented houses in the last 4 year and never had a tv licence inspector call! Do check every time before I answer the door though in case the guy outside looks like one!

When I lived in an apartment I didn't bother paying it. Inspector called to the door one Saturday morning when I was in bed so told him I didn't have a TV so he asked if he could come in to have a look so I told him to **** off out of there. He wah wah waaaahed about court and **** so I told him to come back with a Garda and a warrant. They sent some threatening letters but I ignored that and moved out a few months later.

I get one now because my other half thinks we'll get jailed if we don't. Which is probably true

Mad as it seems i think that having a monitor and access to the internet requires a tv license as you are able to receive outside broadcasts.

Trust me, I've looked into it. As long as the monitor has no way of picking up broadcast tv, you're fine (same for the computer, no tv card).

Got caught two weeks ago. He called to the door on a Saturday at 4pm. The kids answered the bloody door. He'd been parked outside the house for five minutes looking in before hand apparently. He gave me three weeks to pay and when he saw my face said I suppose you're going to tell me that like the last woman I called to that it's way down your list of priorities. I replied that it wasn't even on my list of priorities. They can fuck off. If I was to pay a licence to anyone it would be Sky or Nickleodeon. He'll be back around this Saturday. I might ask him for a loan.

    Ladies and Gents,
if you DO feel the need to open the front door, then get yourself one of these babies and decide on a ring by ring basis.

'Celebrity' (use that term loosely) Bainisteoir is back on this weekend, my defence in court for not paying is looking stronger by the minute!

I ended up in court last year
I'm struggling to live with the shame

I did answer the door, gave my name and ignored every letter.
An Post sent a registered letter which I signed for, BAM; court summons.

Strolled into the PO and bought a TV licence 20 minutes before court.

Got a 150 euro fine, I hold my hands up. Can't complain

You may have to spin around like a helicopter while in court.

I'm doing the stamps right now 4euro a week isn't too bad to part with. If the inspector comes round they give you two weeks to pay the rest to get the licence.

Now that The Den is gone there's nothing to watch:(

We don't such a "joke" tax in Australia.

I think the Aussie government realised 40 or more years ago that they had better uses for resources than to have employees driving around trying to find people who had not paid such a silly tax.

Same here, and once i have the full amount in the book, i will wait until they come knocking before i actually buy the licence, cos once you buy it, you will have to renew it every year, and they may never call!
So i'll wait till they do, safe in the knowledge that the money is there for it, but not wasting it til i need it! :D Cos there is no date on the stamps or the book, sweet. :P

If you don't pay, tell the inspector that you haven't got a tv but don't let them in to look, and recieve a court summons, could you then move your tv to a friends house, go to court for the day, and claim expenses for the work missed?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭gurramok

I don't(so far this year). Did foolishly last year in the previous place based on LL's advice. Did not renew it and moved. Got letter addressed to 'The Occupant' recently, they can't summons an unknown name.
And yes, the blinds are always closed especially when i'm not there. When i'm there I follow Uriel's excellent advice.

The reason why a large percentage of people don't pay or feel that they shouldn't have to pay for a TV license is because this percentage is generally know. "If the guy down the road didn't have to pay it, then I'm not going to either". It's completely understandable.

Also people don't think they are getting value for money, so the only motivation to pay for it is to avoid being penalized through a court appearance, fine, etc. People also know that the means used to track offenders isn't rock solid, and it's not.

(It's not value for money) + (many get away without paying) = why this thread/problem exists. It's a problem for them and it's a problem for us.

I have never once been asked how they could improve their service and impact my perception of value for money, not once. Instead they would rather focus their energy on the other side, using scare tactics to win conformance. It's backward.

I have suffered financially in the current climate, and I do have to watch what little money I have. I pay my license because I came 1 step away from a court summons (for the 2nd time). Then again if I read in the paper that person X was hauled to court for not paying their TV license I wouldn't think any less of them at all, but they're just going to have to pay it and a fine in the end anyway regardless of how much shouting they do on their own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,109 ✭✭✭Sarn

My licence arrived the other day. The only saving I made was not getting it until the 1st of the month rather than paying a full month for a few days. Shame we can't pay based on how much RTE we watch.
