Only in Ireland would you have people defending the leader of the country appearing on a national radio programme drunk and/or hungover.

I don't care that other people have shown up for work drunk or hungover.

Perhaps it says something about our expectations of our politicians.

Sharon Ní Bheoláin sounds a bit hoarse, she must be drunk/hung-over

He had a sore throat, and a sinus infection, and must be coming down with something. No wait, it's all Simon Coveney's fault that Cowen was sinking pints half the night !

Can you please tell us how you know he was hungover?

I'm not saying he was or wasn't... but the interview in no way is evidence that he was, nevermind leading to the kind of publicity that the interview has received.

Sesna, I have to disagree with you there. There are plenty of anti-FF people who think he didn't sound drunk or hungover, just his usual oafish self.

I'm more worried that Brian Cowen will get a sympathy vote from the people who blame the nasty media for putting him down, because in this case they might have a point.

I can tell you if I knew I was gonna be on the radio in the morning speaking to 400,00 + listeners, then I'd make a judgement call to take it easy that night.
It makes me wonder how many other things he misjudged.

His mistake was doing the interview. What he said was no different than what he as a politician would normally say (alot without saying anything).
So, content wise, there is no issue outside the normal, it was merely poor presentation and doesnt look well for him.

It was a serious PR failure

Calm down lads. Plenty of scope for discussion without volleying insults at each other.

Give him a sympathy vote, thats not going to change the fact that in my opinion, he was half-cut this morning on radio.

Also, Irish people will always give a sympathy vote regardless. Just think of all the housewives ringing Joe Duffy crying when Bertie resigned in disgrace.

Not everyone thinks he was half-cut. To be honest, I wish he had been because then he'd really have to resign right away.

How? Show me, since the beginning of his term how he is a failure, and more importantly how an alternative leader party would have avoided it

Just googled "irish PM drunk".................oops whoever thought spinning that was a good idea should be shot, as it's a national embarrassment now....
i didn't hear enough evidence in the interview to say he was "drunk", and i don't think the interview was worth the international attention, the google search even brought me to a foreign forum, where an irish person is raving about it, the only responses seem to be typical drunk paddy cliches...

people don't not like cowen cos of his drinking (i typed 'maybe even not his policies' but deleted it cos i dont like being banned and thats the road we'd be heading down and i dont have the energy for an argument :D)

people dont like cowen cos he's a big ugly ineloquent savage from the bog. admit it people, the majority of you are predjudiced!? nobody likes the cut of him or the sound of him and thats 50% of the battle for popularity lost!

Albert Reynolds and Enda Kenny had the same problems too.

C'omon easy way out.. Im only looking for one or 2 specifics..

Way too much **** been bandied about in criticizing FF nad Bertie and Brian, not enough actual logic to it.

    I'll start with some facts.
    • The Government failed to properly ensure the regulator performed their duty, actually there was a total failure, and that lies directly at the govenments doorstep
    • The mccreevy giveaway budgets - serious lack of vision for a rainy day
    • Had too much of a dependancy on the construction sector, revenue in taxes generated should have bee re invested into a more longterm sustainable sector that would hold and create jobs

I could go on, but you may have noticed no mention of corruption, banker builder buddies bribes etc, because the reality is - they make good juicy headlines but dont have an effect on the situation we are in.

Isnt it ironic that a night on the pi$$ has probably done Cowen more damage than his shambolic years as minister for finance

Whatever about him actually being locked or even close to it this morning the fact is its been well proofed today that he was on the lash till at least 3am, not exactly fitting behaviour for the leader of a country when hes due on the national airwaves the next morning, do it on off the clock if you have to but dont take the pi$$ out of joe punter.

As for the FF goons whooping and cheering him this afternoon in his press conference, god help us, talk about a complete a$$ covering exercise whilst effectively condoning his behaviour, what a complete farce! FF party are nothing if not loyal  They just cant see the wood from the trees.

I disagree that it's done him more damage. Just yet more evidence of the arrogance, incompetence, and contempt with which FF and the Taoiseach treat the country.

Of course we can. Other nationalities (especially Chinese or Japanese) cannot, but us Irish are different. Genetically we are well able to drink better than any other nation on earth.
It's part of who we are, and of our innate charm.
It's not a problem, so please stop trying to make it into one!

The motivation for this argument has nothing to do with Irish culture or drinking habits
