    Hi Aoife,

Just wondering what I can do next? I'm trying to find out what grade I got in my repeat exam. I emailed the lecturer who told me to email the course director who told me to email a different lecturer and here I've hit a brick wall.

I suspect the fact that I've dropped the subject is the reason why I'm not getting a reply but I really want to know what I got.

It cost me a considerable amount to repeat the exam and I then paid for grinds which totalled even more than the cost of the exam so I want to know what I got.

Can you help me at all?

    Hi,

I'm in second year and I'm just wondering do we have to do the 'Enrol for 2010' option in student records? I've already registered my modules.

    Hi Risteard,

Enrollment is only supposed to happen once in your time in UL (the exception is if you start a new course), whereas registration happens each semester. There is no need for you to enrol and I'm pretty sure you couldn't if you tried anyway. So in short, you're good!

    Hi Daisy,

Have you accessed your transcript on the student portal?

Yes I have. It says c3, is this the correct grade? I thought it was capped at c3 hence why I was looking for a different grade.

Ah ok, I see what you mean now. the only way to find out the grade that your module would have been had it not been capped is to go through the lecturer. The issue is that your grade is a C3 - the University doesn't take potential grades into consideration. For all intensive purposes, your grade is C3. I know that is a frustrating situation but the lecturer is the only person who can tell you your potential grade.

Hey Ms. Education I'd like to ask two questions in relation to co-op and erasmus. I'm a second year.

Firstly for co-op, I'll be doing mine in the spring-summer semester this year and I was wondering if the deadline to apply for co-op somewhere outside Ireland has already passed? Also are there any grants available? I'm not entitled to a grant at home the rest of the time, so could I be entitled to a grant if I go on co-op outside Ireland? This is crucial as money is very tight.

Secondly for erasmus, the same question applies about the grant. Do I get a grant if I decide to go on erasmus, and if so does this grant only apply if you go somewhere inside Europe? (do I get a grant for instance if I go somewhere in America?) I don't see how someone could afford to pay for this themselves but I really don't have a clue about the whole thing. I've searched the UL website but didnt find much information.

    Hi Aoife,

I know the repeat exam grade will be capped at c3 but am just wondering if I will find out the actual grade I achieve rather than just the c3?

    Cheers,

    Daze.
    Hey Daisy,

The C3 will show up on your transcript. You can speak with the lecturer who corrected your paper with regard to the grade you got second time round. Hope this answers the question.

    Aoife
    Hi Daisy,

The lecturer who taught the module corrects the repeat paper as repeats are a retake of the same module.

Ok, I think we have crossed wires

You told me the lecturer can tell me but the lecturer won't reply to my email so I'm wondering what I can do next?

I don't want to be bombarding her with emails as she obviously doesn't care about my question but at the same time I want to know what actual grade I got.

Surely it's not a crazy idea wanting to know how I did in my exam?

    Hey,

You can get grants for inside Europe but not outside. The amounts given vary based on the country you are going to, in order to reflect the different costs. For an amount relating to your country, you need to speak with the International Office.

As for Co-op, you have to contact Emeline Searson. The official deadline has passed but there may be a chance if it's company with nobody placed. Similar to Erasmus, the grant depends on the country.

    Hi Daisy,

I understood your situation. The answer I gave is the still the same - the only person in a position to give you your potential grade is the lecturer. The grade doesn't exist anywhere else because as far as the University is concerned, you got a C3. If you really want the grade and the lecturer is ignoring the emails, you need to speak with her. There isn't really anything you can do next.

And of course I really want to know the grade, I'd hardly keep posting here on a whim.

    Hi Ms. Education,

I'm in second year, I transferred in the summer (from LM080 to LM083, they share the same modules in 1st year) and was wondering am I entitled to get my student card replaced free? (obviously the course thats on my id card has now changed) or do I have to pay if I want a new one?

Also read the post above about enrollment, you answered "only if your in a new course". Does that include or exclude people who have transferred courses??

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey,

I'm pretty sure you have to pay to have it replaced as the decision to change course was yours as opposed to the university's, if you know what I mean. If you transferred via Student Status and you're in second year then you shouldn't need to enroll again.

    Hey Aoife,

In terms of having reservations/complaints about the quality of lecturers, can you advise as to what the standard procedure is to bring attention to this?

    Thanks :)

    Hey,

There are a couple of different courses of action depending on how serious the matter is. If it's a very minor issue, then you can approach the lecturer yourself in an informal manner. If it is an issue that affects the whole class i.e. poor communication, no notes, etc. then I usually reccommend going through your Class Rep, once his/her nomination has been accepted by ULSU. Going through a Class Rep means the matter is formal, but the lecturer doesn't feel attacked, or shouldn't at any rate!

If you don't have a Class Rep or if you think the matter is considerably more serious or if it is an issue personal to you rather than a class issue, then I can email the on your behalf regarding the issue.

    Hope that helps,

    Aoife

I an currently in Mary I doing Liberal Arts, just started. wanted to do Journalism in UL but wasshort 15 points, now I have heard that perhaps I could transfer to that course after the first semester exams. I am wondering if anybody knows anybody who changed to Journalism. I am wondering if they would have any places available. I actually would do any course in Ul Mary I is not for me. Does anybody know what courses are likely to have places I have 440 points.????

    Hi,

When does the University send out degrees (the scroll) for those who missed this years graduation ceremonies? I graduated on August 28 and have yet to receive my degree in the mail??

So I need to pick it up or something? There seems to be no info on this matter anywhere on the ul website.

    Thanks.

You will need to see if being in Mary I qualifies you as part of UL for the purpose of Student Status. You can check this by ringing 061-202120. If it does, then the following is what you have to do.

If you are within 20 points of a place in the course, you must have a QCA of 2.6 after the first set of exams. Once you achieved that or higher, you need to complete an internal transfer form which is available here (http://www2.ul.ie/pdf/843684662.doc) and submit it to SAA in UL with Student Status Committee and Brian Hartigan as the name.

    Hope that helps,

    Aoife

    Hi,

Graduation is handled by SAA. The administrator who takes responsbility for it is Martina and you can get her on 061-202120.

Hi. I've come to the conclusion that I've chosen the wrong course. I was wondering what I'd have to do to change, or if you can change ... I'm clueless really. If you can change I'm wondering if I'd be eligible to change 'up' as I'm in a low points course, multimedia and computer games development. Ideally I'd like to change into business. The site says the 2009 points were 385, I'm not aware of what they were this year. I got 360 points. I appreciate the help.

    Hi there,

    You can change to a course for which you dont have the points if you meet two criteria;

    1) You are within 20 points of the course (so you need to find out this years points for Business)

    2) That you achieve a QCA of 2.6 or more in the first semester exams

If you meet these, then you can apply to change course, however it will probably not become effective until next year, meaning you would have to investigate the possibility of paying fees.

    Hope this helps,

    A

    Hi Aoife,

So today I found out that I have a module I didn't know I had and consequently have not been to any of the lectures for it! I didn't chose this module (it wasn't even on my list of options to choose) and it doesn't appear on my timetable. I discovered I have this module when I was browsing on student records while altering my co op cv.

I immediately emailed the lecturer to see if there was any way I could catch up or if I could get lecture notes from anywhere. She emailed back saying (rather unhelpfully I thought) that I had missed too much and I should just drop out of the module and take it up at a later date. I'm a bit confused at this as I'd imagine that passing this module is necessary for the semester! I asked her if I could get the reference number for the lecture notes so I could print them off in the print room but she said that wasn't possible. I also found out this morning that there is an exam in this module worth 40 percent next Monday. :(

I think I've been royally screwed over. Is there anything at all I can do about it?

hi if your lecture is being that unhelpful full you might want to talk to some one in the su personally . ( I think aoife may be sick at the moment )
AS a last chance resort you could try emailing your course director if it can't be sorted in any other way . they might be able to sort you out once you show them your full situation.

    Hi,

Mayo lad was right, I was out sick until today. I'd advise you to call in and speak to me, so I can look at the module code against your course and see if it is necessary and why you may not have been registered correctly. Send me an email on Aoife.Finnerty@ul.ie and we can sort out a time to meet.

    All the best,

    A

Hi everyone, I know Aoife is away at the moment but maybe someone else can help me...

Just wondering, if a module is made up of parts, eg. essays and a mid-term and then a final exam, is it necessary to pass all the individual parts individually in order to pass the module as a whole? I failed a 15% mid-term and am really worried this means I have failed the whole module :( Nothing is mentioned in the module outline about needing to pass individual assessments in order to obtain an overall pass for the module, but still...freaking out here

    Thanks !
