    1900 escape from ireland swim

    ~ 31 mins

a nice swim Ive wanted to do for some time. 1st year running event and organisers did their bests with a series of buoys highlighting the suggested route across to avail of the normal tide. Unfortunately with wind coming in the other direction I lost more time following the suggested route (lead out by kayaker ;)) than getting across and lost a couple of places when I found myself with no view of the finish and about an additional 400 metres to swim.

Clear water, no jellyfish and a crowd of both triathletes and open water swimmers made it a fun event with some fruit, water, soup and rolls about afterwards. About 4 people did it without wetsuits from what I saw - I decided after 4 hours of soaking out on the bike and running on saturday that wearing a wetsuit was wiser in an attempt to avoid a headcold all week before kenmare.

Sounds like a nice event interested. Well done. I did the escape from spike island last year and loved it, great fun :)

Yeah it was good. The event could be improved in some ways but first time out, the organisers did a good job and everyone got home safe.
For me, its just one of those swims thats nice to have done.

    2100 swim

Just needed the long swim this morning. Sore and tired after the weekend and just one of those mornings. Glad I went but nothing of note.

Thanks chief - looking forward to the weekend - done enough to hopefully enjoy the day but not enough to race it ;) The weather could go either way at this stage - arm warmers either way for the bike since its an early start down there on saturday.

Yes, I used them down there last year. They're a great job. It's amazing how cool it is at that hour of the morning in September. I wonder is Keane racing it this year? He p*ssed it last year. Given that Noble is trying to get some racing in he might give it a crack.

Theres an entry list on the corktri site - but they could let others in on the day given their pedigree ;)

Cheers - itll be an enjoyable day out either way since biking in that part of the country is always a blast.

The very best of luck Interested on Saturday. I know you don't really intend on 'racing' it, that it's more about enjoying it this year so I hope you do just that! And I hope apres halfiron is just as good!

1900 f/s the hard way at kenmare HIM, ~ 36 mins

Will update when Ive more time. 2nd out of the water today behind some bloke ... whats his name, Brian Keane - and when i say behind I mean well behind ;)

Late last night / this morning at the chipper in kenmare there was a petition to rename the event the "drowned sheep" ;) Many congrats to all that made it out of the water and around the course in one piece yesterday.

1900, the hard way for sure! Great to meet you yesterday interested. I have the race report more or less ready for publishing :), I was waiting for results frist, but still no sign as far as I can see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

He was doing our event today at 8am Macanri so I would say he has'nt even looked at yours till he got home tonight. Yours will be done before ours no doubt, slightly choppy on our race but no complaints when I heard what you went through

On the plus side, I bet that swim suited you and your overall result Interested, the longer everyone has to stay wet the better for you ;)

Cheers CW, When I read the first few words of your post I thought you were talking about interested doing your event (Loughrea?) .... and at 8am this morning .. I was thinking what sort of an endorphin junkie is this lad! Oh the chip guy you mean .. aha.

Sure I'm still in bits after the tri yesterday!

Well done. Was Keane far ahead of you out of the water? How was the bike and run?

Caught a glipse of a unofficial result sheet in a bar early Sunday morning and think he was about 5 minutes ahead. I sat in with a group for the first 800 metres into the current and then attacked them with about 400 to go before the turn towards the 3rd bouy at the shore. BK was well gone and even if he hadnt of been I doubt Id have taken him on the bike and run ;) maybe next year ... :)

Bike was fine - went according to me plan for once whereby I didnt over cook it and leave myself in pieces for the run - road surface was fine all around except for sections after the caha pass ... I was personally delighted with my run since I negative split it and finished strong and I did ... what I believe ... to be a respectable time for my abilities.

Great to meet Macanri at the event. Unfortunately I only got to speak with KentuckyPete over the phone after the event but failed to meet up do to my legs seizing late into the evening and being in bars on opposite ends of the town.

Still thrashed from weekend exertions - built into warm up and just felt tired all the way. Glad I went but it'll take a few more days to recover.

Are you taking a few weeks off now or have you another race or 2 to go this season?

one more race - have a few fun things to look forward to but in truth I feel like Im only getting into training after an enforced break during July. From some of the races Ive taken part in this year Ive a better idea of what Id like to do next year ... we'll see how the winter goes.

Good stuff. Best of luck with the last race. It's good that you know what you would like to do next year. Hope it all works out and you get a good winter of solid training.

How did the course compare in difficulty to Swinford, you are in and around the same time for both but I would guess your training was better before Kenmare.

Geraghtys time is confusing me, if you take out the extra 20 minutes on his swim his overall time was faster in Kenmare. I suppose I just look at someone like Geraghty and just assume he is at peak fitness all the time which may not be the case at all.

Tis a great question - times differed by 1 second - condition I was in varied as much as the course itself on the day.

leaving the swim to one side initially ...
Bike course in swinford was bang on 90km by my comp and included one small and short climb. I pushed the bike probably fractionally too much in swinford for the condition I was in and paid heavily on the run.

Bike course in kenmare includes two long climbs and is less than 90km. It includes a 13km section at the tail end to bring you to T2 which does facilitate pre-run nutrition and a little rest before the change. The out and back run at kenmare certainly has its ups and downs but I found it infinitely more manageable than the very long drags along busy roads in swinford. That said, when you're having a bad day the nicest places can seem like hell.

The primary difference between the two races ... July 25th and Sept 11th was that Id put together some regular training that included some longish bike and run sessions. I finished the bike in Kenmare knowing I could have gone faster, and finished the first half of the run feeling in good shape ... and was still in good shape when I finished overall. Pushing for a ten or 15 minute better bike split might have looked better on paper but I can honestly say I wouldnt have had the legs to run as well as I did on the day ;)

So ... the swim ... I suspect the swim in swinford was slightly short of 1.9km .... but the swim in kenmare played long on saturday morning. Comparing times between 2010 and 2008 (when there were alot of reports of a hard swim) tells its own interesting story with the top swimmers on that day finishing the swim under 30 minutes.

But hey ... I probably havent answered your question ... let me think / consult my magic 8-ball in the corner ... 'would catweazle have gone faster in kenmare than he did at swinford?' ... the answer ... 'it is decidedly so'
;) the power of positive thinking eh chief ;)

Thanks for that Interested, would like to give The Lost Sheep a go someday so all information gathering is needed. Ya I made the mistake in Swinford of pushing the bike section like I was in a sprint and paid a heavy price for it on the run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭pgibbo

It's very hard to compare courses in triathlon events. Even doing the same course twice can change down to the elements, etc so it's very hard to compare events. Compare Bryan Keanes results from last year - he was slower in the swim and run but faster on the bike this year compared to last.

I think the main reason the said Mr Geraghty was faster in Kenmare is that he is 3 weeks out from Barcelona and is starting to taper and peak well - at lest I hope that's the reason. Bodes well for him in Barcelona I think. At Swinford he wasn't that long after completing the Rás and was probably doing base or build stuf for Barcelona.

Sign up for it next year CW - it's a great event.

Thanks Gibbo. We will see, if we ever get confirmation about Galway 70.3, I will be going for that, there would be so many locals in that it would be great for competition, if it does go ahead it will be in September I was told.

But it must not be looking good at this stage.

Would love to have another crack at Swinford again, best triathlon I did this year (apart from Loughrea of course ;)) but Mrs C's holiday plans will come first of course.

Was talking to one of the Swinford organisers who was telling me they were going to try and get it as part of the National series next year (couldnt care a less about that) but they were looking at a 2 lap course around the first section of the run which certainly would get a thumbs up from me. That main road was a pleasure to cycle but a nightmare to run.

I was. want more now - the usual ;)
Would I recommend the race ? sure - there are things that could definitely be improved (more than one light in transition for setup, a roll of carpet in and around transition, a bigger window than 2 hours to register on a friday evening) but overall its a good race that has a good bike course and the benefits of being based on kenmare. Think the swim might have been a little short as well ;)
