on paper theres no way I should be doing it - but I reckon Ill give it a go with a 'training day' attitude. Its the first year for the event so hey .. why not.

+ 1 you could use it as an IM specific training session by doing all or part s of it at IM pace

That would be the plan alright. Belated congrats re: Athlone btw - fantastic result. As was El D's and all the other boardsies. Great work by alot of people made the weekend a resounding success from what Ive heard. Although I found myself cocooned by boxes of one shape or size whilst moving I was provided with messages from both Athlone and the Ring of Kerry throughout the weekend reminding me of where Id have rather been. In truth, Id have done the same ;)

    08/07/10 OW

    1500 f/s

No signs of jellyfish thankfully - actually no sign of anyone at the bull wall last night - water was a bit blown out and choppy due to southerly winds. Felt alot like whats become the traditional irish summer when getting changed in the rain.

See you Sunday Interested, is Mrs Interested swimming, Mrs C is out, she was offered the opportunity to back out and she bit my hand off. She is making out she needs to organize stuff for the holiday but I think a 1.9 OW swim in a lake as her first outdoor swim in a year was too rich for her blood ;)

All the best for Sunday interested. Enjoy the water and sunshine.

Nope - shes travelling to the event - but has no intention of swimming. Although I did suggest she bring her suit and take a swim around the lake after the swim leg is over - but I suspect its more likely Ill see her after the bike.

    Good stuff. See you Sunday.

Thanks chief. Yeah, Im suspiciously looking forward to this. By far the most underprepared for any race of this nature Ive ever been so theres a good sense of fear about it all - which is itself good ;) gotta do stuff to scare yourself regularly.

    22/07/10 OW

1000 f/s with open water club session - absolutely perfect conditions - and if I hear one more fable of lions mane jellyfish, humpback whales or great white sharks eating swimmers around the east coast Im gonna personally fish-slap someone ;)

    23/07/10 LC

    2000 straight
    4 * 50 f/s building on 60

    2200

not swimming regularly enough these days to worrying too much about the clock so just concentrated on stroke and body position during long swim - built into the 2k swim - watched the pace through the middle 1000. Built through the 50's - nice and controlled.

1900 OW swim @ swinford half

Weather was pretty gloomy before kick off which gave me the 'what the hell are you doing here feel'. A cheery hello from Catweazle did lift the mood - a quick intro to a friend of his and some local knowledge re-affirmed my plan to take the swim easy - since first half was against the natural movement of the water (and wind) in the lake.

Anyhow - got a glance at the race director counting down from 10 so hit the first buoy swimming side by side with Catweazle's friend. Since he was relaying and a local I felt it would be rude not to let him push on and for me to tuck in so .... another swimmer joined us (again someone that Catweazle had pointed out) so again another great chance to draft and take a bit of a rest.

Once around the island - both relay swimmers cranked it up - I was happy to sit and hold my perceived effort so park the ego and let them at it. After all Id the bike and run to look forward to. In the end I came in just under a minute of both of them and took a 4 and a half minute lead on the other individual to the bike. Needless to say I lost that without too much effort after about 30km ;)

Anyhow - good day out, very well marshalled and signed for both bike and run course. Based on last years training I took 40 minutes off my previous best time for that distance - think this was by virtue of really being strict with my HR and food for the day. Id a limited amount of liquid on the bike due to a mechanical - but complimented this with regular chunks of power bar - Im kinda used to long distances without much fuel and the HR was maintained at around 65% so ... felt reasonable on the run for most of it - but when you run as slow as I do you'd expect that - but managed to keep fueling all the way through which was a first ;)

5.25 is for me. Delighted to meet Catweazle and hear of his safe departure on holidays. Sorry I didnt get to meet / congratulate Nomadic on a fantastic first outing at the distance. Based on the amount of work he'd put in this season it was no surprise he did so well ... but great to hear his recent niggles didnt inhibit his enjoyment and pace during the day.

Sorry for the wordy post ;)

Well done. Sorry I didn't get to meet you too. Were you wearing a black tri suit and was it you in the sprint finish at the end? I heard a lot of screams but I was propped up against a fence so didn't manage to see it.

Thankfully with a lot of rest my sholder and groin we good to go on the day.

    No worries chief.
No - I dont do sprint finishes - especially on a day like sunday - it would have messed up my average HR readings ;) No - with 5km to go I heard a yelp fro behind me after justing passing an aid station. It was a team mate - we shuffled in the rest of the race together trying to determine which one of us had suggested our accomodation. The guy at the finish with the mic knew he was chasing his tail when he suggested we sprint finish for the crowd and was met with laughter from both of us.

Well Done interested, that's a good time.

You were very gallant letting the relay lads out off the water first:rolleyes:

Bjorn is doing well - 1st and 2nd in his last two races. Some going.

Well done Interested, great time. Must be nice to be up near the front of the action, I'd love to be in that position some day! What next for you dude? What's your next aim?

Finally got the broadband sorted here, nice meeting you Interested and well done on the race. That's a great swim time as I know you said you would be holding back a little on it. Hope you catched up on some sleep after the antics the previous night. Did they play the National Anthem at the end, always a big crowd pleaser in Mayo at the end of the night

yeah, gallant ... ;) thats me ... happy to have had a draft for a spell from them to be honest.

    re: Bjorn
No real shocker here since he's been one of the top guys now for a few years. He'd a great result down home in SA very early in the year. Good to see he appears to be over a recent injuries.

its a nice place to watch the race unfold for a bit alright ;)
whats next ? hoping to get some training in over the next 8 weeks or so. IM is not on the cards this year though - theres little point in spending alot of hard to come by cash travelling when I havent had any time to prepare. Theres a few other things to keep me going before the end of the season but its definitely been a case of play it by ear so far.

    Vague enough ? ;)

Yeah, great to meet up chief - no the nights sleep after the race was just as bad. Nothing to do with the race or race organisers but Ill be avoiding that particular hotel forever more after my brief spell there. I could have just gotten unlucky but ... anyhow ...

    Enjoy the hols
