Does anyone else think the OP may be in cahoots with the National Lottery to boost sales of scratch cards?

They give him a grand to tell us about his 'windfall' & we all go out to buy scratch cards. I've never wanted to buy a scratch card as much in my life after reading this thread.

/ gets coat & heads to the nearest Lotto agent.

I win €1,000 every time I decide not to buy 500 scratch cards... guaranteed.
Trick is go for the €3 ones aka bingo/crossword...etc they have a 1 in3.9 odds where the €1/2 ones have a 1 in 7!
Odds of what though? Winning €2 or getting a free scratch-card? The odds seem like a useless number if that's the case.

I was on my way to a friend/acquaintance's 21st before and was a bit late in buying the present. I had budgeted €20 as a present to give to him but it was pissing rain and I was like "fook this, I will get a taxi and give him €10 worth of scratchcards instead!". I nipped in to the shop, slammed the €20 on the counter and asked for 5 scratch-cards, got the €10 back and hopped in the taxi patting myself on the back for a job well done.

Two days later I get a text from the birthday lad in question. Jammy bastard made a €1000 on one card and €100 on another card! That was my luck reserves for the next lifetime depleted and I used it for someone else. That will teach me to be a cheap-skate.

Ha, reminds me of my time working in a newsagent's, when a woman had given her boss a few scratch cards for his/her birthday and of course, E1000 on one. Her boss.

Congrats anyway OP, most I've won is a decanter and two glasses. Though that wasn't to do with the Lotto. And I was 12.

    That was a shit day.

The lowest you can win is €4 (on the €2.50 bingo card)
i usually win €6/8 more times then not, occasionally i get €25 once i won €500, rarely i get nothing, my boss (an accountant) was sceptical too when i told him, but after seeing me Friday after Friday constantly and consistently winning he gave in and bought two and lost on one and won €6 so he broke even

it's better odds then winning the lotto any ways ;) \and its less of a money waster then th €2 ones where you have worse off odds and even when you win its ust a 'free' one!! and they are waay more fun to play! the monopoly ones were really good fun! and someone i know won the €25,000 on that one!

i guess im just one of the lucky ones :D

I emailed the national lottery a few months back about the odds of winning the different prizes on three of their scratchcards and these are the odds they gave me. Bear in mind that a new series of cards is released every few months so the odds may change very slightly but I'll never buy a scratchcard again..

    Winning Streak - cost €3

Prize Number per 1 million tickets

    €5 - 104,500
    €6 - 54,500
    €8 - 23,500
    €10 - 15,000
    €25 - 6,500
    €50 - 300
    €100 - 150
    €250 - 44
    €500 - 16
    €1000 - 6
    €5000 - 0.5
    €25000 - 0.5
    €100,000 - 0.2

All Cash Gold - cost €2

Prize Number per 1 million tickets

    Free Tickets - 89,000
    €4 - 117,000
    €5 - 54,000
    €8 - 8,000
    €10 - 6,000
    €25 - 1,000
    €40 - 600
    €50 - 300
    €80 - 104
    €100 - 60
    €250 - 20
    €1,000 - 4
    €10,000 - 1

    All Cash - cost €1

Prize Number per 1 million tickets

    Free Ticket - 55,000
    €2 - 119,500
    €4 - 24,500
    €8 - 6,000
    €25 - 5,000
    €50 - 700
    €500 - 24
    €5,000 - 2

So if the op won 1000 euro from a 2 euro scratchcard, they actually hit a 250000 to 1 shot , which would have paid 500 grand in a bookies, not 1 grand..

    Congratulations.

I think the most I ever won was €8.00. Having said that I don't buy many. I think I've bought about fifteen or twenty in my entire life.

Ah sure I was just curious, seeing as prizes of 25 quid and over seem to be very rare. The best prize (taking into account the price of the scratchcard) I've ever won on one was 8 euro from a 1 euro scatchcard, which as the odds above show was about a 166 to 1 shot. The worst value gambling around in my opinion. Prize bonds give a very poor return on average too but at least you can get your money back any time, although inflation will have eroded it slightly.

Sometimes when I find myself wanting to buy a scratchcard when standing in the queue at a shop, I refrain from doing so and instead I go home and put 2 euro on a 80/1 shot etc on paddypower (eg underestimated underdog being 2-0 up at half-time) and I've hit these types of bets a couple of times..
