An eight-year-old boy risked serious injury when he picked up a viable explosive device in a school playground in Antrim.

Brendan Shannon, 8, from St Comgall's Primary School in Antrim lifted what police confirmed was a viable device and brought it into the classroom.

    More details here from BBC
Could have been an absolute tragedy.

Another bomb has been found this morning at a school in Antrim. Considering this is a catholic school it is highly unlikely that it was a dissident republican attack. I would go as far as saying that it in no way was.
Much more likely that it was an attempted loyalist sectarian attack on innocent schoolchildren. Their MO.

Will this be the start of a series of tit for tat attacks?

Looking likely that this crowd carried it out considering their actions in the area...
    Real UFF wiki

This is some of their recent actions:
24 July 2009; The Real UFF claimed responsibility for a pipe bomb attack on a house in Brantwood Gardens, Antrim. Five people narrowly escaped injury when the device exploded in the front garden. The house was owned by a Catholic family and was in a mixed Catholic-Protestant area.[2][3][4]
25 September 2009; The Real UFF claimed responsibility for leaving a small bomb outside a house in the Fountain Lane area of Antrim. It failed to explode.[5][6]
15 January 2010; The Real UFF claimed responsibility for planting two explosive devices near a community centre in Antrim that was being used by members of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Police described the devices as "crude but non-viable".[7]
February 2010; The Real UFF made a death threat against the Sinn Féin MLA for North Belfast, Gerry Kelly.[8]
13 March 2010; The Real UFF claimed responsibility for a gun attack on a house in Antrim. A shot was fired through a window, No one was injuried in the attack. [9]
11 August 2010: The Real UFF claimed responsibility for leaving a pipe bomb on the windowsill of a house on Fir Grove Lane, Antrim. It failed to explode. The house was owned by a Catholic family.[10][11]
12 August 2010: It's believed the Real UFF were responsible for planting two viable pipe-bombs ouside separate houses in Antrim. One of the devices partially exploded causing damage to a front of a house, both devices were defused later by the British Army.

Catholic, Protestant, Republican, Loyalist, they're all a pack of muppets.

I mean, an 8 year old boy, what the **** has he done to deserve a pipe bomb attack? By the time he was born the peace agreement in Ireland was 4 years old! Imagine that.

I'm beginning to think the Troubles may be making an unwelcome return to the streets of Northern Ireland. :(

Let's hope the thugs for this potential atrocity are found and brought to justice, whoever they may be.

If it was a unionist attack, then it is to be expected. Dissident Republicans would love nothing better than to see a catholic school blow up with 40 dead kids and with the UVF responsible. They want to see the troubles, in all of its insanity, back on the streets because they are fascist scum and refuse to engage in the democratic process.

I begin to question whether the people who planted a bomb in a school are capable of any kind of thought. I mean are they sentient? Do they actually qualify as human beings?

How nice Denerick. Don't condemn those most likely to have carried out the attack. Nothing to say about the RUFF?
Thats rubbish, no republican would like to see that.

I said dissident Republicans, not Republicans at large. The fact is that dissidents would love nothing better than such an awful tragedy in order to 'justify' such retaliatory attacks against the Unionist community and bring the Troubles back in all its horror.

You cannot deny that dissident Republicans would love to see a Catholic school blown up with scores of dead children.

Obviously the UVF are scum, my second paragraph deals with that. But this is the natural result of dissident provocation. They are getting what they want, one way or the other.

I agree with what Denerick is trying to say: The dissidents on both sides want an excuse to have a lash.

Not at all. In no way would they want that. They don't want sectarian violence at all. Sure even the PIRA didn't.

    I can and will.

Its not the UVF. Its the Real UFF(dissident loyalists?) Natural result? Not going to take the line that they should have rose above it no? You saying that seen as it is "natural" it is justified?

The UFF never went away, they have been at it routinely. Thankfully they are useless without their British handlers

As for Denerik, there is something quite sick about that level of cynical point scoring. The loyalists attacked a school, leave republicans out of it

The loyalist paramilitary groups act in a complete vacuum so? How about a list of dissident republican activity over the past year and half to refresh your memory - link.

The only people who ever protest about making these attrocities seperate incidents are the other side's paramilitary fantasists who want to treat it as a valid tit-for-tat event. The fingers get pointed and the We-Can't-Let-Them-Treat-Us-Like-This gets spouted, all so they can continue jerking off about playing [army man/oppressed idiot; pick as individually appropriate please]. Anyone else I've ever spoken with has always grouped all of these acts of violence by both sides under a single heading of Scum With Weapons Act Again.

You don't believe in cause and effect, no?

Anyway, I'll not bother ye in this thread again. But I sense a tragedy in the coming, and it won't be nice.

Loyalist paramilitary, or at least sections of it, never stopped. So, yes, it does exist in a vacuum. I am pointedly saying this is NOT tit for tat

They aren't targeting dissident republicans, they are targeting the local catholic population. You are veering very close to suggesting these schoolkids deserve it.

Little school children are now the preferred target of the unionist terrorists. Cowardly and sick.

    So its the kids fault?

These guys never observed a ceasefire. Dissident activity or not, they would be trying to ethnically cleanse the local catholics. If you want to jump up and down about fascism, start with the only group in Ireland with actual fascist links who are pipe bombs.

Or is that not controversial enough for you?

Why not just condemn the attack without the intellectual vandalism?

What are you on about? That is ridiculous obfuscation. Clearly the unionists who undoubtedly commited this are scum, but its a reaction to dissident republican activity. Dissident Republicans want to see dead catholic children, and want to see unionists responsible for that. They know this kind of thing will trigger the troubles all over again.

And yet again, you refuse to debate the wider issue and oh-so-happily look over dissident activity and fascism.

Why is it a retarded thread? Its a discussion about a current and horrible news story.

Oh sorry I forgot, we're only allowed comment on terrorism in the north if its carried out by nationalists.

This place is a twilight zone sometimes. Do people in the real world actually think like this?

Seriously cop on. So when the republicans carry out terrorist attacks, its the republicans fault, and when the unionists carry out terrorists attacks its.... still the republicans fault....

    Total hypocrite....

Anyone who wants to kickstart the Troubles are both equally deluded. The heavyweights on the Unionist and Republican dissident side merge into one another. Its hard to tell the difference really.

Just one giant blob of scum.

    And their numerous internet apologists.

I'd agree with that. I'll never yield from my position of peace and condeming anyone that wants to engage in political violence in Northern Ireland. I suppose you could say that I'm a fundamentalist.

So should we just ignore the story? Pretend it never happened? Bury our heads in the sand so to speak?

But you are the one apologising for loyalist terrorism on this thread.

I cannot believe that you believe half the crap you post

Where have I apologised for loyalist terrorism?

Retract the statement or I'm calling the mods in.

I said very clearly that this was natural: 'Scum A' were always going to react to the actions of 'Scum B'. 'Scum B' would naturally be very pleased to have dead children as this would lead to a resurgence of violence across the province, destroying Good Friday and the delicate peace process.

In reality both sets of scum are indistinguishable. Both are rabid animals that barely deserve to call themselves human.
