    Wives suffer similar obligations.

    Where do you live, Afghanistan?

Paying for sex with prostitutes is like making your cat dance with you on its hind legs.

You know it's wrong, but you try to convince yourself that they're enjoying it as well.

I know a farmer that visited a prostitute once.
First it was too dry then it was too wet and then he complained about the price..

Prostitution in Ireland is technically legal because of pressure from advocacy groups.Buying sex is illegal. The thinking is that you are making criminals out of vulnerable people who are non-violent and only taking advantage of a marketplace.

They criminalise the buyers who are seen to be taken advantage of the women.

Even as a feminist, this viewpoint makes me uncomfortable, like the women involved are so weak and easily corrupted that they have to be protected from big bad men. Completely ignoring the fact that there are (usually) two consenting adults involved in the transaction.

ETA: I can see the wisdom of it where trafficked women are exploited.

That can be used as an argument for the legalisation/regulation or the further criminalisation of prostution TBH

To criminalise it drives it underground though. I'd use trafficked women as one of the best arguments for legalisation or regulation of the prostitution industry.

It's illegal for a punter to solicit a prostitute.

It's illegal to have a third party arrange the deal.

It's illegal to advertise your sexual services for money.

So there is no way you can actually come to an agreement with a punter without breaking the law. So while the act itself is not illegal. The steps you must take before it are.

It's illegal to solicit on the street.

And it's illegal to run a brothel, to have a premises as a brothel, to organise prostitution, to advertise sex for sale or a brothel, to coerce another into prostitution or to live off the earnings of the prostitution.

Apart from that it's all fine and dandy.
Apart from that! that is some list, and that is what many people would consider "normal prostitution", so is it any surprise people are saying it is illegal or unaware of all these restrictions -yet people are still giving blunt answers like "NO", "its legal".

It would be like me saying

Did you know growing cannabis sativa is legal here, did you know that?

    "its illegal"

-No its not, look it up before making a fucking fool of yourself, Oh did I neglect to say you needed a license and it can only be certain approved varities, still perfectly legal though.

I think its illegal to pay somebody for sex but the loophole that is used is that the escorts charge for their time and what they do in that time is down to the escort, if you get my drift ;)

Not so, Pauleta - paying for sex is legal. Asking for it or advertising for it isn't.

    No
Did you know that prostitution was legal in this country?

No, actually this thread has been informative (a first for AH?)

Did you know that the red light district in Dublin was once one of the biggest red light districts in Europe?

Yes, along with the worst slums in Europe, the monto district was famous, frequented by many upper middle class and aristocratic types towards the end of the 19th century and right up to the 1920/30's.

How aware are you of prostitution in Ireland?

Aware of the lower levels i.e., streetwork and advertised escorts, but as far as the 'high class' call girls scene have very little knowledge.

Would you/Have you ever had sex with a hooker in Ireland?

No, as there are an abundance of men online begging for nsa sex.

I would definitely be in favour of fully legitimizing the business, as Millicent said, that would go a long way towards dealing with the trafficking issue.

I abhor the whole Ruhama catholic thing. Instead of insisting women are victims, in a legitimate regularized industry, sex workers could have protection, legal rights and safety that is not possible under morality driven laws at present.

theres websites for escorts in Ireland, pretty much the same as prostitution. I think if it was illigal it woild be harder to find than using google.
Honestly, I can't see why people would go into prosecution if they could avoid it, At the least they can work on as a camgirl or something online and not have to touch anyone.

Street prostitution, is illegal afaik, and with good reason. Girls doing that could be either trafficked, or need the money for drugs.
Allowing brothels to be run legally, under strict rules and regulations is fine IMO, if you can't stop something, at least make sure its safe, healthy, and no ones being exploited.

I do not see any justification for prostitution to be illegal. I can understand why kerb crawling is illegal as it creates hassle for local residents. I don't see any difference between prostitution and porn.

Quite, since pornstars are paid there is no difference.

Okay have just discovered what camgirls are.

Sh1t, you can get paid for that!! sure I thought that was how you moved on from the emailing to an irl date! (joke.... ok?!!)

Anyway, kind of like the quagmire that is sex texts and emails of the same ilk. These are usually agreed (if you look in RI) as betraying a partner, so how is doing the cam girl thing really different from working as a prostitute?

Is getting a prostitute not like going out to dinner, whereas fishing for wimmin is like cooking at home?

How is going "out to dinner" shameful?

Exactly, to a pay for the sexual act might actually release the man from the whole area of deception, pretense and betrayal, however that is usually not enought for people who find themselves interested in more than the initial or casual sexual contact with someone other than their partner.

I live in Limerick city center, and about two months ago, just right outside my house became the new prostitute hang out. Not being bad right, but they dance on the street and everything. There is dodgy ****ers that drive by in their cars all the time. And the cops know, and they defo have pimps. Like me and the girls I live with get cars slowing down to us all the time as we're walking anywhere near our house. It's kind a scary like! I got home from the pub the other night and there was a crowd of like 4 or 5 prostitutes sheltering on the street under the protection of the trees that are in my garden. We didn't know what was going on.

I don't particularly mind prostitutes, legalise it away. But take it away from my house, it's not nice nice getting hassled by pervy punters for walking down the street to and from your gaff (in a t-shirt and jeans like!).

I recently read an article about Irish Prostitution. It claims that while many acts, such as soliciting and operating a brothel are illegal, the act of prostitution between two consenting adults (presumably done in private or secret) is perfectly legal.

The only stipulation is that Ireland's law demands you are 18 to be a prostitute. Surely somebody in the Government has raised the issue of changing the law so that people can be prosecuted for acts of prostitution?

In these economic times, or just generally Irish times, is Prostitution actually that prevalent in Ireland? Have I been living under a rock for most of my life because, and I've heard stories from the likes of Leeson Street, but never had much knowledge that prostitution really existed in Ireland.

My question, would you pay for sex with a complete stranger as if it were another business transaction?
