    I found out the other night that prostitution is legal in Ireland. Our government has decided at some point that selling your body for sexual activities is deemed acceptable in our society. Would you consider sleeping with a prostitute shameful? Did you know that prostitution was legal in this country? Did you know that the red light district in Dublin was once one of the biggest red light districts in Europe? How aware are you of prostitution in Ireland? Would you/Have you ever had sex with a hooker in Ireland?

    Yes it is legal, just advertising it is not. I would not consider it shameful, unless the person was forced into it or w/e. No I have not, how hot is she?

    Also, of course it should be legal.

    Apparently it's illegal to run a brothel and to solicit sex for money in a public place but other than that it's all completely legal.

    I couldn't sleep with a prostitute...well I could, but not in her capacity as a prossy...not because it's immoral or any of that kind of thing but I just imagine it to be so sterile and perfunctionary. I imagine the act of paying for sex with a woman who has absolutely no interest in you, possibly despises you, is more demeaning for the punter than the provider.

    Having said that, of course prostitution should be legalised. It's a no-brainer. What the hell are we do legislating for morality in the first place?! It's not as if the service provided is somehow illicit or dangerous. And regulation is the only way that the safety of the working girls can be guaranteed. Also, it would bring in a nice little earner for the state.

    Just an example of how ludicrousour laws are in this regard. There was a man prosecuted recently in Cork for running a brothel. S'posedly he was making a mint. The girls who worked for him said they worked in a safe, clean environment and made an excellent living, and felt under no compulsion to do what they were doing. And yet somehow, the man was busted, is now in prison, and the girls out of work. Not only that, but the investigation was started in the first place because the owner reported a man who was looking for underage girls to the police. So he does his civic duty, brings a sexual predator to the attention of the authorities, and he's shut down, incarcerated, and a potential means of indentifying paedos is lost. And for what? Nobody is served by the state sticking their long noses into our sex lives.

    In 1993, the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act criminalised soliciting and kerbcrawling for the first time. It gave the cops further license to harass prostitutes. Anyone found loitering with the intention of soliciting can be directed by a cop to leave that place immediately. Failure to comply can result in a £250 fine for a first conviction, £500 for a second and £500 plus four months imprisonment for a third or subsequent conviction. In the first seventeen months of the Act, 116 women were prosecuted, with only 12 prosecutions of men. Clients who pay for sex with minors are rarely prosecuted.

    I'd visit a prostitute if I weren't so shy about the whole thing. It's not much different than having a girlfriend except I don't have to take a prostitute out for dinner, buy her ridiculously overpriced perfume for her birthday, or put up with the constant nagging and attempts to change me. Not a bad deal if you ask me. Ban marriage and legalize prostitution, it's the only way forward.

    I don't understand why prostitution is illegal. Selling is legal. fucking is legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal? You know, why should it be illegal to sell something that's perfectly legal to give away? I can't follow the logic on that one at all! Of all the things you can do, giving someone an orgasm is hardly the worst thing in the world. In the army they give you a medal for spraying napalm on people! In civilian life you go to jail for giving someone an orgasm!

    It has already been detailed that soliciting in public and loitering with the intent of prostitution are illegal, your point is moot. In the circumstance you have proposed something illegal would be occurring, but it would not be prostitution.

    Should it be fully legal? Why not? While i am personally not a fan of the concept of reducing sex to a purely mechanical action people who go to prostitutes clearly are. I also find the concept that anyone who ends up selling their bodies for money is somehow mentally or emtionally damaged to be an all together too convenient excuse for the people who abhor such a thing so assume that all others should too.

    Like any issues, it's complicated and as an industry it undoubtedly has it's victims, however, sweeping them away under the rug of illegality is helping no one.

    In recent years there have been two further police operations. Operation Quest was launched in 2003, with the aim of tackling human trafficking, prostitution and criminality within the lap dancing industry, followed by Operation Hotel in 2005, with the aim of tackling the trafficking of females from Eastern Europe to work in the sex industry in Ireland.

    The laws have nothing to do with stopping sex trafficing and exploitation. They're nothing more than a vestige of the Catholic Ireland of the peeping windows mentality that pervaded the country, and especially Dail Eireann, until relatively recently. How on earth does prohibiting the selling of a commodity which the vast majority of the population enjoys legally, have any impact on sex trafficing? The only way to ensure that the prostitutes are treated properly, and work in a clean, safe environment is to legalise the industry, and regulate it. Otherwise what we have is an unlikely coalition of Christian moralists and feminists paying lip service to the protection of women, whilst actually pursuing their own narrow interests.
