In 1993, the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act criminalised soliciting and kerbcrawling for the first time. It gave the cops further license to harass prostitutes. Anyone found loitering with the intention of soliciting can be directed by a cop to leave that place immediately. Failure to comply can result in a £250 fine for a first conviction, £500 for a second and £500 plus four months imprisonment for a third or subsequent conviction. In the first seventeen months of the Act, 116 women were prosecuted, with only 12 prosecutions of men. Clients who pay for sex with minors are rarely prosecuted.

I don't understand why prostitution is illegal. Selling is legal. fucking is legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal? You know, why should it be illegal to sell something that's perfectly legal to give away? I can't follow the logic on that one at all! Of all the things you can do, giving someone an orgasm is hardly the worst thing in the world. In the army they give you a medal for spraying napalm on people! In civilian life you go to jail for giving someone an orgasm!

And yet somehow, the man was busted, is now in prison, and the girls out of work. Not only that, but the investigation was started in the first place because the owner reported a man who was looking for underage girls to the police. So he does his civic duty, brings a sexual predator to the attention of the authorities, and he's shut down, incarcerated, and a potential means of indentifying paedos is lost. And for what? Nobody is served by the state sticking their long noses into our sex lives.

Operation Quest was launched in 2003, with the aim of tackling human trafficking, prostitution and criminality within the lap dancing industry, followed by Operation Hotel in 2005, with the aim of tackling the trafficking of females from Eastern Europe to work in the sex industry in Ireland.
