Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Did someone say you can sell your books back to the SU or something.

Loads of books needed to be got rid of!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

You can sell them through the second hand book shop in the SU building. You decide what books you want to sell, set the price yourself and then you're given a ticket (which you need to keep!). The book is put on the shelves there and when it's sold the Bookshop will contact you and give you the money. You don't get any money until the book has been sold. They're selling the book on your behalf, you're not selling it to them and then they sell it on. They just act as a middle man.

I'm starting now in Sept, doing History, German and Maths...how many of the books do you reckon are necessary? And which ones could I get out of the library and all...

when your lecturer recommends a certain book, go get it straight after. I wouldn't bother with the library, they do have like 3 copies and there never available.. I don't know about your other subjects but for History, there are a lot of little books you have to get to help you with your essays in your tutorials, you will find all this out in the upcoming weeks

there like only 10 euro or so but there are a few to get.. :)

Yikes! I didn't realise the books would be so expensive!
I'm doing Music Technology with Geography and Maths hopefully.

Do we find out when we start what books we need or is there somewhere online that we can check?
Also do we need to own all the books? Or can we borrow from the library?

yeah I know, my biggest regret was buying my first year books brand new, they cost me 100 euro for just 2 geog books :(.
Some departments already have a list of books that you can purchase, but just wait until you attend your lectures and find out what books that the lecturer recommends.. Emm you might be able to get some of the books in the library but as I said before, they do be quite limited. Your lecturer will explain all this to you :)

If that's for EN356 , most of that is on google books. He'll set you reading for every lecture from it, so if you're into buying the massive, heavy books, go ahead but the bits you need are on google books. It's really heavy and quite expensive, just a heads up.

Haha yeah, cheers. I saw it was on Google Books but I thought if it was cheap I might get one to have. I'm not bothered now.

Does anyone know is there anywhere on campus to sell books back? All of mine were bought in the bookshop. They've been sitting round the house for about a year now, and to be honest, I'm sick of looking at them!

give them to the Student Union and they sell them on your behalf, they don't take any money from you, and when someone buys one of your books, the student union let you know and you get the money :)

i did this course, graduated on friday!
i cant really remember first year books, i sold them on but i do know the john curry book comes in handy for all essays! cant remember the name of it, have it in my room somewhere i think, its green! all the UCD books (suzanne quinn et al) are great too.

the internet is really handy for this course because there are so many gov documents and reports, and there are always new publications regarding policies so loads of books arent always needed!

send me a pm if u have any questions about the course or books for SocPol or Soc (i have a few lying around, dunno what ones, so if u let me know what you're looking for il see if i have them!) best of luck! its a good course!
