as for having maths in the LC i dont think it would matter that much i remember while doing my class1 med there was a guy who was getting a job with Ryanair and he told me that he failed most of his gcse.

while flying you listen out to other acft and build up a three dimensional picture of were the other traffic is relative to your position.

You can become an airline pilot with the Junior Cert technically, AFAIK there's no official education standards - just those set out by the flying school.

Maths is important, you need to be able to determine things like what rate of descent will get a plane at a certain level at a certain time etc instantaneously.

you need to pass fourteen exams (ATPL) which covers everything from nav to airlaw and these are set by the IAA/JAA not the local flight school.
the likes of flight planning etc with rate of decent is though while doing your PPL.

No I mean that anybody can become a pilot regardless of their previous education. Some flight schools do have minimum education standards before accepting students.

from what i can remember even the likes of BA had a section for the LC on their applicatiion form a few years ago, saying that i have been in the tower on a number of occasions very interesting indeed.

the big kahuna- just apply. ur not gonna get passed the interview so u mite aswell just submit an application....
im not being a bitch, but there is not a chance u will get passed the interview coz even if ur aptitude is perfect- they want people who are motivated etc & u clearly arent

What are you talking about? Just because I am asking questions on here does not mean I'm not motivated. If anything it's the opposite. Obviously you can't understand, but before you apply for anything, you research it and try and find some answers to questions you may have. Am I not doing this here?? Surely thats motivation in itself - I am researching for a better future but have to consider other important things in order to reach a decision.

I have a family and a mortgage - which from the way you are talking you obviously don't?

In response to Jammyc - thanks. Appreciate the kind words and advice. :) As Jammyc said, why would I put myself and my family in to financial peril? Family will always come first.

I applied for this as well. Not sure if they're looking for young folk or if being 31 will count against me. Hopefully any damage done will be offset by the PhD in Physics!

Yes maybe the term personal abuse is takin too literally on this!!!! It wasn't personal abuse per se. I was just trying to make the point that if I want something that badly u will work for it- nite & day & weekends & do whatever it takes to get there. If I wanted something that much I wouldn't worry if I had weekends off etc! & all I was stating was that I'm sure they will want to recruit people who are highly motivated to be at ATCer!! I didn't mean to offend the big kahuna, i was just making a point! I think any1 who gets as far as actually being recruited as a student on the programme would be very very lucky!! Sure u mite aswell apply :-)

I did.... Even though I don't think I'l get very far. Even though I have learned navigation, radiotelephony, air law, human performance for the ppl.... It's not really that relevant to ATC.. Who's sittin the paper & pencil aptitude in Dublin??

Actually Nevevix, those subjects are very relevant to ATC and if you are accepted on to the controller course you will sit exams in those particular subjects

Did anyone get an email confirmation of their application?

When I click submit I dont get any acknowledgement - it just brings me back up the page and highlights:

*Please enter at least one phone number below and check your preferred phone number

    (which I have done obviously)

I would try putting in a second number anyway, or else putting in 'n/a'. It seems to require an entry into the second number field even though it says it doesn't. When completed you should get an email straight away.

No.. 31 is not too old. I reckon you would want to be under 40 but I could be wrong. I know anyway early 30's is not a problem.

And to everyone else... look... why dont you all just apply and dont mind the what ifs and what nots. If you have the minimum entry requirements you will get called for an aptitude test. You have to score a really really high aptititude test to make the top 100 for interviews. Then there are a few more interviews after that and medicals and the test in Dublin also. It sounds like you are all applying thinking you have the job already.

If you have a family and mortgage go interest only for the two years. Trust me banks will only be too happy to help out if they hear what salary you will be on if you get it in the end. And you will only appraoch that if you are sent a contract to sign.

Go for it why not? Dont look back when you are 50 thinking "What if...". Better to try and fail than never to try at all.

    Good luck to you all.

I wish I knew more about the aptitude tests... Really really want this job but when you hear that 756,897 people* have applied it is a bit depressing! But sure I'll just go for it and not get my hopes up!

I got to the last 50 out of 6k for the Aer Lingus trainee pilot jobs 3 times and the same with BA so I'm a veteran of navigating big fields only to be kicked in the nuts :D

    For those applying

I applied in 2007; Here is the old thread from the discussion we were having during the process; There was 3 or 4 iirc from boards that got the job. There should be a lot of good tips and advise in there

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055128278

Good luck to all applying this time around

Anyone get any replies from their application apart from the generic email above yet?

Just checked and I've received nothing yet. Their recruitment process does state that the schedule for the paper and pencil aptitude test is 30th August to 11th September, so they don't have much time to let us know.

It also states that dates are indicative and the actual schedule will depend oin the number of applications received.

Good point. Personally I hope that it isn't until after the weekend of the 11th as I've got something else on that week that I can't get out of.

Just got an email, inviting me to an aptitude test on the 30th of August

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 419 ✭✭bohsfan

The 30th? Is that down in Limerick? I've got an invite for Dublin for the 1st but I'm flying that day for a wedding so looks like I might be missing out unless I can change venue...
