We Might NEVER Know If Heaven Exists...

Do you know what the sad realisation is? The fact that there is a very real chance that we will NEVER know whether heaven exists or not. There are millions upon millions of people who are clinging onto the hope of an afterlife once we pass away. Also, we would just like to know one way or another whether heaven exists.

However, there is a very real chance that we will simply never know. Of course if heaven exists, one would hope that we would be aware, and I'm sure that it would be an incredible experience. HOWEVER, if heaven doesn't exist, and once our heart stops beating and we inhale our last breath, then we just go blank...we will never know! When you close your eyes for the last time, all consciousness will be lost and we will never know about it.

Of course, I have no idea and hope that we will know if heaven exists or not, but there is a real chance that we will simply never know.

Heaven is a place on earth.

Belinda Carlisle said it, so it must be true.

Not knowing is what keeps life interesting, in my honest opinion. If i knew that heaven was waiting for me, life would seem meaningless.

I personally don't care if there is or isn't. It just doesn't play that much of a role on my life.

Also, might want to discuss this topic here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=526

There's no reason for me to think heaven does exist, so I assume it doesn't anyway.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I believe when you die, it's over. Blank. Realised that when I was put under general anaesthetic. One second, awake, the next awake hours later in pain. Death to me is the same without the wakeup. Thus no heaven no hell, no nothing.

Recently I spoke to an actor who tried to kill himself. His family saved him. His now realisation is that suicide victims actually believe they will be around to see the results of their actions. In fact they are snuffed out. There is no heaven, no hell. I wish it were otherwise.

Enjoy your life, you only get one chance at it.

You are certainly in a philosophical mood tonight OP, thinking about our place in the universe and heaven etc. It's strange because I just had a long similar discussion with a housemate lastnight. I remember a few years ago when I was starting college I started to think about this sort of stuff, religion, the universe and the meaning of everything - my personal period of enlightenment :D

Yeah, I just came to the conclusion that we will probably never have answers to many of these questions no matter how long we pursue the solutions and how far we advance scientifically. I suppose it's one of lifes mysteries that makes everything more interesting.

Sure if there is then wonderful, if there isn't then it hardly matters, you're gone anyway, without any regrets.

When we die we go into a hole in the ground and get eaten my a million maggots. If you believe there is a heaven and indeed a hell you need your brain checked.

The belief that there is an afterlife - that when human bodies die, that our souls are transported to some mystical place, where they live for eternity - is one of the vainest, narcassistic inventions we have ever come up with.

What a stupid thing to say, there's nothing wrong with someone who believes in the Christian faith. Show some respect for those that do.

Deep? The OP is starting to sound like boards.ie's very own Richard Dawkins.

    (it's not really a great thing... :p)

    That's debatable.

tell us, what is your view of heaven then

is it the classic greek influenced clouds/gates etc or something different

You going through an existential crisis at the moment OP?

I'll save you the trouble of thinking about it over the next few months: there's no afterlife or god, religion is all man-made stories, and this is the only life you'll ever have.

    Start enjoying it!

    That's debatable.

So long as people aren't trying to force their religious beliefs on other people, then whats the problem?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,784 ✭✭✭Superbus

It may well be a narcissistic relic from an outdated Christian mindset, but the idea of heaven is so comforting after a bereavement, at least in my experiences. The thought that they're just gone, as if they'd never been around, is a deeply depressing one, in my opinion.

It doesn't matter what my view of heaven is, as it's besides the point i'm making. I don't believe that someone should be able to show disrespect to another person's religion in the way FearDark has. I'm not Islamic or Buddhist etc.. but i'd never insult what they believe their afterlife to be like.
