Ireland's Most Interesting Transport Tunnels

As a companion to JDs bridges thread, how about tunnels. Road wise its limited, but there are loads of rail tunnels both closed and open. I'll kickstart it with a few that I have seen but sadly didn't photograph. (so piccies borrowed from generous internet souls.) The first is Durrow tunnel on the Waterford - Dungarvan…

As a companion to JDs bridges thread, how about tunnels. Road wise its limited, but there are loads of rail tunnels both closed and open. I'll kickstart it with a few that I have seen but sadly didn't photograph. (so piccies borrowed from generous internet souls.)

The first is Durrow tunnel on the Waterford - Dungarvan stretch of railway. I saw this one when it had actual track through it like the photo below.

Barnagh Tunnel on the old North Kerry railway more or less as it looks today. Highly recommend this greenway walk.

Very good DW - I was lucky enough to hurtle through both these tunnels on the weedspraying train on several occasions. On the footplate of 209 through the Barnagh tunnel was particular memorable - I have some pics somewhere which I will post if I can find.

The Mount Elliot tunnel in New Ross, Co. Wexford. about half a mile long and curved!

Its walkable now, rails are gone though. I have my own photos somewhere, but meantime here's link to this excellent site:

Sorry, the tunnels are they private property, under the care of the state or do CIE own them?

Crossed wires - I thought you meant the photographs. The Barnagh tunnel is now part of the Great Southern Trail see here: http://www.southerntrail.net/ and video here:

That would be the Kilpatrick Tunnel. (Irelands first ever railway tunnel)

Its still possible to walk through it.
