Suppose to finish at 4.30 dont leave till 5 or 5.15 sometimes.
Then again it is a small company and if I dont do it no one else will
We have let alot of people go recently and theres alot of extra work to do
I dont mind doing it really, I dont get paid but my boss shows his appreciation in other ways, recently he gave me a cheque to buy my wedding dress , its all give and take here, pretty nice place to work.

Maybe they stay late because the bus leaves 30 minutes after they finish work, while it is only a 5 minute walk to the bus stop? I would stay behind my desk too if the other choice is waiting i nthe cold/rain for 20 minutes.

Trust me, I know the people I'm referring to and there is no other excuse...as someone else mentioned once an atmosphere is created of unpaid overtime you do actually get little comments about "ducking out" at 5 on the dot, its really quite sad.

Even stranger is my manager (who has never said a word about my prefect attendance) now makes us all fill in extra hours in the reporting tool used for upper management (I religiously filled in the exact hours of my contract every week, nothing more, nothing less)...so even if I do 40 hours, I'm expected to spoof an extra few over the week so that we are seen in his words "to look busy". Pathetic approach to work anyone???

Oh yeh, he had the full range of that crap, and my bullsh1tometer was the only thing working overtime when I was there.

    Yes absolutely pathetic.
I think when someone, who was once a person, attends a management course they go through a routine of having their soul removed, then they learn to paint by numbers and at the end are given shares in any pharmaceutical company that makes paracetamol. Because they never seem to be able to relate to normality, they only understand results based on numbers and are hell bent on causing unnecessary headaches.

I start at 9 but sometimes I'm in at 8:50, I finish at 5 so I leave at around 4:55, so im technically working 5 minutes over, i have filed a letter of complaint with senior staff

Working day is 9 to 5 so staff should leave at 5. Don't mind working back very occassionly if something is very urgent but if its just normal work, it can keep until tomorrow!

If there is too much work, the employer should hire more staff or else pay people overtime. Employers need to realise that people have lives outside of work!!!!

Did this staying late lark for the first year in my job, soon you find out you end up dealing with more crap, getting no thanks or pay for it.I'm out bang on time everyday now no matter what is going on...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,810 ✭✭✭✭sbsquarepants

That's exactly it, you do it too often and it becomes expected.
There's a guy here in the office who leaves everyday 5 mins after the M.D. It's pathetic, i'll stay late once in a while if i have to, as far as i'm concerned that covers me for the occassional day off I might need, but i'll only do it when neccesary and when i have to i'll work fast and get out as early as possible, but i've seen this guy sit at his desk reading the paper, surfing the web etc, i've even seen him order in pizza on occassion and just sit there eating it! Then as soon as the M.D.'s car is gone he's off, it's cringe worthy:D

The thread is about those who do have a set finishing time, and whether they keep it though....that doesn't imply office job btw and nor does the comment you quoted.

I'm supposed to finish at 5. I stop working at 4.30 and leave at 4.55

Coming from a veteran of factory work, I leave now on time. Because I drive a long distance to/from work I'm always there early, 20-30mins. I was late once last winter because of the snow and they still docked my pay even though 99.999% I'm always early. So now I clock in on time, clock out on time and take my time.

I always believe in give and take and would have no problem staying on if I got any thanks but you wouldn't.

In one company where I worked in, engineers were expected to come in one Saturday a month (for nothing ) When I didn't I was asked why didn't I come in, I told them why not go out into the street and ask somebody to come in and work for nothing! Funnily enough I got on better with them when I showed a set of balls.

Remember guys, it's a means to an end. Work should always be secondary to your personal and family life. 40 hours a week should be enough but if you work for a nice company and you get appreciation for working extra hours, go for it but don't get ridden

I start at 9.30 and finish at 6.30.

However if there are deadlines to be met...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,428 ✭✭✭✭gimli2112

Quit time is 17.00 so I leave at 16.55. I do come in early.
If there are deadlines to be met I always think management should have hired adequate numbers of staff.

Suppose to finish at 8, leave anytime from 7-8. Anything after that is up to me and is OT if I decide to stay

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭NeuroticMonkey

How about actually working when you're all at work instead of posting on Boards?? Then you could all leave on time, maybe?

I work night shift in a factory...clock in on time, clock out on time. The only time I'm not working when I'm at work is during the three regulation 15 minute tea breaks we get per shift. Overtime is not paid, so why would I stay longer than necessary just to kiss ass? ....working hard during my working hours has kept me in favour with the boss. Simple ass.

I worked for an obnoxious twat a few years ago, who moaned at me one day because I apparently always went home when 5 o'clock arrived. The fact that the working day was 9 to 5 seemed irrelevant to the fuckwit wanker.

He was one of those people who referred to the "team", and sent people on team-building exercises. He only ever mentioned "employee" once, and that was probably by accident, the tool.

I decided to work for myself after that job, because I was putting up with none of that sh1t. The only problem is that I seem to work longer hours now.:(
I hate these c*nts. I've gotten a few emails which were sent to me and one other colleague, and the sender addressed us as "Team". Just the 2 of us... FFS.

My hours are 9-5, but I usually leave about 7pm. On occasion I stay until after 9pm, and have in the past stayed until after midnight, even until 6am on 2 occasions. If I could, honestly, I would leave at 5, but I work for a shower of pr*cks who know that I am good at my job, and constantly give me extra work because of this. I've even heard them complaining about all the people who leave the office at 5pm everyday saying that they "obviously have spare capacity" and "clearly aren't busy enough".

Much as I hate it, the work needs to be done, and it would be unprofessional to miss deadlines, or perform shoddy work. The only thing I can do now is quit this job, which I will at the end of my contract, and tell them I'd rather be unemployed than work a day longer for them.
