Why do you stay 2 hours?

Used to be the same here (not 2 hours all the time) but you just have to get up and leave at the right time. Simple as that.

You'll get **** all thanks for staying late like that.

I don't really understand why people stay later than they have to, unless the work they're doing can't wait until tomorrow. The work will still be there tomorrow, go home!

Do you get paid for your overtime?

My boss made it perfectly clear that we don't get paid for a minute after we're scheduled, so we all leave work bang on time....even if we're in the middle of something it's left till tomorrow.

There seems to be a concept around most places I've worked that to be seen to do free overtime is the best way to impress the bosses. I see people sitting after hours just browsing the net to make that impression. I just can't understand the logic, I've never done unpaid overtime (well one or two exceptions along the way to hit a deadline) and it hasn't stopped me getting promoted/pay increased etc...who taught these people that this works? Is it a personal admission that their 9-5 effort just isn't going to make any impressions!? All it does is create an pressured atmosphere for others to stay late too, browsing...to keep up the pretense. Silly buggers!

leaving on time is actually frowned upon where i work.

i just leave on time anyway and always ignore the not so suttle hints. my motto is if you cant get your work done in the time given you're not doing your job. if i have a deadline to hit on something i'm behind on, no bother. but the silly git in the top office just likes the idea of people trying to impress him - and i leave on time specifically to piss him off

A girl I work with stays late every day. Sometimes for an extra hour. Sometimes much longer. It's not approved overtime either.

She just has to finish everything that can be done before she can leave. It's on her mind all night at home if she doesnt.

Don't know how someone can live like that to be honest. I'm out the door bang on time and everything about the day is instantly forgotten about.

Maybe they stay late because the bus leaves 30 minutes after they finish work, while it is only a 5 minute walk to the bus stop? I would stay behind my desk too if the other choice is waiting i nthe cold/rain for 20 minutes.

Never worked a minute over time that wasnt paid. Current boss doesnt pay over time so i dont do over time.
Why would i work for free? Working isnt exactly an hobby of me.

Usually at like 5.15 because im always a little late in the morning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

    9am - 5pm and I 'work' those hours!
Don't stay any longer cos I don't get paid for it. I'm not one of those people who like to sit at their desk for an extra hour or two just to 'impress' senior management!
Get in, get it done, get the fook out!

When i was younger i always went above and beyond with work, not just doing the bit of upaid overtime, ive grown a little more bitter with age however - Sometmes im busy working on other things so i simply cant stay late, because i could have another 6 hours of work lined up after 5 at home or on a project im at.

However, if i need to work after 5 and it rolls on into 6 i do it. Put the head down and get the job done

Ok, so ive done some unpaid overtime - i might have to go to the doc, or take a few hours off next week and i can do so without feeling obliged to my employer.

Its a matter of give and take

    Should finish at 5.30

    Usually leave at 5.28.

I live life on the edge!

I worked for an obnoxious twat a few years ago, who moaned at me one day because I apparently always went home when 5 o'clock arrived. The fact that the working day was 9 to 5 seemed irrelevant to the fuckwit wanker.

He was one of those people who referred to the "team", and sent people on team-building exercises. He only ever mentioned "employee" once, and that was probably by accident, the tool.

I decided to work for myself after that job, because I was putting up with none of that sh1t. The only problem is that I seem to work longer hours now.:(

I finish work at 5.30 and i leave at 5.30 and not a second later.
If someone was still chatting to me or asking questions at 5.30 i would be talking to them over my shoulder.... then they would see the back of my head and then the door closing.

We work 8 til 6 everyday minimum.
And overtime ain't paid but happens all the time in the busy 'time'.

And the odd sat or Sunday too.

So 50hours min a week little or no lunch most days.

So when I can ill make sure to fook off early.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 572 ✭✭✭cowhands

Suppose to finish at 4.30 dont leave till 5 or 5.15 sometimes.
Then again it is a small company and if I dont do it no one else will
We have let alot of people go recently and theres alot of extra work to do
I dont mind doing it really, I dont get paid but my boss shows his appreciation in other ways, recently he gave me a cheque to buy my wedding dress , its all give and take here, pretty nice place to work.

Trust me, I know the people I'm referring to and there is no other excuse...as someone else mentioned once an atmosphere is created of unpaid overtime you do actually get little comments about "ducking out" at 5 on the dot, its really quite sad.

Even stranger is my manager (who has never said a word about my prefect attendance) now makes us all fill in extra hours in the reporting tool used for upper management (I religiously filled in the exact hours of my contract every week, nothing more, nothing less)...so even if I do 40 hours, I'm expected to spoof an extra few over the week so that we are seen in his words "to look busy". Pathetic approach to work anyone???

    Yes absolutely pathetic.
I think when someone, who was once a person, attends a management course they go through a routine of having their soul removed, then they learn to paint by numbers and at the end are given shares in any pharmaceutical company that makes paracetamol. Because they never seem to be able to relate to normality, they only understand results based on numbers and are hell bent on causing unnecessary headaches.

I start at 9 but sometimes I'm in at 8:50, I finish at 5 so I leave at around 4:55, so im technically working 5 minutes over, i have filed a letter of complaint with senior staff

Working day is 9 to 5 so staff should leave at 5. Don't mind working back very occassionly if something is very urgent but if its just normal work, it can keep until tomorrow!

If there is too much work, the employer should hire more staff or else pay people overtime. Employers need to realise that people have lives outside of work!!!!

Did this staying late lark for the first year in my job, soon you find out you end up dealing with more crap, getting no thanks or pay for it.I'm out bang on time everyday now no matter what is going on...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,812 ✭✭✭✭sbsquarepants

That's exactly it, you do it too often and it becomes expected.
There's a guy here in the office who leaves everyday 5 mins after the M.D. It's pathetic, i'll stay late once in a while if i have to, as far as i'm concerned that covers me for the occassional day off I might need, but i'll only do it when neccesary and when i have to i'll work fast and get out as early as possible, but i've seen this guy sit at his desk reading the paper, surfing the web etc, i've even seen him order in pizza on occassion and just sit there eating it! Then as soon as the M.D.'s car is gone he's off, it's cringe worthy:D

Coming from a veteran of factory work, I leave now on time. Because I drive a long distance to/from work I'm always there early, 20-30mins. I was late once last winter because of the snow and they still docked my pay even though 99.999% I'm always early. So now I clock in on time, clock out on time and take my time.

I always believe in give and take and would have no problem staying on if I got any thanks but you wouldn't.

In one company where I worked in, engineers were expected to come in one Saturday a month (for nothing ) When I didn't I was asked why didn't I come in, I told them why not go out into the street and ask somebody to come in and work for nothing! Funnily enough I got on better with them when I showed a set of balls.

Remember guys, it's a means to an end. Work should always be secondary to your personal and family life. 40 hours a week should be enough but if you work for a nice company and you get appreciation for working extra hours, go for it but don't get ridden
