The Irish Times-is it relevant anymore?

Just reading through todays paper and it is absolute drivel. Hard to believe this a national broadsheet...

Nobody wants to read newspapers of the standard that they once were.

Well, not people in any great numbers at least.

People sure claim too though, but if people really wanted newspapers to present news they way it once was, then that's how newspapers would be presenting it each and every day.

It's supply and demand business at the end of the day and while people may slag off the Red Tops and criticise Boards users everytime the source for their threads are articles from The Sun, The Mirror etc - the truth is, that those papers are the ones with the highest number of sales for the very reason that they are giving people what they want.

I believe the vast majority of people are news snobs online and tabloid purchasers off it.

It's the only national paper I can bear to read these days. I don't always agree with it but the writing and reporting is usually at least factually accurate and not sensationalist. I understand why people read some of the tabloids for the sport though.

The Indo is a tabloid effectively at this stage, it's half sports and entertainment, at least the times maintains some thorough reporting of national issues. And even the sports journalists in the Indo aren't a patch on the Times

It's the only good paper.. And I came to that conclusion myself after reading both in work. Indo is ok at times but since I grew out of tabloids when I was 18, i'm not too keen on it.

I find it way more interesting to read the likes of alternet when i'm online.

The Indo is by far the best newspaper, good compromise between the boredom of the times and the drivel of the tabloids.

The Indo is ok for light reading but I think the IT is the better newspaper.
The standards are slipping on their website though (I haven't read it in print for a long time so I don't know about that part) - there are a fair amount of typos and bad spelling/grammar.

The Indo has always been a tabloid paper, maybe one of the classier ones, but a rag none the less . . Because its easy and enjoyable to read doesnt make many of its stories half baked.. They have to issue apologies for inaccurate stories quite regularly for a supposed "upstanding paper". Their editors generally have tabloid principles (none). I dont buy any newspapers (as they are all full of sh*t jornalism) but the one I would trust the most is the Irish Times.

I enjoy reading the rags for the colorful crap they come up with, I consider that entertainment not in anyway educating (which is why we have so many miseducated people in Ireland who trust the crap they read in papers!). . While the Irish Times isnt always immune from "massaging the truth", they are certainly the more balanced & factual accurate of any paper in Ireland, prob why some people find them boring.

Exactly. The Irish Times will stick to the facts and not sensationalise. Tabloids ( and I include the Independent in that ) are there to entertain, not report the news.

Newspapers in general are becoming more and more less relevant to how people live their lives these days.

The Irish Times is currently the only actual weekday newspaper on sale in this country (with the possible exception of the Examiner as I've never read it). The others are wastes of newsprint, with anything from INM being at the top of that list.

The Irish Times is just a big printed copy of the Dail report. It depends on what you look for from a Newspaper. If you just want to read verbatim what is going on with no independant analysis getting in the way, then the Irish Times does it's job well.

If, on the other hand you'd like to see some kind of rational and inciteful thought alongside the report, then buy The Guardian 'cause you won't get it in any Irish paper.

AH is still the only place I have ever heard the Independent described as a tabloid.

Havent touched it since that gob****e Stephen Collins called for the govt to cancel the results of Lisbon 1 and push the treaty through anyway! Who needs democracy anyway..

As for the Indo its not a newspaper at all.

The state of the media in this country is woeful. Its mainly opinion with little or no investigative journalism. I believe this to be the main reason we keep voting idiots from FF back in hence why the country is in such a state.

Prob because most people dont actually know the differance between journalism to entertain and journalism to inform . .

All news media's have their agenda's. Fox news is the best example. .Ever watch it during an election in the U.S. ? Its unashamadly bias, doesnt even try to cover it up. Hilarious stuff about democrats. . Its not differant for rag tag papers. . They ALL have their agenda's , but the rags love to make insinuations, innuendo's and make fantasy more relevant to their story then fact. . Also, they dont usually backup "opinions" with credible evidence, they use their prejudices on certain topics to encourage people to follow suit. . They also like to say things that they think the majority of the public will want to read . .

Quit reading the papers long ago. Must say it's scary when I see 80% of Luas commuters reading the articles from the Metro every single morning. Not saying it would be any better if the were reading The Irish Times but just the thoughts of everybody being fed the same thing.

Back when Gaybo presented the Late Late, and Kenny, had Kenny live, I always used to say The Times was the late late, and the Indo was Kenny Live, and the Sunday editions even more so.

Now that clown is ru(i)nning the late late, and Kenny is doing the frontline, I cant use the same analogy.

The Irish Times is the only paper I can bear to read. If I wanted to read half the stuff in the tabloids I'd just buy a copy of Heat or OK.

I don't I've ever reached the end of a Fintan O'Toole article, or John Waters, or Tom Humphries.
