Could females have more raw brainpower than males on average? Mod warn #34

In the past 2years Ive been in a car with 3 separate women who had trouble reversing, as in they didn't know whether to turn the wheel right or left when reversing into a spot.

Talking to others about this it seems to be a common problem with females :eek:.

The above is only one reason why I believe women do not have 'more raw brainpower' than men.

Why would you bias your opinion by using Physics as an example? Why not bias it (the other direction) by using A1s and A2s in Mathematics?

Far more boys play chess competitively than girls. Statistically, they are far more likely to form the elite. Study. In Germany, male chess players outnumber female players by 16:1.

In short, opportunity makes a huge difference.

A very crucial point from that study is this:

Nevertheless, about 96% of the actual difference between genders could be explained by the statistical fact that the extreme values from a large sample are likely to be larger than those from a small one.

My OH (male) played chess competitively in secondary (all boys) he used win lots too, we never had the opportunity to play in ours (mixed sex secondary) however i played (and won) frequently at home.

i have yet to beat my OH.

although he was tested intellectually and he was in the top 4 in Ireland!

however he would consider me to be on a par intellectually and educationally he underperformed as much as i did in the LC...In fact i did a better leaving cert.

both of us are rubbish at languages both of us excel within mathematics/Science/computers...etc

in non-educational environments e.g caring for our child he is as skilled if not more than me at Tasks considered 'Female' dominant where i would be as skilled as him in 'male' dominated tasks...

in my opinion men and women are 50-50 brain power wise with both sexes being matched at the higher and lower intelligence scale!

its some stupid intelligence test they do that i mysteriously haven't heard of....although i vaguely remember being set one of those aptitude tests in 2nd year.

but it doesn't make a difference to me i still beat him at scrabble!

Once again, I KNOW that females study a lot more overall, HOWEVER that doesn't account for them outperforming boys almost everywhere.

3. Girls are known to be better at reading than males, at every level, not just boys who hate reading.

Males can certainly get more "hardcore" about subjects than females. If women were really as good in this way then you'd have some of them breaking through even in the worst times of repression, perhaps pretending they were men initially or something like that.

2. I'm doing a degree now where there's quite a lot of maths and physics. Most of the people on the course are male. When I was in school, most of the people in the higher math and higher physics were male and I can distinctly remember that the people with the highest marks in the class were male in both subject.

Very true, there only one famous female scientist that I've heard of (apart from Marie Curie), her name is Lisa Randall and she's a theoretical physicist.

At the very very top of the leaving cert scale where you have students getting 8 or 9 A!'s. Normally there is only one or 2 each year.

Which gender gets this the most??

I don't actually know but it would be a good yardstick because only those that are applying themselves 100% will achieve this.... therefore the old excuse that boys study less etc shouldn't matter.

Ok here's my view: men aren't generally more intelligent than women but the type of intelligence they have that are generally better than women (spatial/mathematical) is better valued in the current world view.

Yes, but the simple fact is that MORE girls apply themselves 100%, so we should expect more female students achieving the gaudy 8 or 9 A1's.

I know a girl who got 7 A1s, she could have probably gotten 9 if she had really wanted to.

If I were super smart I would just go for 7 like everyone else. Getting 9 A1s is really just taking the piss. :rolleyes:

Well good luck when you finally do sit your leaving cert. Judging by the juvenile content of your posts I'd guess its a few years off yet, so you've plenty of time to prepare and get 600 points.
