Would you eat meat if you had to kill it?

Looking over a number of threads I was just wondering, how many of you would eat meat if you had to kill it first?

Personally I would defiantly be prepared to kill a cow, lamb, pig or chicken or any other animal that I eat. I eat meat and so don’t have any moral objection to a animal dieing for me to do so. I’m not saying I would enjoy killing anything but I see it as a natural thing.

I have friends who I have spoken to about this and despite the fact they eat meat they seemed discussed that I could kill something. They said they couldn’t bring themselves to do it. While I understand their reluctance I don’t understand how they can have a moral objection to killing an animal but not to eating its meat?

Currently I have only ever killed fish that I have caught to eat but I 100% believe that I would be able to kill any other animal that I currently eat.

I'd hate to think that every time I were to eat pussy, that I would have to kill a cat.

    I don't see why not.

Don't mean to be bad, but cows and pigs and chickens aren't exactly the cutest of animals and I don't see them really serving a purpose (unless we end up living in a Mad Max Thunderdome world) besides being food for us.
We breed them to eat them, so I wouldn't really have a problem killing them.
I'd try to be as humane as possible though.

I think you'd be a bit hypocritical not to.

Now it wouldn't be a nice experience. I live on a farm and I have reared lambs by hand that then went to the factory and it's never nice being there with the smell and the bones in skips outside. But if you eat meat it is part of the process.

I do think however that there is a responsability to ensure that it is quick and painless and that the animals have a comfortable and nurtured life beforehand.

That is why I have no time for battery farms

Yes. Indeed, one of my ambitions is to source and supply all the meat I consume through ethical hunting and fishing. There is nothing to compare with wild rabbit, pheasant or venison, sea trout or salmon, so supplying my own would ensure I never feel bored and always eat the finest food there is.

If it weren't for battery farms, then we wouldn't have the Duracell bunny.

Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.

I don't know if I'd be able to kill anything other than fish and even then I can't prepare it for cooking so..
Life or death though,I'd kill fcuking anything to eat,has to be done.
I have eaten food hunted and killed by other people though, just couldn't do it myself unless it was absolutely necessary.

yes i would and i would even go as far as to say it would taste even better if you hunted and killed the animal yourself, much like any fish i have eaten that i have caught tasted way better than any fish i ever bought!

if the situation was if i had to, then yes and i see little wrong with it.
However if its just out of the blue, meh, why bother when i can grab meat from the nearest supermarket.

Edit: This said i often go out crabbing and have a tasty meal afterwards

Animals that I've killed to eat have been chickens, a wild boar & some lobsters.

I've also killed a cat, a rat & a hedgehog, but that's only coz I couldn't avoid them when I was driving. The hedgehog was the only one that didn't die instantly & I had nothing in the car to kill it with properly to put it out of it's misery.

So I ran over it again.

Planning a possible trip to either France or Germany to hunt wild boar in about a year and a half. Where did you encounter yours?

I'll only eat the meat I would hunt and kill but killing's of the agenda around here, ergo no meat.
Luckily there is a good supply of vegetables, cereals, beans and pulses, vitamins and minerals available so meat free is easy.

In Asturias in the north coast of Spain. Tasty bugger he was too!

Working on a recipe over the next few months for a spicy tomato venison and wild boar pork belly stew to keep the winter at bay. Hoping to find a few friends taking a trip east for some shooting to scab meat off. Should be a good one for the job. Will be travelling myself, probably around the new year of 2012 to do it.

I would kill any animal that I would eat.
For me, it's not so much the prospect of killing it but the cleaning out that would be the big no-no. If somebody gave me a gun and told me to go out and shoot a cow in the head I could do it no problem any day, however the prospect of slicing up the cow and dealing with the smell, sh*t, bile, stomach, lungs, etc is enough make me vomit repetitively. I'm handy enough gutting and filleting a fish, and I'm sure I'd have no problem with a chicken or turkey, but that's where I'd draw the line.

It's unpleasant work, but it's a necessity. Never met anyone who enjoyed being elbow deep in a deer. Met a lot of people who loved venison steaks though, so somebody's got to do it! ;)

    Simple answer yes.
The list of animals I would kill to eat are.
    Turkeys
    Chickens
    Cows
    Sheep
    Rabbits
    Goats
    Horsies
    Pigs.
    Fish.
If I was absolutely starving then I would have to include the following
    Dog
    Cat
    Pidgeon.

Pheasant, duck, pigeon, wabbit. Ive killed and eaten. And have no prob doing it either. Roast pheasant is smashing.

I don't eat fish but enjoy fishing more than shooting. My girlfriends house are big fish eaters so I'll gradually fill the deep freeze with fish over the summer and that should last the winter until the fishing picks up again next spring. The fish that I catch are sustainably caught with the small ones put back alive instead of the dead like the trawlers do.

I probably couldn't kill something now. Not because I'm disgusted but because of my upbringing (as in grew up in the suburbs). I'm sure if there was no other option I'd eventually learn. But while there's local butchers I won't be doing it.
