Looking to joina cycling club in Meath. Would be new to cycling (well 10 years since i use to cycled to college in Athlone). I haven't a bike yet but hope to purchase soon. (any second hand ones going for sale i would be interested. I'm 5ft 9")

Anyway just wondering what the clubs are like and what level of fitness would you need to keep up with the ordinary rider on a typical route.

Also wondering if any clubs would have a fitness programme set up for people in order to improve fitness and pace.

    Kenneth:)

re clubs, a quick search of the cycling ireland website should direct you.
Pace is probably 25kph ish, at least in the winter. The season ends in august and assume club rides will start in october so all should start from the same base. Would advise just keeping fit now, 2 cycles a week, 2hrs each and maybe some running/swimming as well

I was a member of Navan Road Club a couple of years ago, and I'd recommend it, they go out on Sundays at 10:30 from the Balreask Arms (or whatever it's called now) and the pace is fairly gentle, so if you are just getting back into cycling you should be fine. There aren't too many active senior members doing racing or longer sportives (although they did put a team into the race round Ireland last year).

The only reason I haven't gone back is laziness on a Sunday morning, and the fact I'm an antisocial weirdo who quite likes training alone :)

Kilmessan has The Skane Wheelers Cycling Club. We have a spin out every Sunday morning at 9am leaving the church car park
