No, unlike the previous talk of International flights on the part of Ryanair which just came to nothing, and the talk of removing the tray tables from the specs of newly built planes....and using a sticker for the passenger information leaflet as opposed to handing out a card....this idea seems to take the ultimate biscuit.

Several sources are reporting that Ryanair, in a bid to offer competitive prices and get more people on the plane, are offering you the chance to stand on a flight....that's right, don't bother sitting, just stand

    http://theairlineblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/ryanair-plans-standing-seats.html

I actually like this idea, because I'm 6"6, and if I don't get the bulkhead seats then standing on the plane might be an ideal solution for a shorter journey like those to Manchester and Newcastle. I sometimes dread the idea of getting on Ryanair plane in case it draws adverse attention to myself because of where I can't sit comfortably

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/5753477/Ryanair-to-make-passengers-stand.html

With leg room not being an issue, and most passengers paying a little extra for the pleasure of sitting down (or just paying a little more then those standing) it might also eradicate the need for the stupid "let's all queue at the boarding gate" game that happens everytime a Ryanair flight is about to take off

This is no doubt going to annoy some people, who will say that offering people the choice to stand, is discrimination against those who are not as mobile as the rest. Charging people extra for the pleasure of sitting down also seems a bit extreme. But, for me, I would welcome the idea.

    What about you?

I still think that eventually they will charge people for not using the toilet

They'll have only one toilet on the plane and they won't let you take anything in with you.

Anyone who cant put at least 100g of sh1t or piss into the bowl will have to pay an extra 10e. Of course that is on top of the 2e you will have to pay to get into the toilet in the first place.

There are serious safety implications having people standing on a flight during turbulence, or bumpy landings and take offs. Don't see this happening at all really.

    MOL

All I know is, I won't be booking a standing seat.
On the other hand, I'd finally have the leg room I need!
Next step is to basically turn Ryanair flights into something akin to the slave ships crossing to America. Just stack us all in a row, and away we go.
Only one reason I travel with Ryanair: the price. I certainly don't go for the snobby air hosts/hostesses, squashy seats, €1 loo roll and/or rubbery chicken sandwiches. (If, which I complain about, I may get arrested, ooh er!)

    Hurray, free advertising.

Give that executive in Ryanair who came up with this a bonus, they deserve it

Ryanair could do more to offer competitive prices before going down the wacky route. I booked a flight with them recently and the price quoted jumped by a tenner in between the quote and the paying. I seemed to be charged a fiver each way for the chance to actually buy the flight. It'd be like a guy in the local shop telling you that a pound of butter is €2 but it's €2.50 if you want to actually buy it.

They have cut out all these apparent overheads by getting rid of the middleman but are pocketing these 'administration costs' themselves instead.

Leaving aside completely this 'standing up on flights' story which I know nothing about I'm beginning to think that they have squeezed everything so much that they are no having to charge for silly stuff to keep their massive profits up.

Total liquid immersion ala The Abyss is O'Leary's ultimate dream I imagine. You can really pack 'em in then.

It's very well known that Ryanair charge between €5 and €10 for paying by laser or credit card, and if you want to get around it then all you have to do is pick up a pre-paid mastercard and use that to pay.

Basically a seating support system - back & head rest & form of seatbelt in place for a standing person.

Its just a normal seat except you pay cheaper and have to stand on it, if the cabin crew see you sitting in your "standing" seat they shoot you.

seat : a space reserved for sitting (as in a theater or on a train or airplane)
    sitting : seated: (of persons) having the torso erect and legs bent with the body supported on the buttocks;
standing : (of persons) on the feet; having the torso in an erect position supported by straight legs; "standing room only"

I'm sooooo sick of Ryanair bashing!! The plan with standing was to apply on flights of an hour or less, where you would NOT be asked to pay.You would'nt be booking a 'standing seat'. They asked 'If you could travel free, would you stand'? For an hour?...Hell ya!!

No the plan was to release something outrageous to get media/internet coverage which goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on

    maximum coverage for no money

Really?? I'll agree to differ there. Ive been trotting off around Europe for next to nothing for the last 18 months. If they have to charge 10euro to the government on top of a 5euro flight..its hardly a sin. If people used the site properly..free flights or very very nearly free are available all the time.

I really dont get it..Why moan about the only cheap airline in the country?
Use the site PROPERLY to avail of free or very cheap flights! Whats the problem? If you decide to pay for prioity boarding,a 2 ton suitcase etc...tough. You'll pay for those on other airlines too. Aer Lingus charge 12 euro to book a seat and charge for excess baggage. AND their planes are filthy with staff who look likethey enjoy sucking lemons.

And now they've got us talking about RyanAir yet again.

Premier Division branding and marketing in action.
At this point, Ryanair kicks in with its PR campaign. O’Leary himself usually goes onto the front foot and makes even more incendiary claims: Ryanair will make people pay for toilets; there will be tickets for standing room only on flights; fat people will have to pay more; and everyone flying business class will get free sexual favours. All of it is nonsense, of course.

Few of the claims that Ryanair has made over the years are ever likely to come to pass. But that’s not the point. A £25,000 ad campaign has suddenly become a million-pound piece of brand strategy. Because make no mistake, Ryanair’s continued success is as much the result of building one of Europe’s most distinctive brands as it is low fares. The airline itself might publicly deny any such emphasis on branding - but the greatest trick the devil ever played was making you believe he didn’t exist in the first place.

I often wonder if anyone who has a comment to make, has an opinion of their own?? What is it that bugs you all so much? Good old Irish begrugary at its best it seems to me.
