Ryanair Contemplate Standing Seats

I know it's the Daily Mail.. but..

    http://bit.ly/dpu1c7
Ryanair plans to revolutionise air travel by introducing flights where passengers stand up for as little as £4 per ticket.

The budget airline wants to charge travellers for using the toilet in order to 'change passenger behaviour' and fund the cheap standing tickets.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary said safety testing for 'vertical seating' will take place next year, at which point the airline will also introduce a fee of £1 to use the lavatory.

The plan is to remove the back ten rows of seats from the carrier's 250 planes and replace them with 15 rows of vertical seats. Two toilets at the back could also be removed to free up even more space.

Between 40 and 50 extra passengers will be able to travel on each flight if the plan gets the go ahead, enabling Ryanair to cut its own costs.

The revenue generated from charging passengers to use the toilet would pay for the new vertical seating, Mr O'Leary told television programme How To Beat The Budget Airlines, which airs on ITV1 tonight.

He added: 'The other change we’ve been looking at is taking out the last ten rows of seats so we will have 15 rows of standing area in the equivalent of ten rows of seats.'

In the new vertical seats, passengers will still be restrained with a seat belt which will go over the shoulder, and will adhere to all current safety regulations which apply to normal aircraft seating, Ryanair said.

Wasn't this reported ages ago. like six months or something?

nice to see the daily fail keeping up with cutting edge journalism.

That article is just Ryanair trying to get free publicity, they do it better then anyone and well done to them

And by starting this thread OP, you're doing exactly what they wanted, to get people talking about them and free advertising

How long before Ryanair take these ideas to their natural conclusion?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,385 ✭✭✭Preset No.3

It was, and it was dismissed six months ago. Ryanair can't remove toilets, something to do with minimum numbers of toilets per 50 passengers!

The standing thing would never be approved by the FAA or CAA!

But once again, micko saves a few quid by getting all if us to talk about.....Ryanair! Clever marketing!

Oh well I've been suckered into their evil web of 'some gobshyte is gonna put this on boards!!'

Knew the toilets thing had gone around - but not the 'fly standing up' idea.

    Hangs head in shame..

And thanks Dr B for fixing my post..

I'm gonna go off now and cancel my interweb... cos I don't know how to use it..

Yeah, its not going to happen. Too dangerous.

That said, isnt it interesting that people who complain about Ryanair have less to say about the actual forms of transport where people do have to stand - sometimes for hours - despite paying for a seat.

Trains, I am looking at you.

I know.. It's absolutely brilliant isn't it. They lower their costs forcing other airlines to do the same so everyone in Europe can travel for less no matter what airline they choose.

Or maybe I should be a pathetic sheep and slag of a man and service which no one is forced to use but has benefited us all..

If you've booked a seat and someone's sitting in it you're entitled to kick them out of it. If you haven't specifically booked a seat then they'd probably claim that the ticket is just for 'carriage'.

As for Ryanair, that plan'll never get off the ground. It's a H&S nightmare.

Although I'd love to see them try it and watch them get sued when people fall over on take of and landing.

Don't blame the OP, blame the Daily Mail.

They put up this article on their website today, even if it is old news

This is old. It must have been a slow day at the Daily Fail offices.

No illegal immigrant Muslim single parents threatening the royal family that day . . .

Totally daft, not going to happen due to safety regulations alone.
Every time this crops up, Ryanair are laughting at the free publicy.

Wow this is amazing journalism even for the daily mail. Not only is this old news but it is also just an old publicity stunt because standing in an airplane won't be happening because of safety reasons.

The next step is no toilets at all and nappies for all!

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article719124.ece
Adult nappy sales are soaring — up by 50 per cent in some parts of southern China — as migrant workers prepare for 30-hour train journeys with no chance of a trip to the lavatory.

Just imagine greeting your relatives after such a journey.

Damn straight. I can never figure out the animosity towards Ryanair. I've even gotten a refund from them in the past due to a flight I had to cancel and when I was living in Holland flew 12 of my mates out for a weekend for the grand total of €0.12.

    RTFT&C & STFU. LOL OMG ESB!!one!

Its not daft and it's done in China already.

Alternatively they could do lying down, 3-4 bunks high :D
As for the toilets, there's no real need to ever have to use them on a flight less than 3-4 hours anyway so good luck to them with that, its a good idea

It'd surely be like one of those snow globe things, just with people? Like how well secured can you be while standing up?

    Merged.

People wont be able to physically fit standing, theres not enough head room with the overhead compartments and the curvature of the fuselage

I once asked at the Ryanair check-in desk if I could travel in the baggage hold. I figured it would be cheaper if I didn't use up a seat.

So, she went to ask her supervisor who quickly said yes, but that I'd have to pay a €100 'person handling' fee & €10 per kilogram.

LOl i love michael, some of the stuff he comes out with............................. he just does'nt give a crap!.
Maybe he can strap a few more to the wing ,wearing goggles.
Ryanair is planning to run flights where passengers stand during the journey at a cost of just €5 per ticket.
Michael O'Leary, the airline's chief executive, set out proposals that also include charging customers to use the loo.
A standing area with "vertical seats" will be introduced at the back of its fleet of 250 planes.
Don't think he has a leg to stand on myself.:D

Now is this 5 euro; or is this 5 euro + five euro credit card + 22 euro taxes?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,419 ✭✭✭allanb49

I think its a new ryan air marketing ploy, keep posting random stuff every day one of the newspaper "reporters" will see it and publish it

Therefore meaning less money is being spent on the marketing department and ryanair makes more money on spending less :pac:

No because they are bringing in a system were you strap yourself in standing so you won't fall, plus theres wee fold out seats (like on the tube), so really your paying cheap for another seat.:P
