Ooh that's a really good one, and a really achievable training programme as well-thanks a million for your help peanut head!! That's not too bad to try & stick to. What do you do for your cross training?

If you're that far ahead, I bet you'll be great come the half marathon:)

Well no, I'm about 8 weeks trying to get to week 6!!

But I'm going to try anyway.

For my cross I either do a light jog, swim or cross trainer. Measure in lengths rather than miles in swimming. But I haven't really been doing the cross. Going to do my wed's cross today and stretching tomorrow as its better with my timetable so will be using cross trainer at home tonight.

OMG,,, I'm just back from a run it was terrible!!! I'm just having an off day,,, ran 6.5km and I took about 5 stops along the way,, my calves just felt like cement blocks. It is so disappointing as Friday after work in did 10km in about 1:04mins and felt really good.
My diet over the weekend was pretty horrendous and I'm going to blame it on that... so lesson learned!!
I have a planned 10km with friends on Wednesday,, hopefully I will see an improvement!!!!

That's the main thing though once you're trying, it's all about mental fitness as well (so I've been told!) your mind always gives up way quicker than your body does, and imagine the achievement you're (we're) going to feel when we cross that finish line.

Swim sounds good, I want to get into cycling as well. Sure we won't know ourselves come September!!

Couldnt get out for my jog as my OH wasnt free to mind my son so I went for a cycle with my son and did some strength at home myself. Found this article on runnersworld so did some of these cores.

Phew, having never done pilates or yoga I found them tough, esp the plank and the side plank but if it helps my core strength and abs Ill give it a go. Apparently crunches arent that good (which is what ive been incorporating in my strength).

Hi all..v tough run this evening...was tired...v cranky  (bad day in the office...) 6.5km in 42mins but really struggled..just kept telling myself it was way shorter than last Saturday and that kept me going...going to bed early! think sleep is a factor too in how you feel and I havent been getting enough.
Does anyone else find it tougher when you are tired?

felt really good on one of my 8 mile runs tonight after a complete soaking and went for it, thought I had the HM licked..turned out it was 12.3 miles in 2:13:40 according to runningmap.com, misjudged it completely. To say I'm pissed off slightly is putting it mildly.

And I've got Ire in the strangest places!!

aw crap, i hate when that happens. But in all fairness you were only a mile off so you knnow you have it in you to finish it. Well done, 12.3 miles is no mean feat. I envy you!

There'll be no run this eve either, torrential rain promised, and I loathe running in heavy rain.

Means Ill have to run three days in a row this week unfortunately, Thursday through Sat and then going to take a break until Tuesday as Im off next week and going away at weekend. Have to find the motivation now!! :)

Last night I went for a run with my brother in law to be - who has a bit more pace then myself and managed to do 10km in 58min.40sec!! Delighted,, my PB before this was 1hr.04min.... it was great having him there for the extra push and motivation. He was determined to get me to do it sub 60mins!!!
My legs were so tired last night that I actually found it hard to sleep,, They feel fine now,, but think I'll rest up for a couple of days!! :D:D

Ok so no running for at least 3 weeks and that could fill out to 6 so if i can i'll have to shift my focus to the Galway half on Oct 2 if i can sort out work that weekend.

I got some exerices and have to focus on cycling, cross trainer and learning to swim.

Back in 2 weeks to look at it again.

Ah well i think i'll get drunk tonight and do a 10 mile cycle tomorrow.

Sorry to hear it elvis :(
Take a look at this thread, there might be some races for you, like the half in Waterford in December?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

Ray that one in Waterford looks perfect becauce i'm working the night before & after Galway and i like running in cold weather as well !!!

As Ray said, it sounds like Waterford would be perfect for you in terms of having a decent bit of time to recover beforehand. Might be worthwhile too dropping ULStudent on here a PM, he's had similar injury problems (achilles tendonosis) and a lengthy absence too but is just getting back to running now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

Yeah Waterford looks like it will be my focus now and something to keep running up to crimbo and then set a new target after that.

It will also be the 1st anniv of my 1st road race last December:D

Oh and if your looking for a physio Sports Med Ireland get a major thumbs up from me !!!!!!!

    Elvis, speedy recovery mate!!!!

My own training has come on leaps and bounds. I went out to do my usual 5km and had a bit of a Forest Gump moment and ended up running 16km!!!
It's on a very hilly route and although I did take a few stops for a couple of seconds every few km,, I'm delighted to have done it!!!! :D:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 765 ✭✭✭yungwan

    Sorry to hear that Elvis.

Its pity but hopefully your recovery is fast you're back before you know it!

Block your ears now as I ament trying to rub it in.....

Got my four miler done this evening thankfully.
Was actually really comfortable and enjoyed it. :)

havent done anything this week. Nothing. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭iceage

Chin up Elvis. You'll be back at it. This must be catching.. a mate of mine who is doing the Spar Spartan challenge (16 week program to run the DCM, which in my mind is total madness) is in trouble he has bunched two muscles in his lower right shin/ankle area and has had his first visit to Physio today.

he wasn't given a time frame of non running but I imagine it could work out to be weeks. hes is not a very happy bunny at all. I spoke with him today, he was nearly in tears. I reckon it was too much, too soon and way too fast. But what do I know I'm just a fun jogger.

DCM in 16 weeks literally from scratch. Is it possible?

It has been done plenty of times, but it's not recommended. In my opinion it poses a crazy injury risk and the risk of putting yourself off running entirely after the marathon.

I'm sure there are candidates that are able to attempt and complete said 16 week challenge but this doesn't apply to all. I totally agree with you rainbow kirby that the risks of injury are definately heightened.

Without a doubt my mate will run the DCM, wild horses won't stop him and mentally, hes already run it! But as a fun jogger if I might be so bold, a word of advice to all here myself included. Listen to your body, it will tell you what you can and cannot do.

As to the whole 16 week program thing. In my head...16 weeks to a 10K. no bother. Or 16 weeks to a HM possibly if all is going well and you haven't done yourself a mischief. 16 weeks to a full 26 odd mile Marathon is asking for trouble. this is of course just my opinion.

I'm no professional or a proper runner as such and I expect a bit of flak from said quarters.

Apologies for going WAY off topic.
