Who said I was running in the race?

I'm going to the park to run 5 miles. Actually i'm planning on running it twice. (As I've done several satursday/sundays recently). I'm hoping that by the time I get there the race will be well and truely over , except maybe for a few walkers and if I can avoid them and the race I will.

and I don't need to be educated on volunteering either as I have a bit of experience of doing that too.

I suggest some people get their 2nd cup of coffee or whatever it is that they need to chill out.

56 minutes I think. Not overly impressed to be honest, but I ran it all except for the two small inclines. My training hadn't got that far, lol.

Not majorly disappointed either though. Thing is, I think my power walk is faster than my jog, because last year I did it in like 59:50 or something - JUST under the hour, but I walked most of it.

What awful weather at the end !!!

Hi all just back from my 5 miles in the park...46 minutes - REALLY pleased with that :D:D:D- although I found the 2.5 - 4 miles stretch hard and then once I got to 4m my legs just found a new energy again. Well done to everyone who too part!! stuck to the sofa now for a while!! rain was horrid...

possibly silly question - is it the chip time or the finsh time that counts?

    Chip time.
Finish time is the time the clock was showing when you crossed the finish line. But that clock started before you crossed the start line.
Chip time is how long it took you to get from start to finish.

Have to say, I'm a little bit worried about the amount of work that lies ahead of me if I want to achieve the ten miler.

Am having thoughts of dropping from the half already!! Help!!

It'll be tough, but we'll get there. It seems daunting to me too after today but my other half said something to me today that gave me comfort - look at todays race as your fast one, we dont have to go the same pace for the 10 mile, we can take it slower, its a big distance for those of us who are new to running and at the moment we can just focus on finishing, we can worry about doing it fast next year:D!

I was really pleased with myself today - chip time was 49:38, alot faster than I had hoped for. Plus I really, really, really enjoyed myself (obviously the enjoyment was for the parts that I wasnt feeling tortured, exhausted and completely weary - but for the other bits, like the start, the downhill and the finish it was great!:p)

anyway, well done us. Onwards and Upwards.

Well done!! Would have been over the moon with sub 50 but hey, I wasn't a million miles out and I'm not making excuses or anything but I didn't eat enough this morning and didn't stretch and I was feeling the effects of both at around 2.5 miles. I know I could have done better but I'm delighted really.

Last year I did it in 59mins and I walked it mostly with small bursts of running, never more than 5mins.

Didn't do any training all year because of colaiste, only got back into it in June, and this time not only was I a fair bit faster, but bar the 2 inclines I jogged it all. Was wrecked but very proud of myself, lol, felt a tear coming to my eye as I approached the end!!

well done you guys - you done so well. i am such a slow jogger I would be stoked if i got a sub 60 mins at this point so well done!

I have only done a 10k (6.5 miles) and the feeling of achievement i felt after it was amazing and so worth the training for it!

I cannot wait to do the half in some ways (apart from the fact I cant imagine actually running 13 miles) - it will be some (personal) achievement.

I wish I could do all the adidas series in prep like ye can, but ill have to go it alone unfort....

Not a good day at the office and its all of my own doing.

Eat nothing but crap all week ( including steak and chips at 10 last night ), no training at all this week and a finish time today of 45 min............i hang my head in shame and reading the result is punishment enough without then finding out that it wasn't even 5 miles at all:(

10KM next sunday in Park West and i'm going for 56 min and if i don't i'm jumping in the canal !

(rant over until tomorrow off to bed after a very very very long day )

Remember, everyone goes slower in a 10 mile race than in a 5 miler. Nobody can run at the same pace for twice the distance. Everyone runs about 10% slower (roughly), so if you were running ten minute miles yesterday, it would be perfectly reasonable to run 11 minute miles next month.

OMG!!! PH you are soo reading my mind...I spent half of yesterday afternoon thing about this..anyway I have decided..to stop thinking about it! I think tipsy is also right too to say we will probably all have to slow down a bit..
It funny I think I am more worried about the 10 miler than the HM..I know that sounds wierd but I reckon the HM is further away and thats what I am training towards and the 10 miler is coming up too soon in my training schedule...also it looks like the 10m has a more hilly course than the HM..I have also decided I am not going to set myself a finishing time goal for the HM...my goal will be to finish...and that will be it. I think we shoudl forget about the HM for now..on our traing programmes we oare only at weeks 4 -6ish I think and only 1/2 through - if we are only 1/2 way though we cant be ready yet! GO US!! :o:o

Before you run Amy distance fast you must be able to run it slow. Speedwill come with time and practice.

Is your aim to run 10 miles on Aug 21 or run 10 miles in a specific time ???? You must do the 1st before you do the second.

Remember you aim is the half marathon and these races are stepping stones and let Rouget the buzz of a race.

Yesterday was a kick in the bum for me as I didn't respect proper race preparation and I paid for it. Now without that race I wouldn't have learned that lesson and it will make me treat even the smallest race with respect now.

Your aim now that the 1st stepping stone is done is to increase your miles slowly, you've done 5 and now you look at 6 and then 7 and before long you'll have done the magic double digit and the smile when you do that is worth all the pain, sweat and time on the feet !

Just take a day off, chill and start it all again Monday !

    Thats my aim.

I did very well yesterday and I'm proud of myself. It is the fittest I have ever been that is for sure.

I'm now aiming to take on week 5 of the HH training plan and take it on very seriously. I have been taking the running seriously, but not the strength and cross, or the diet really.

I'm sitting in all evening, preparing my meals and classes for the whole week so that no matter how busy I am I can swing by the park for my run no problem.

I'm not afraid of the 10 miler anymore, just have to use the next 4 weeks very wisely!

Peanuthead, you will be fine. Stick with the plan and be consistent and the 10 mile in the park will be no problem for you. :)

Like yourself peanuthead I have been good with the running, not so good with the cross-training. Apart from my weekly pilates class I haven't done any cross training in 3 weeks I think. In terms of time & energy I was just finding it too much, esp with the kids off school. Just how important is it??

Diet was going well, in fact I even managed to lose 2lbs last week :) but the 2 days of overeating (family get together meal on Friday and post--race piggery -> fry up for lunch, take-away for dinner, beers and ice-cream) and the 2 lbs + are back on  Maybe as the mileage increases those 5lbs I'd like to lose will just melt away :pac: It's hard to get the balance right - having enough energy to train but eating (little) enough to lose.

Definitely agree with all Elvis has said. Build up the distances gradually and you will get there fine. It's not like you are going to go out and run 10 or 13 miles without any training under your belt. If you follow the training plans and build up gradually and you will be fine.

And also agree with not going too fast. You will know from your LSRs what pace you can keep up over distance, so be disciplined to stay at that pace in the early stages. It can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of the day and go out too fast. If you're feeling strong later in the race you can always pick up the pace a bit.

@Dolly - I find it hard to get the cross training in as well. I think you will be fine without it though. You're training for a running race, so the most important part is to get the running in, particularly your LSR each week. Remember, that counts not just towards fitness, but also to get your legs used to the pounding they will take on race day.

    6 miler done
It was tough as my stomach was off again and had to jump into a bush! lol Ive heard it happens!

I cant believe im going into week 6! Half way there :D

MAd to think little old me jogged 14 miles this week! Wowza!

My cross is gone out the window the last fortnight too. I agree, runs are more nb especially the long run. But hopefully this week I will get out for a cycle - if the rain effs off!

I find it hard to eat enough. Its hard to change my mindset and allow myself more food. Have to learn to increase it as my milage increases. Loving my new toned body though!!! Its a great motivater! :D

I've noticed a little difference in the tummy alright, but I've actually gained weight :(

Gym instructor says not to worry but have to say I was very disappointed on those scales. Found myself staying on them hoping they were going to go down!!!! lol :(:(

Haha I know I have actually gained weight too and I used to be so annoyed about it. Now I just stay away from the scales and judge my weight by how my clothes fit etc.

I am definately more toned and "look" slimmer so Im happy enough. If you look better, thats the main thing!!

I ran the 5mile in Phoenix Park on Saturday as the step to running the half marathon, only started running earlier this year, and I was SO disappointed with my time. I've been training away and building up my time etc, etc & this girl who's a friend of mine decided she wanted to run these with me. No problems, right? unfortunately she's the type of girl who wants you there with her all the time, I'm more of a -put in the headphones and run on my own time-kind of person. But she put a whole lot of pressure on me to stick with her because she didn't 'want to be on her own' which I find a bit mad...in a race with hundreds of other people!!! She's now signed up for the 10miler & the half marathon so that we can do it together again, going to have to find a nice way to tell her that I want to run off my own bat. So, so upset after my time on saturday, but in a way I suppose it's giving me more motivation to train harder, but that's going to be pointless if I'm stuck running at someone else's pace:(
Sorry I know that's a random rant!! How many times a week do ye suggest running to be fully race fit come next month?

Don't worry about your time. From the sounds of your post, you are already capable of better.

I would suggest you jump into a slot in the Hal Higdon Half mile training.

Its the training I have been doing, the novice one, and I'm currently on week 6 after doing the 5miler in 52mins.

This training will bring me up to 8miles of training in time for the 10miler and will leave me with four weeks of training for the half.

Don't reckon I'll complete it to be honest, but I'm going to try my very best

Ooh that's a really good one, and a really achievable training programme as well-thanks a million for your help peanut head!! That's not too bad to try & stick to. What do you do for your cross training?

If you're that far ahead, I bet you'll be great come the half marathon:)
