I personally would definitely not skimp on photography.

Its probably the only thing you have to show for your money after the day is over!

Besides a spouse :pac:. Ask married couples how often they even look at wedding photo albums..

our professional photographer (in Germany) charged 200 Euro 'appearance fee', and then a set price per picture we wanted. So all in all, I think we pay around 600 Euros, max (haven't decided how many pics we want yet).

2000 for photographs is excessive, in my opinion. (but that's not the couple's fault, but the greedy photographers'.)

While I agree that a professional photographer is worth the money (you can see the difference, and would you really want to burden friends who should enjoy the wedding with the task of taking pictures? And what if they don't turn out nice (the pictures, not the friends)?), I don't agree with the exorbitant fees here.

I gave up on a proper budget spreadsheet a while ago, but our wedding came in under 10 k for roughly 100 people, including an open bar, champagne reception, big buffet, three-tier wedding cake, photographer, DJ, all the flowers, my dress and accessories, suit hire for groom and groomsmen, party until 5.30 am, and everything else.

I got married a few months ago and it cost me 26K for 120 people, thats including pulling in favours and freebies, but I found a one stop wedding shop in Kildare that sells everything from wedding dresses to cakes, car hire, photography, favours etc. i got my dress there and the owner Laura was so helpful, not one bit pushy and brutally honest. My sister went back to her for her wedding next year and they since have put together an inclusive package with some hotels for a wedding of 100 people for under 10k - its fab showroom and only one bride at a time too. The no. is 059 8634546

Given the stats all of the above marriages have a good chance of ending up in the family courts anyone who spends upwards of 20 to 30 k are in my book complete idiots or have plenty of dosh or a rich daddy

That's more than a bit harsh... just because you spend money on your wedding doesn't mean you have a good chance of ending up in the family courts!! Nor does it mean you are a complete idiot.. even the most straight forward mass followed by meal weddings can cost 20k very easily, especially if you come from a large extended family. Not everyone has a small family, not everyone wants a small wedding, and if you go beyond 100 people, unfortunately it's going to cost you. I've been saving with my OH for a while now and can afford to have a (hopefully!) great day and night out... but that's our choice. That doesn't mean
a: we're going to end up in family courts
b: we have plenty of dosh - we just saved religiously for it!
    c: we have rich daddy's
    or
    d: we're idiots!

ps: it's the OH who's mad for the big wedding day and not the bride in this case!

ok my apologies it was a bit harsh it just saddens me that good people like you and your partner who obiviously work hard and contribute to this economy have to go to such expence in this country just to get married i heard of a couple in north italy who got married he was an accountant she a solictor and there wedding cost 5k and by all accounts it was a good day out , theres just so much social pressure on couples these days , in this country anyway your obviously in love and thats a beautiful thing

I agree that good photography makes a big difference to the quality of the photos taken, but I object to the price they charge, esp for the album.

I did my own albums - a coffee table style laminated one, a 'traditional' one, a couple of smaller 'handbag' size ones and then a couple of softback 'magazines'. Bought the software for it and cos our photographer did a good job on the actual photos I was easily able to make some really impressive albums. Total amount for ALL the albums came to less than €200 inc the software. I compared mine to a friends and there was no difference between mine and hers (actually a few people commented that mine was nicer!). Hers cost €1500 just for ONE ALBUM. She paid €1000 for the photographer for 5 hours!

To be fair, its often not the married couples who look at the album, but usually family! mine have other poor sods bored silly showing them photos! my MIL has all the neighbours bored rigid taking it out everytime someone visits! lol
also, looking at my sisters album from almost 20 years ago, it is nice to have a record - many of the guests are sadly no longer with us, and it is nice to have photos of them in happy times. Granted we hadn't looked at the album in years, but it is nice to have it, knowing you can look at it whenever you want.

Personally I think there is no point whatsoever in getting a videographer.....everyone knows it will NEVER get watched and if you do you'll only find things wrong.

And in this day and age a DJ is no longer required....get your ipod......stick on all of your fave songs...put it on shuffle...plug in to speakers...hey presto...cheap music!!!

I really think people should make their own invites too....its not that hard....after all they only get looked at for about 5mins!!!:)

I would also have a 1 year rule for friends who are not married....if you are going out with someone for less than a year then your coming on your own!!!Some might say it's harsh but im not paying for someones fling to have dinner at my expense!

We've watched our wedding video loads, I think it's down to the individuals (both the couple and who you hire to be videographer giving you what you want) but it's a bit of a generalisation to state that a video only gets watched once and is put away. I love our video, there's very little talking, all our music and it has a "hilights" section that lasts about 10 minutes and shows the main parts of the day. Our friends with kids show their video to their children and have brought them out after a family member dies to see those walking and talking again when they are feeling low.

As for the DJ, you could go with the ipod option for sure. If your band has a dj service negotiate on the cost and see if it can be reduced somewhat.

I remember when I was younger I LOVED watching my parent's wedding video, and would even like to watch it now if I knew where it was (my ma hates it so its not about to tell me). Its a nice thing for your children to be able to watch when they are older, same with pictures I think. Wouldn't get a friend to do it though. I want them to enjoy the wedding, it'd put too much stress on them and I think I would be stressed in case the pictures didn't turn out the way I wanted.

You must be bad off if you have to pull out the wedding video for a nights entertainment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 427 ✭✭izzyflusky

Not that, but I thought it was nice being able to seefamily members when they were young. I didnt like the fact that I wasn't in it though (I was VERY young when I saw it last and I felt offended by it haha l:D)

...and what would you play the music through? The hotel Pa systems are suited for speaking but not playing music at a loud enough volume. To hire sound and lighting kit out is quite expensive and then you need someone to keep an eye on things as you don't want anything to go wrong on such a special day. Most djs won't be a whole lot more expensive to hire than the pa alone and the good ones will have backup equipment with them in case there is a problem.

I was at an ipod wedding in italy recently and as every second of every song was played there was little continuity on the night, like a good dj would provide when mixing the right songs together in the best order.

I suppose it's each to their own. If i've had a crap day I turn it on and watch the highlights to give me a little buzz. Also I travel a lot with work and I will watch my wedding video while abroad to see my beautiful husband. Helps with the loneliness. It's no blockbuster movie but it's one step better as I can relive that happiness over and over by playing the dvd.

Hi all, we're getting hitched in april 2012 and are hoping to do it in around €15000

    heres a break down
    Hotel €5880 (€35 a head with 150 guests)
    Band/DJ €1500
    Photographer €550
    Cake €300
Dresses, Accessories, Make up, Tan and shoes (me, 3x bridesmaid and a flower girl) €1800
    Suit hire x 4 adults, 1 child €500
    Groomsmen accessories €300
    Flowers/Decorations €300
    Invitations €550
    Rings €250
    Legal fees €300
    Wine €200
    Honeymoon €2000
    Church (inc music) €500

    Comes in at €14930

Im going to look at doing invitations but im about as arty as a snail and i really like the look of the invites i've found on weddingpaperdivas.com
Im really hoping to cut back in some areas aswel... Like ive found bridesmaids dresses on ebay that are made in ireland for €50 - 60 euro and they look fab, Also id be more then happy in a bargain find dress.
Im sourcing the flowers online and im coerscing my sis into helping!

Make it as managable as you can. Our rule was if it can be done on our budget we'd have our cousins if not we'd have a smaller wedding.

we're getting married in august 2012 and its not costing us alot although lucky for us we do have help from friends/family and we are not looking for some high key event we just want to enjoy our day with family and close friends...

Meal (€70 a head @ 50 people, but for this the following is covered,punch/tea/coffee & harpist on arrival, 2 choice 3 course meal, All wine served during the meal, sparkling wine for the toast, 1 bridal suite + 3 free rooms for parents and my grandparent/daughter. and sandwiches and cocktail sausages tea/coffee in the evening for about 100 people, and all the usual stuff is covered also) so €3500 covers pretty much the reception.

    Bar extension €450

Band/DJ €500 (maybe)one of my friends is a professional DJ and is sorting it out for us
Photographer (Family - my stepdad has one of those professional cameras and everyone has good digital ones)
Cake (A gift to us from a baker in my family)
Dresses (me, 3x bridesmaid and a flower girl) €1200 (me €400 bridesmaids 3x €200 and flowergirl (budgeting €200)
Hair (free my cousin is a hairdresser as is one of the bridesmaids)
Make up (I come from a family of girls so them doing my make up will be perfect, they have before)
Suit hire (Groomsmen x3) €300 (should be less my friend owns the suit shop)
Suit purchase (Groom €500 should be less my friend owns the suit shop)
Groomsmen accessories (All thrown in by shop with above anyways)
    Flowers/Decorations €100
Invitations (Free my mum is a Graphic Designer)
    Rings €250
    Church €500
Priest (free my OH's uncle is our priest)
    Cars for the day €380
Bus to and from reception €80

So thats €7760 and we are budgeting €1240 for unforseen costs so we don't end up stuck on the day, so €9000 in total. I know we have a lot of people chipping in but that to me will make it more special, and those who volunteered services have been told it will be their gift to us...:D

Had a look on Froogle.com you can buy sound and lighting kits from 140 euros to 1000+ and then when your finished you could sell it back on Ebay....its generally works out cheaper to buy things (doesn't have to be second hand)than hire...I also used this policy when building my house.:) Research is key!!

    Band: €500?

I think you'll be very hard pressed to get any band for €500 and if any band will do it for that, I'd be questioning how good they might be. The normal price for a decent band is anywhere between €1,300 and €2,500. A bad band can put a dampener on the wedding.

Aside from that, everyone looks near enough spot on. Great deal you got on the hotel. Your ribbons for cars will probably only come to a tener. You'd also want to check out the price for the cruise, that seems low I think. You may need to purchase return flights to Miami or somewhere to actually get on the cruise ship so allow for that. Also, you may spend quite a bit on honeymoon on food, drink, presents, etc. However, chances are you'll have a few quid in presents from the wedding so you'll be grand there.

Best of luck with the planning

Yeah thinking about it your right, I was a little bit hopeful with the band and yes they do set the whole athmosphere of the evening so it is important. Will definately look in the cruise prices alot more, I was going on some prices for this year 2010.
Just got a price for a photographer too - someone I work close with / a friend will do it for €1000. That includes two photographers all day, all the prints and an album. He usually charges €2500. So I think thats a good deal!

hi cowhands, i know of a photographer that charges €550 for 2 photographers and images on disc
also i know of a band for €1500 inc dj
pm me if you want details

we've managed to cut down our budget to just under 12k from €15500
so im delighted, took out a small cu loan for deposits and now we dont have to borrow anymore, thank god. loan will be finished by next november so plenty of time to add to our savings - we're currently oly €900 off budget but thats without factoring in the 5 months of additional savings we'll have built up from when we finish our loan to our wedding day. i am so happy i never touched our rainy day money over the last few years or it would have been a major struggle have our ideal with our funds

Buying a dress online can be great, but it can also turn into a false economy. I know equal amounts of people who have bought online and been delighted, but also equally as many people who have been really disappointed. However, you have plenty of time and you could find a bargain in an actual shop. Mine was €700 inc alterations. This was a dress reduced from €2000! It was a sample, but they had it cleaned and honestly, there was no way of knowing that it had been a sample - it was like brand new. also Oxfam bridal shop have great bargains. It might be worth considering???

also, on the accessories - in the price you give, do you include shoes? if so again be careful that you and the bridesmaids will be actually able to walk in them! the specific 'wedding' shoes can be crazy money, which I think is far too overpriced, but most decent shoes would cost at least €30-40 I would estimate...3 bridesmaids at this would be €120, already over your budget.
Also remember to include in your clothing budget underwear, if not for bridesmaids at least for yourself! When you get your dress depending on style you may not need special undies, but you should allow for this expense and then if you don't incurr it well and good.

is the cousin providing the cake iced? if so, happy days...if not then most cake decorators charge most of their price for the icing, not the actual cake. When I enquired about icing alone it was only around €50 when providing my own cake. You don't necessarily need a really fancy job of the icing - simple can look amazing. Mine was white with just little iced dots of gold and a gold ribbon, then we decorated it in fresh flowers the same as the bouquets. It looked great.
    cowhands wrote: »
Flowers: €200 - using silk flowers
have you already priced these? decent silk/artificial flowers can cost as much as fresh. A lot of florists are doing packages, so don't rule a florist out. Likewise if you go for fresh flowers and choose simple styles for the bouquets then someone who has a knack for it could do a good job on them. A simple hand tied, of all the one type of flower is fairly easy to do with a bit of practice.

I know this because I had a wedding here and one abroad - for the one abroad I really wanted a replica of the bouquet I had here, and not knowing a good florist over there I got a silk one done here and brought it with me. It looked great, but TBH it wasn't much cheaper than my fresh one. Plus my friend who is a florist said it actually took more work because he had to cut the plastic off a lot of the stems so he could assemble the bouquet and it was very fiddly.

also, silk flowers have thicker plastic stems and can be more difficult to work with - particularly for small items like botton holes and corsages.

have you included your registry fees (€150) and also your church/venue charges? Some churches can cost up to €500.

Also, music for the service - will you get someone to do this? if so that might be another charge (or you can burn your own CD or arrange an iPod and save money here).

just some of my thoughts.... :)

Ours is looking to be about €13k for 100 ppl (everything except the Honeymoon) am hoping the Trailfinders Wedding list will help with that :D

It is suprising how the cost can creep up.

Before getting engaged or even thinking about marriage I always thought that I would set a small budget and there was no way I would go over it! And didn't know how people couldnt stick to theirs...

Well, now that I am engaged and planning the wedding I feel totally different about it, it's so easy to get carried away. At the moment right now we have the hotel booked and I've got my dress and a few bit and bobs but I have no idea of how much eveything is gonna cost in the end. Tbh its driving me mad!

    I keep hearing that I shouldn't worry, but I can't help it!!

Sorry bout the rant but I had to let it out :o

Also, music for the service - will you get someone to do this? if so that might be another charge (or you can burn your own CD or arrange an iPod and save money here).

just some of my thoughts.... :)

Thank you so much for your comments and suggestions, I really appreciate them all. I was half thinking long the same lines with my dress, what if I ordered on line and was totally disppointed? That would be a disaster and money down the drain. But I cant justify spending over €400 for a dress, I just couldnt do it for a dress Im going to wear for a few hours and put in the wardrobe for the rest of my life. We have a small baby and mortgage to pay too and I just couldnt allow myself to go over €400. Where do people find all these great bargains? Where should I be looking?

My friend is getting married in Oct and she has bought the bridesmaids shoes already so we are going to use them again.Never thought of underwear thanks!

Yep my cousin is icing my cake too and will not accept any payment for the ingredients at all, she wants to do it as a present to us to I will get her a voucher or summit anyway.

Likewise with the flowers I was planning on buying on line and cutting the costs, again being honest i really couldnt be bothered with spending hundreds of euro on fresh flowers that are going to die anyway. Theres seems to be some good variety out there and I aint going to be carrying the flowers around all day so the silk ones will do just fine, I priced them from different websites and Im nearly sure I can do them all for under €200 including delivery.

Good thinking about the service music, we have a muscian friend who we are hoping to ask to sing at the church, Im sure he will so again we will give him a voucher etc.
Meeting with the priest later this evening to confirm dates etc and I was talking with my neighbour last night who got married in the same church by the same priest and she was saying that the fees are as follows:
    Marriage coarse €180
    Licence €10
    Donation €150
So I better factor that in somewhere too!

I knew I would forget summit or other!

don't foget your €150 legal fees which you will have to pay regardless of church or civil wedding!

Hope it all goes well for you.

Some of the nicest presents are when people pitch in and do things to help on your big day. Every time you look at your photos you will remember oh so and so did our cake, and such and such our photography etc etc - it makes it very personal (and you realise how much people care for you when they are prepared to put themselves out for you so you can have a nice day :))
