An article from today's Sunday Independent highlighting a problem with " welfare tourism"

Racism isnt telling it as it is.They had no problem complaining about Irish abroad who do it and here.But to say non national does it whole different kettle of fish.

Which begs the question why do the government need a volcano eruption in Iceland to alert them to possible fraud in their own system?

Erm, that article doesnt really say much. It goes on at the end to say that many absentees is sort of normal. Its a slight increase during the ash cloud but not huge.
That article is sort of a waste of space.

Im not suggesting "welfare tourism" is not existent but I would estimate that only a small minority of the 3,515 out of the 151,060 supposed to sign on. Even if 1,000 of the 3,515 were welfar tourists (which is far to hig!h an etimate) thats still far less that 1% of the total number on the dole

How do you know the problem stops at 3515?

For those that are saying it don't go on to that degree, it does.
A family member works with a section of the immigrant community in a local area.
While the majority are law abiding, they have told him that its is a quite common racket others pull and those that are staying within the law, are ashamed of their fellow nationals doing it.

Doesn't mean it needs to be ignored though, or swept under a rug to maintain some needless social nicety. Lots of issues are dwarfed by the current situation here, should they all be overlooked too?

It used to be every week,the day before collecting it wasnt it?
And the new ones had to collect in post office and not allowed to be wired to bank accounts.

I knew some who used to have to sign on twice a week cos' they were under suspicion of also trying to rip the state off.
They were - but in a lot of cases they still got away with it.
They used to just pile into their cars for an hour, use it also as their lunch break but taken in the afternoon - and go down and sign.
Used to get me mad no end.

Having been on welfare for the guts of a year I really don't buy the 'welfare tourism' idea. First of all even if someone did want to do it, the hassle of setting it up, the interviews, forms, inspections etc the fact that you have to have a fixed address, the cost of flights. It wouldn't even be worth it. Also how do they pick up their dole every week since it has to be done in person? If it is being done it's a very very small number of people, not even enough to make it a real issue.
