Today is the 4th of July - American Indpendance Day

The American commemoration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Which beggars the question, how come Ireland doesn't have a similar day of commemoration of our day of independance?

Do you think we should have one?

Thank you! The reason I'm up this hour is because I'm just in from my birthday party. The big 21!

Most definitely we should be proud to celebrate our independence. Too long has there been a stupid stigmatization attached to Irish people celebrating their heritage by being called "leftists" or "Shinners". We have much to be proud of - let us celebrate it

Whats the date then OP? The start of the war, the truce or the evacuation of the invading forces? I reckon it should be 21st of January, others would like a date in July (better weather).

The Irish government picked Easter Sunday. You may have noticed a very large military parade a few years ago, but usually it's a smaller thing involving a reading of the Proclamation.

Honestly I think it's a day that the whole world should celebrate.

How many of us here took our freedom for granted? How many of us took the basic right of being able to walk down the street of our own accord, for granted.

Will smith, Bill Pullman and co. deserve this day for saving us from alien tormenters. Sure, we lost many in that horrible summer of 97 but lest we
forget what we gained that year - OUR FREEDOM!

Thats probably because Shinners have hijacked a lot of that heritage for their own means. Would be nice for it to be taken back like the Rising celebrations were.

Ireland needs a new public holiday. Not a ****ty day off work thing, but a proper festival/party type thing. Base it on our independance and it'll just become a platform for politicians, who will manage to suck the life out of it and turn it into an anti-climax.......people will almost be wishing they could go back to work

If we're going to base it on something we need to make sure the "theme" doesn't get in the way of the partying, so we'll have to choose carefully. For the date, I suggest June 21st, as 1. the summer is lacking in a proper public holiday, 2. the weather in june is probably as good as you'll get and 3. it's the longest day of the year, so it's a special date, but yet it's non-political and non-religious so everyone can join in

I did so much running around and talking to people, I couldn't keep a drink with me the whole time.
