Today is the 4th of July - American Indpendance Day

The American commemoration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Which beggars the question, how come Ireland doesn't have a similar day of commemoration of our day of independance?

Do you think we should have one?

Happy Birthday.. don't spend it all on Boards!

Thank you! The reason I'm up this hour is because I'm just in from my birthday party. The big 21! :D

Back out tomorrow for dinner, the Leinster Hurling Final and a pub crawl.

On topic: Our day would be in January wouldn't it?

And if the U.S owes its independence from Irish!.

We know that 9 of the 56 signers of the famous declaration were Irish .

Between 1/3 and 1/2 of General Washington army were Irish.

George Washington said, ``When our friendless standard was first unfurled for resistance, who were the strangers who first mustered around our staff? And when it reeled in fight, who more bravely sustained it than Erin's generous sons?''

Sir Henry Clinton wrote home to London that, ``the emigrants from Ireland are our most serious opponents.''

Most definitely we should be proud to celebrate our independence. Too long has there been a stupid stigmatization attached to Irish people celebrating their heritage by being called "leftists" or "Shinners". We have much to be proud of - let us celebrate it

We can't have an independence day until the whole island is independent surely.

How come there was no After Hours celebratory-turned-venemously-political (well, it isn't, but it will be) thread for Canada Day? :(

Whats the date then OP? The start of the war, the truce or the evacuation of the invading forces? I reckon it should be 21st of January, others would like a date in July (better weather).

The Irish government picked Easter Sunday. You may have noticed a very large military parade a few years ago, but usually it's a smaller thing involving a reading of the Proclamation.

there are far too many self hating postcolonial Irish types in the media (and outside of it) for this to be discussed rationally.

Why should we celebrate Independence Day? We're not part of America

Why not just celebrate everything Bastille Day and the independence day in every other country too.

6th December, 1921 Was the day the Anglo Irish treaty was Signed, so surely that date should be celibrated?

Honestly I think it's a day that the whole world should celebrate.

How many of us here took our freedom for granted? How many of us took the basic right of being able to walk down the street of our own accord, for granted.

Will smith, Bill Pullman and co. deserve this day for saving us from alien tormenters. Sure, we lost many in that horrible summer of 97 but lest we
forget what we gained that year - OUR FREEDOM!

    Happy Independence day everyone!

Thats probably because Shinners have hijacked a lot of that heritage for their own means. Would be nice for it to be taken back like the Rising celebrations were.

Ireland needs a new public holiday. Not a ****ty day off work thing, but a proper festival/party type thing. Base it on our independance and it'll just become a platform for politicians, who will manage to suck the life out of it and turn it into an anti-climax.......people will almost be wishing they could go back to work :D.

If we're going to base it on something we need to make sure the "theme" doesn't get in the way of the partying, so we'll have to choose carefully. For the date, I suggest June 21st, as 1. the summer is lacking in a proper public holiday, 2. the weather in june is probably as good as you'll get and 3. it's the longest day of the year, so it's a special date, but yet it's non-political and non-religious so everyone can join in :)!

I suggest the day would start off like this; Activities/general partying in city/town centers during the day (a bit like paddy's day, but better weather) and then at night massive beach parties untill the sun comes up :).

And Irish flags. With the harp only.I don't see anyone celebrating with the tri colour in their parades barr Americans.

    But not going to happen.

I did so much running around and talking to people, I couldn't keep a drink with me the whole time.
I have tonight to go yet though...still hope for humanity!

/ends off topic discussion. Who wants to get banned from Boards on their burfday like?!

6th of December would be handy for Christmas shopping alright. 21st January would be good for a day for shopping in the January Sales.

I live in the North, so I personally wouldn't benefit from it. However, I wouldn't begrudge my nieghbours in the Republic an extra holiday, so I voted in favour of it. :)

In all seriousness, though. Given the fact that the people here went through hell and high water to achieve thier independance from GB, I find it shocking that nothing is done to commemorate the event.

Being English myself, do I fall under that category? I don't hate myself, or take any kind of personal responsibility for what happened in the bad old days of Empire. But I won't sweep it under the carpet and pretend it didn't happen either. I fail to see how post 18 refers to me, or what I said.

He wasn't referring to you, think of the likes of; Kevin Myers, John Waters, Bob Geldof, Conor Cruise O'Brien etc... It's these kinds of people that put out this idea that if you're republican or nationalist in anyway, you are a Shinner, backward, sectarian etc...

You don't fall under that category. No offence was intended, I can assure you.

I meant the people that El Siglo mentioned - the type of Irish person who yearns to be part of an empire that was in decline 150 years ago (following the disbanding of the East India Company) but tell the rest of us, who aren't the least bit republican or nationalist, ad infinitum, to "get with the times". The type who nearly make me want to emigrate, ironically.

Should we celebrate Independence Day on Easter Monday when the Easter Uprising took place? When was the date when the last British troops left Dublin? And if Ireland gets its own Independence Day, what are the chances that it'll become just another excuse to go out and get blind drunk?
