    Always display my number.

    No, I don't answer them.
If someone come up to your door knocking but wearing a mask hiding their face, would you answer it?

Anyway, frankly I consider it rude.
If they have any manners they will say who it is - not have you play constant guessing games.

Do you consider letters without the sender written on the envelope rude, too?

I never answer private numbers. It is the farmer's code.

No but then again, they don't ring me at all hours of the night and make any non-stop noise demanding an answer!

Also, the bank and the Garda use private numbers....

I use a Global Roaming sim (meaning I don't have to pay roaming costs for calls or texts). Sometimes my number comes up, oft-times it doesn't.

When I call one of the private number-haters I inevitably have to send them a text asking them to pick up the phone so I can speak to them. Grrrr!

I grew up before these new-fangled caller I.D. thingies came out. Nobody knew who was calling who. It wasn't a big deal then.
    Why is it now?

If a cold caller rings me, which is very rarely, it takes me about 5 seconds to tell them I'm not interested in whatever it is they're selling.

And in the small hours of the night when you get that annoying phone call, which is totally rude I agree, the fact whether the number is displayed or not makes all the difference:confused:

    .

Fair enough, there are a few exceptions but my point is that I feel that if someone has deliberately concealed their number they are trying to catch me on the hop. I simply let them leave a voice mail message and I will get back to them when I want.

Yeah. You will know who to punish.

And in the case of the blanked number you will have to take the call in order to find out

Which of course would leave you totally vulnerable to them. Whats the hop btw? That like the jax?

Wha? Wasn't aware that I was? Was just thanking people who's points I agreed with.. think I only thanked like 2-3 posts in the whole thread?

    But okay..

Yes, if its displayed I know its a person known to me and it must be serious.
The other might be serious too but unknown to me so if it's equally important, they will leave a message for me to check without undue pressure and/or salesmanship to answer to.

Long story short, all those that know me display their number - and they know how I deal with answering calls.
Anyone else, they will be kept waiting or they should leave a message.

I hate private numbers, usually because it's O2 or someone doing surveys, so I avoid. The problem with someone blocking their number is that it normally involves a positive action on their part to change the settings on their phone to render their numbers private, and frankly I don't trust that. Are you that annoying that you need to block your number?
It's all good anyway, because no one rings me :(

lots of hospital switchboards come up as private numbers

so the call could be from A&E to tell you a relative or friend is seriously ill

If it's an emergency I always assume they'd ring multiple times in a row. If a private number tries just once and hangs up then I tend to ignore it, but if they try two or three times in quick succession then I'd pick it up because I'd figure it's an emergency.

Would a hospital not ring more than once, or leave a message?

    Agree.

I have had Crumlins hospital leave me a message many a time for example.
I have no problem with that so it works out fine.

They can leave a message or better still upgrade their $h1tty switchboard.

Im actually in the market for an answering machine right now but not just any answering machine

I want to be able to adjust the number of rings before cutting to voicemail with seperate settings for Witheld, Unknwn (i.e. not on speeddial) and known numbers

im sure a hospital would, in the event of an emergency

but i'd imagine some people might think they were just a persistent cold caller

That'd be amusing if I'd actually made a mistake, but within context the sentence makes sense.

I had to read it about 4 times before realising what you meant :o

I've never encountered a cold caller who'd ring more than once within the span of a few minutes to half an hour. If they do call multiple times, it'll be over the period of a full day or multiple days.

If I do get caught out by one, then so be it, but it's a rare enough occurrence to be justified imo.

I don't answer private or withheld numbers. I have a stalker at the moment who keeps calling me, several hundred times a month, and the Gardai advised me not to answer their calls as it escalates the problem. I have a voicemail set up, so if i don't answer, the caller can leave a message for me, and i'll call back.

Hate private numbers. I have to answer them because I get a fair few calls from skype, which defaults to private number.

That, and 08333333333333...333.....3333333...etc. "Hello sir how you are today you would like to upgrading your telephone to one of our new latest models?" :(

Had that from Vodaphone UK, and as it was a company phone told them to ring the office number

Reply we don't know that number sir

    Referred them to directory enquires

after 6 months they still haven't called me on the office number

Do not answer them. Don't see why somebody has to hide their number. If one on the lads is going ringing me off a blocked work number they give me a text beforehand to let me know its them. They are of the same opinion as myself.

When I lived with my parents our phone had no caller ID.

My landline in my own house has no caller ID.

If I don't want to talk to the caller, I hang up.

People who make a big deal about private numbers are paranoid.

Our business lines will often not display a number when dialling out. I don't know why but it's not something sinister.
