    If Text Speak is frowned upon in Boards posts, then why do we see so many acronyms, e.g. lol, afaik, tbh, etc.? How many are there, and how many are accepted? Very interested to know.

    text speak is not the same as acronyms. "tbh" is "to be honest" but in text speak it would be some shoite like, "2 b onest"

    internet short hand is used more so for commonly used groupings of word.

    We're on the internet so internet acronyms are acceptable as they've been around since before mobile phones became common, we are not texting each other so SMS txt speak is not acceptable

    If you want to use txt speak then send a SMS to your friend

    Even then, these days using txt speak in texts is pretty unnecessary and pointless.

    Actually, they are all acronyms.

    lol = laugh out loud
    afaik = as far as I know
    tbh = to be honest

    On the subject of internet abbreviations and acronyms, what do people pronounce "lol" as? I find myself saying "lol" and "L-O-L" depending on context. I feel that I have no guidance in my daily life to help with such problems.

    "LOL" stands for "laughing out loud" = abbreviation.
    The fact that people pronounce it as a word (lol) makes it an acronym.

    They're the facts. I'm not saying "lol" should be a recognised word in the dictionary, but the fact that people SAY the word "lol" makes it an acronym by definition. SIPTU & NATO aren't actual "words" either - but they each form a pronounceable word, and are therefore acronyms.

    I'm sorry if i didn't phrase my post a little clearer or be a little more precise with the question. I was only trying to find out if it was O.K. for anyone to concoct their own acronysm or initialism. My father used to have a saying "Does your mother know your out?" meaning that you might be a little out of your depth. So would dymkyo be offensive in a post? AH in a Boards context I know what it means but outside Boards usage it has a totally different meaning to me anyway. That's the point I was trying to get accross.
