If Text Speak is frowned upon in Boards posts, then why do we see so many acronyms, e.g. lol, afaik, tbh, etc.? How many are there, and how many are accepted? Very interested to know.

text speak is not the same as acronyms. "tbh" is "to be honest" but in text speak it would be some shoite like, "2 b onest"

internet short hand Vs phone short hand

text speak is tiresome and childish.

internet short hand is used more so for commonly used groupings of word.

We're on the internet so internet acronyms are acceptable as they've been around since before mobile phones became common, we are not texting each other so SMS txt speak is not acceptable

If you want to use txt speak then send a SMS to your friend

Even then, these days using txt speak in texts is pretty unnecessary and pointless.

If you're so against incorrect use of the English language, you should learn what an acronym is - "lol" is the only acronym in your list.

    Actually, they are all acronyms.

    lol = laugh out loud
afaik = as far as I know
    tbh = to be honest

So, if you're going to criticize, make sure you don't do what you just done and set yourself up to look foolish in the eyes of others. :pac:

    FAIL isn't an acronym.

    Like you've just done?

An acronym needs to spell another word - a lot of people get confused with this.

Siptu, Scuba, Nato, lol = acronyms.

afaik, tbh, brb, BBC, RTÉ = initialisms.

They're both types of abbreviations, but acronyms need to actually make another word.

Google it if you don't believe me. And you should probably do that next time before trying to correct someone.

Saw that - who are you referring to failing though - me or Karl? I assume him, since it's him that failed when he tried to "correct" me using his duff information.

acronyms need to actually make another word.

While this is generally the case, it is not universally accepted. From wiki:
    wikipedia wrote:
Although the term acronym is widely used to describe any abbreviation formed from initial letters, most dictionaries define acronym to mean "a word" in its original sense, while some include a secondary indication of usage, attributing to acronym the same meaning as that of initialism

On the subject of internet abbreviations and acronyms, what do people pronounce "lol" as? I find myself saying "lol" and "L-O-L" depending on context. I feel that I have no guidance in my daily life to help with such problems.

    +1
    and + another 1

It's almost as annoying as when someone types "I seen X yesterday"
or "That is my argument. End of."

I guess you completely missed the entire point. Let me break it down as simple as possible for you:

"LOL" stands for "laughing out loud" = abbreviation.
The fact that people pronounce it as a word (lol) makes it an acronym.

They're the facts. I'm not saying "lol" should be a recognised word in the dictionary, but the fact that people SAY the word "lol" makes it an acronym by definition. SIPTU & NATO aren't actual "words" either - but they each form a pronounceable word, and are therefore acronyms.

"afaik" stands for "as far as I know" - but people type that abbreviation - they don't say it as a word (or if they did, it'd sound pretty retarded).

You done with the irrelevant point-missing posts?

I'm sorry if i didn't phrase my post a little clearer or be a little more precise with the question. I was only trying to find out if it was O.K. for anyone to concoct their own acronysm or initialism. My father used to have a saying "Does your mother know your out?" meaning that you might be a little out of your depth. So would dymkyo be offensive in a post? AH in a Boards context I know what it means but outside Boards usage it has a totally different meaning to me anyway. That's the point I was trying to get accross.

No, not the same thing. If an acronym is in common usage and the majority of people know what it means then it's much more acceptable than you just deciding to make up your own.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,289 ✭✭✭parker kent

Mildly off topic but it really irritates me when people add tbh or tbf at the end of their posts. So if you didn't type that, would you not have been honest?! Also JMO is used by way too many people. I know it is your opinion, you have just typed it!

Who pronounces lol as a word like lollipop instead of each letter as in L.O.L?

Well who concocted the first acronysm or initialism? Was he or she a spy or secret agent? Was it a code or was everyone supposed to know what it meant?

Most of the people who used to use txt spk now use predictive text on their phones, i've found.
