I would post here more, but there's not too many topics that interest me really. I'd post in more threads but it's fairly pointless as a lot of good advice just gets lost in the dross.

Also I'm too busy trying to form a hair metal band.

I had an interesting insight into this the other night, I was talking to a girl who has started weightlifting, and she said she'd love to start a log but she was worried about what comments she'd get in here as she's only starting out. She basically thought that the forum was strictly for people who already knew what they were at, and not a welcoming place for newbies. It kind of disappointed me 'cause I'd love to see more girls start up fitness logs!

I can see how the newbie threads can be frustrating when it's the same info being asked again and again, but at the same time I think some people can get on their high horse a bit about it, instead of thinking about when they were starting out and how confusing all the conflicting info can be.

Regardless though, it's still a great forum :)

first off, it's still a great forum...but there is a LOT of the same threads started by n00bs. Which is fine everyone has to start somewhere I know but if they did a quick search they could get most of the info in the stickies or any number of "Help i'm a newbie" threads.

There's lots of good info on here from lot of very smart, learned and dedicated people but sometimes, as Hanley said you'll get blasted for posting something that someone else disagrees with...the beef v chicken debacle from the other day springs to mind...but hey that's the internet for ya!

I'll keep posting when I think i can help or make fun of something anyway...

[edit] yeah, cause i'm totally in the same league as the guys you mentioned ragg!! :p[/edit]

I know this idea has been bandied about and dismissed numerous times, but is it time for the fitness forum to implement some sort of system where people who have fairly in depth knowledge of a particular area relative to this forum could be distinguished from other "less informed" posters?

Think of all the knowledge here. As ragg pointed out, a lot of the technical posters don't hang around and don't have that much input anymore, which is a shame. Even Hanley is saying that he doesn't bother post outside his log, which is such a pity considering how many people probably came to this forum and actually got to interact with an actual powerlifter, something that most people wouldn't have the benefit of outside of teh internetz.

Such a system wouldn't be perfect, as barry pointed out a while ago that he'd argue of academic matters with the likes of Transform etc, and I'd probably forsee some conflicts between different commercial interests.

The tl;dr of this is that there is a lot of ****e being spouted on this board. Experienced, knowledgable posters are put off by this and don't bother post anymore. We could try avoid this by creating some sort of system that allows viewers to distinguish which poster is likely to give credible advice from a poster who's credentials are -as of yet - unproven.

No its the same on every forum, the only possible way of improving it is good moderation (which we have), users reporting dumb posts and generally trying to foster a policy of engaging one's brain. Even then I don't think quality issues can be improved that much.

No its the same on every forum
I think most internet forums could benefit from a "how to search" sticky, and explaining the importance of searching. People might spend 10minutes typing out a decent in-depth reply and then 2 days later somebody asks the same thing, they might get a blunt reply while if they searched they would have found the other thread. Topics have already been done very well. The google site:boards.ie function works very well. On one forum I go to newbies were not allowed post for a week, since 99% of questions were already answered very well. There was talk of newbies having to pass a simple quiz on the subject, not as suited here though. There was also "classic threads" stickies under subheadings.

If people are too lazy to search for 2mins then why should others spend their time replying. In the nutrition & diet forum there is an ongoing thread of "how many weightwatchers points are in", I have told people numerous times how to do this, e.g. search the manufacturers site or mysupermarket.co.uk for info and then put values into a calculator, but the very next post could be "how many points in weetabix", expecting others to do the donkey work.

Good point. To expand on what I said above I think a lot of problems arise from people not wanting to put in the work required to make the changes they want, and asking questions where they put up what they are willing to do, hoping that for some reason they are the unique person who can lose weight while eating 3 snickers a day. I agree that highlighting the search function would cut back on some of those threads that you mention but I also think a lot of it is people looking to reassure themselves even if its misguided. I've noticed this in the nutrition forum a lot as well and its for the same reasons.

My tip for good form when doing Squats is to not wear runners i.e. barefoot. Mine tend to tilt my weight onto my toes

Quite happy to see the amount of people joining me on the WUSS wagon today. Although I skipped training due to pure exhaustion. Lack of sleep the last 2 nights and being in work at 6 am just kinda killed it so I passed out on the sofa after work.

Thanks for making me feel a little bit better my fellow whimps :D
