Vietnam was one of the most disgusting wars of the 20th century. To give you an example of how bad it must have been, my uncle was sitting beside me at my aunty's wedding, 2 people from the groom's side of the family were sitting at our table, both ex-soliders of Iraq. They started talking about Iraq, one brought up Vietnam. As soon as my uncle heard Vietnam war he broke down into tears, had some form of mini-flashback or something as they were talking about it.

Don't know why anyone would ever have wanted to been there, some seriously sickening **** happened.

I do. I was born in the wrong decade.
This is such a ridiculous idea for a thread. Do you mean that you want to visit the country, or do you mean that you wish you were over there during the time of the American (that's what the Vietnamese call it) War during the late 60s/early 70's? On which side did you want to be?

Vietnam is about so much more than the war. It is a beautiful country. I was lucky enough to visit there about 3 years ago. The history and culture is fascinating. There were plenty of war museums, very harrowing. There is a really good Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi, and Halong Bay is beautiful. I recommend trying the North, preferably travel the whole country if you can.

Both sides suffered during the war, you'd really have to wonder at the point of it all.

So until the OP becomes better informed, I would recommend that this thread be closed.

Thanks for that. I don't normally think of myself as "bad" but maybe this stupid thread has changed my personality.

Keep travelling, it's good for you, broadens your mind don't you know!

One of the sickest things the Americans done (apart from the land mines) was put bombs into kids toys :(

Get yourself a copy of Battlefield Vietnam:

You can play Ride of the Valkyries in your helicopter as you fly in to destroy a village while stoned off your tits.

    Billy came back from Vietnam
Just a shadow of a man
He was a shadow of a man
When he came back from Vietnam
    Billy came back from Vietnam
Just a shadow of a man
He was a shadow of a man
When he came back from Vietnam
He was spraying that Agent Orange
On the foliage of the land
    Out of 80-gallon cans
    Way back in Vietnam
    Billy came back from Vietnam
Just a shadow of a man
He was a shadow of a man
When he came back from Vietnam

He married him up a woman that he
    Like to call Diane
Though her true name was Mai-Pan
She changed her name to Mrs. Graham
    After two stillborn babies
Billy said I am just a portion of the man
I was before I went to Nam
Now he drinks and snorts amphetamine
Just as often as he can
    He's a shadow of a man
    Spent his time in Vietnam

    Billy came back from Vietnam
Just a shadow of a man
He was a shadow of a man
When he came back from Vietnam

Napalm in itself was sickening. A great way of clearing areas for helicopter landings and the like, but using it against people I think is pretty sickening.

After his recent outburst there, me thinks "me_right_one" will be taking a week to 2 week holiday from AH.

It'll be worth it. Some people just have to be told. Fools.

Forget Vietnam, Afghanistan is where it's at these days - all those dumb Brits and Yanks getting killed for their masters in Whitehall or Washington - have they learned nothing from that place's history?

I agree with me_right_one, Jeez what does it take for people to just answer the question. Interesting question OP, I personally dont think I would've liked to be there, but I can see the appeal, especially for anyone involved in the military. Horrible and unethical as it was, the Vietnam war served a vital purpose in stopping the spread of communism in the midst of the cold war. Eventhough the USA lost, it did show the world the might of the American war machine, letting any mad countries know not to rock the boat of the sane, western world. You have to remember this only started 14 years after end of WW2, and when Russia was invading countries left, right, and centre. Dictators invading other countries and destablising the world was a reality, and now nukes were available. The good guys had to get on top first, and stay there. We could have had WW3 but for Vietnam.
