Didn't know eurovision was even on
Same here till a few days ago.
Then it was when I saw it in the tv listings "O' look, its back! ...whats in the cinema that night?"

    This thread is not official.

    Thanks for clearing that up!

I'd vote for Greece just to see them try and host the Eurovision on zero budget...should be interesting.

Apart from that - it's all just a bit of fun, and a good excuse for a couple of drinks (Key change! Wind machine! Mustachioed ladies!)

    :D

Ireland will make it as judges are responsible for half the votes and they won't allow a former winner to exit stage left.......or right :p

The Eurovision should just die now. It serves no purpose anymore.

I'm all for Ireland getting through, but that song bored me to death! :(

Nice effort in fairness but the singer is a bit, eh I dunno, "pleasantly plump":o

Iceland got through on Tuesday and they sent the volcano with smoke still coming off her.

The semi final, so called, is tonight. The UK, France and Spain don't have to take part - they are automatically into the final because of the money they put into it. The pauper nations have to "qualify" - also in the semi finals only certain countries can vote for other countries AFAIK.

    Final is on Saturday?

Huh the paupers have to qualify? Is this a new rule? For the past few years it's been the countries with the least amount of votes in the final got dumped into the semi finals the following year. Has this changed? Is everyone in the semi finals now (apart from the paying/winning countries)?

Yes, I'm going to google in the meantime before anyone jumps at me :D

No-one will vote for Greece as they have got enough off of us already.

    lmfao :D:D:D:D:D:D

Well, I have the tremendous bet of €1 not to qualify. It's a crappy song, not sung powerfully enough (but that's the fault of the song). First verse starts a bit abruptly too.

As usual putting Linda Martin being on the panel means we will do shíte I'd say - maybe if Niamh being a previous winner and not doing well has any consequences, it'll be that RTÉ will finally take Linda out the back and shoot her off the panel. Look at youtube theres a pile of really decent entries that never even got to the final on the Late Late, including 1 crowd who've entered every year since about 2001 with what I think are better songs.

We better not win it !

It'll break the country if we do.
Fortunately, there are some things that should ensure that we don't:

    firstly, the song is ****e.
secondly, we appear to have chosen a fat bird to represent us in a competition that has wall to wall stunners.
    Finally, the song is ****e.

I reckon Germany are out as well - they will make sure they lose so they won't have to stup up for hosting next year.

Germany's entry is actually pretty good this year (by Eurovision standards). They did a You're A Star type talent show to find their entry. Their singer Lena is one sassy lassie and likes a bit of skinny dipping as well (she did some TV show I think where her character and another guy jump into a pool sans clothing). Azerbijan are the favourites and Germany are right there in second with the bookies. Word is that Azerbijan weren't that great in the dress rehearsal so Germany could be the new favourites after tonight.

We are a sure bet to win. How can any other result be possible what with us sending a walrus wrapped in clingfilm to drone out a dirge to delight and entertain our European brothers and sisters.

Bookies have us as 6th favourite to qualify tonight. :)

Kiss of death. She won't qualify. Too much bloc voting especially tonight, with the likes of Armenia,Turkey, Azerbaijan,Ukraine divvying up the ole million votes, we'll struggle. It's no coincidence that Irelands Eurovision decline began with televoting - even allowing for the fact it is supposed to be 50-50 Jury/Televote now....

    Cruel, but quite funny.

Anyway, best of luck to Ireland. Eurovisions still a good laugh, regardless of the block voting, imo.

The constant stream of RTE presenters telling us how wonderful our entry is makes me hope that we get zero votes. They clearly were all pushing for Niamh Kavanagh before she even had won the Irish contest. The stink of cronyism surrounding her entry is foul. The reality is that the competition is all about style over substance. On that front Niamh falls on her fat arse. Cruel but true.

Her accent is the WORST! There's a version of the Cure's 'Love Cats' sung by her out on Youtube - awful, awful, awful! I wish all singers would have to sing in their mother-tongue, or at least in the main language of the country they are representing.
That Russian song, for example, would have been much nicer in Russian...

The Eurovision is just pants now, Ireland has to qualify now? Semi-finals? How did we do in the group Stages?

We have to qualify to be on the stage as some Eastern-European transvestites in spandex…ridiculous.

    Bring back the good ol’days:

I've just heard our "song" now for the first time...another load of slushy ballad bollix. When are we ever going to learn that the only way to win eurovision now is to practically send a live sex show with the backing music of Christy Moore to do the business?

there are so many countries wanting to be part of the thing these days that qualifying is the only way to make sure everyone has a chance, anyway the eurovision has been won by a country HAVING to qualify 5 of the last 6 years. 2005 is the last time an entry has won without having to go through the semi-final first

ireland should be thankful the committee didn't ban the country for 10 years after sending over dustin the turkey
